48-year-old cameraman Patrick McDermott was the one-and-off boyfriend of Olivia Newton John. In 2005, he boarded an overnight fishing charter off the coast of Los Angeles. When the boat disembarked the following day, Patrick was nowhere to be seen.
Coast Guard Investigators found no sign of accident, suicide or foul play. They concluded that Patrick had most likely been lost at sea. But the following year, reported sightings of Patrick started coming in from Mexico. The question arose - what if Patrick McDermott had faked his own death?
In season two of Pseudocide, Poppy Damon and Alice Fiennes dig deeper into Patrick McDermott’s case than anyone has before. They explore Patrick’s life, his disappearance, and the media storm that followed. With exclusive interviews from Patrick’s friends, private investigators, marine safety experts, and a witness from that fateful boat trip, Poppy and Alice strive to answer the question: Did Patrick die at sea? Or did he disappear deliberately to begin a new life?
‘The Disappearance of Patrick McDermott’ is both a true-crime quest for answers, and a deep dive into media ethics and journalism in the digital age.
The first two episodes of Pseudocide season two will be released for free exclusively on Spotify, on Wednesday November 9th. The following four episodes will drop weekly after that.
