On October 24 1953, 15-year-old Evelyn Hartley set out for a babysitting job in her neighbourhood of La Crosse, Wisconsin. When she didn’t call her parents at 8.30pm as promised, Evelyn’s father raced to the house to check on her. Although the baby she was caring for was fast asleep in her crib, there was blood at the scene and no trace of Evelyn. This was the beginning of one of Wisconsin’s most infamous cases, and it would change an entire community forever.
