Case 218: The Blackout Killers (Part 2/2)

The S-Bahn commuter train rattled along in the darkness towards the eastern side of Berlin. Slowly, the cityscape gave way to the sprawling suburbia of Friedrichsfelde. It was here, in the early hours of August 13 1939, that Lina Budzinski disembarked. Walking alone, she headed towards the nearby allotment garden.

I just wanted to say that fans of Casefile know without a doubt that it is the best true crime podcast of all time. The fact that it is not in the top 50 true crime podcasts on Spotify is a disgrace. People apparently have terrible taste. Keep up the amazing work

Jamie Thomas

Lol yeah that was wild

A bill for wear and tear of the guillotine 😏

Really enjoyed all the historical audio clips!

Turns out I just had to be patient, sorry guys πŸ˜…

Only about 15 mins in, but very annoying that we aren’t being told whether the victims died from their injuries or were just wounded - am I missing something?

Kate Coen

Fascinating story. Didn't even care to alert their own citizens and those were the lives that "mattered". Smart adaptations as the story progressed but in retrospect it could ONLY be him. Good detective work in this case. Enjoyed the juxtaposing of it happening regardless of the borders, everyone was losing their minds then.

Alan

Ditto! People were pinning badgers to themselves. Say what?!

Helen

Love these more historical episodes!

Great episode. I feel like it's really hard to thread the needle on a case like this, to look at the crime and the investigation without lauding a fascist police system, and Casefile I think did this well. This was a rough one in terms of violence, but I am glad you covered it. I also appreciated the use of all the vintage news reels both this week and last week. Well done as ever!

AR

Just started listening and it took me a moment to realise people weren't lighting up their allotments with "phosphorescent badgers" 🦑

Emily

So not the same case as last week then? Just the same theme?
