Case 217: Kathleen Marshall

On Sunday, March 1 1998, crime scene examiners gathered at a residence on Main Avenue in the upscale Queensland suburb of Wilston. The two-storey, cream-coloured weatherboard home sat on a sloped hill that overlooked Brisbane’s CBD, which was five kilometres away. It was far from a remote location, yet the property’s position against the Eildon Hill Reservoir granted it a bushland backdrop akin to a rural homestead.

Case 217: Kathleen Marshall

Comments

I do believe they can. And animal groups can be unbelievably toxic. You’d be shocked at the drama that goes down amongst *betta fish* owners

It’s so odd that a spiritualist would kill. I mean people of any religious persuasion can. But as a spiritualist, under our belief system, it’s an unbelievably terrible idea. The probability of consequence (if not here, over there) is 100%, and most of us aren’t raised spiritualist but come into it after experiences. Hence virtually all of us, if not all, are true believers.

Cat people man….

Just as an aside, I have a permanent water supply (float bowl) for my dogs inside my house. It's just in case I fall down or get murdered.

I have seen the infighting in associations and groups first hand. Crikey, it can be viscious! After a couple of experiences I shied away from serving on committees!

HelpFind Ajax&Stamp

Fascinating, just got a copy of the book.

"Kathleen also had incredibly high standards. Except when it came to the state of her house. Her house was a trash dump."

Hayden Cooper

Also this is a fascinating case!!

While listening to this I’m thinking about the recent troubles being investigated about DNA lab. Thinking of Shandee Blackburn case is this the same DNA lab that was featured in Australian podcast?

This one goes down as a classic

As a cat lady…I can say it is not far fetched for a cat to be a motive for murder 😂😂 wow what a great case!!!

Ashley DeMeyere

Hate to be that person, Casey, but it’s “veterinarian” and “veterinary” (say “vet-rin-arian” and “vet-rin-ry”) not “vetenarian” 😅 Omfg this case though. NEVER has a Casefile case been full of so many twists, turns, and DRAMA. When Casey said “newspapers were comparing the case to an Agatha Christie novel” I fully agreed! It really does sound like a book, from the divorcee vet who chair a cat protection society with hints of charity corruption - the ex dramatically being stopped at a train station about to depart the state - the little frail old man being convicted - the Occult Society involvement - it’s just unreal! Amazing job team 👏

Never trust cats!

The cat did it

Christopher Worrel

Such a great episode guys, such a weird yet ultimately sad case :(

PoseidonXcomics

When the music started playing I was like “wait…what? Where is the cat people conspiracy?!”. I thought for sure that’s where it was headed.

John M

So…who did it?! 🤯

Fran L

Welcome back Casey ❤️ hope you’re feeling much better!

DetectiveTeals

Holy! I use to live 1.7km from that house when I lived in Grange. Talk about close to home 😳

DetectiveTeals

I felt like I was listening to an episode of Midsommer Murders! Not based on the quality- it was top notch as always, but the details. The veterinarian, the cat society, a diminutive bespectacled man w a cat in his arms, the blood spray on the bushes, the sundress, the petty squabbles between people who knew each other well, the cat murdering it’s owner possibly and walking away unscathed, classical music and of course the psychics and tarot readings. 😂

MsGrumpyTerrier

In such utter disarray they thought it was ransacked. My 15 year olds sons bedroom 😐

Taryn-Lee Biggar

Intense cat lady drama, psychic church drama, weird possibly false conviction, A Cat Did It theory, the funeral march, this episode had it all! Well done on a well written episode, Jess, & well done Mike on the inevitable musical fade out. I just want answers!!!! If it really was the palm reader guy, why????

Emily

Given that the Funeral March and the Casefile theme are in different keys, overlapping them would create jarring musical dissonance! As it is, there is a segue but because the march fades out as the intro fades in, the dissonance is minimal.

AR

....what did I just listen to

AR

Glad “Casey” is better.

Mariya Cassin

It was tastefully done Mike. Anything else would have been out of step with Casefile's respectful ethos.

Helen

What an opening... Goosebumps

Abhi Ram

I remember this case from when I was in high school. Brisbane can get really dark. Max Sica and the Singh family is another really interesting case.

SalBee

ah ok, no worries!

Casefile True Crime

Yeah, but the intro still seems a bit abrupt :D don't mind me!

Katarzyna Kudela

Hi Katarzyna, the original funeral march recording does fade into the CF intro softly. Is that what you mean? Mike

Casefile True Crime

Also feeling very called out around the 12 minute mark lol ETA the whole episode Haha

Eileen

just started listening, but you guys missed an opportunity to mix the funeral march so that it would fade into the Casefile intro, it would have been a banger

Katarzyna Kudela

I'm so happy the host is well enough to record again!

Eileen
