Case 136: Azaria Chamberlain

It was no secret that Lindy Chamberlain longed for a daughter. She and her husband Michael already had two sons - six-year-old Aiden and four-year-old Reagan - and Lindy hoped her third pregnancy would result in a girl. At 9:16 on the morning of June 11 1980, she gave birth to a healthy daughter. Weighing three kilograms, with dark eyes, black hair, and olive skin, Lindy and Michael named her Azaria Chantel Loren Chamberlain.

My God the poor family. Such a sad episode

Marie Gough

I never realized where the phrase “A dingo ate my baby” came from. I was not familiar with this case. I was outraged when the parents were found guilty. I’m glad justice won out in the end. After listening to this case and the Jonestown case, I will never use the phrases again. Knowing how tragic both cases were.

Jennifer

Must have missed it.

Mark Ofmalovia

Pretty sure he said what both are.

Bob Trenwith

Another stunning episode, Casefile Team. A horrifying ordeal, delivered very well.

Anna Burchfield

Welcome back Casefile team - I remember seeing the movie with Meryl Streep and Sam Neil and of course all the references to it in comedies. Quite cruel actually when you consider the context and how this family lost their child. Very interesting episode.

Captain Flint

Great episode CaseFile team! Being from Oz, it was always something a sort of knew bits about but never the full story, and especially the outcome. You covered all aspects! 10/10 👍👍

Amanda Lewis

Great episode! ♥️

Tiffany Meyer

Well they’re just mental then!

Iain Strachan

Google?

This is a very controversial case in Australia still as a large percentage of the Australian public still believe Lindy guilty despite the findings of the 2012 inquest.

Zachary

Ok, thank you!

Casefile True Crime

Great episode Casefile. I remember this case well. It was an absolute stuff up. I felt so sorry for the Chamberlain Family and still do. Disgraceful police work.

Michelle Kelly

Guys I think a brief explanation of what a dingo and Torana is would have been useful early on.

Mark Ofmalovia

I'm unable to replicate the issue. I'll update, if I find an example again. Fingers crossed, it was something odd on my phone.

kaelifa

I'm listening on ios and using Downcast. I'll try and find a timestamp for you.

kaelifa

Hi, the recording would randomly sound like it was underwater.

kaelifa

Yesssss! A new episode!!!

Casefile True Crime

I couldn’t play it. It played 5 to 10 seconds and then stopped. When I tried to start again it just kept doing the same

PETA McVicar

Hi Kaelifa, what kind of audio issues? Let us know so we can have a look, please. Thanks!

Casefile True Crime

Great episode. Did anyone else experience some strange audio issues in this episode?

kaelifa

Based on the Q and A, I was wondering what the first case back would be. I would never have guessed this one. Even though I have heard so much about this case, I didn't know a lot about the details. Very well done on a case that has ultimately taken on a life of its own

Maya George

I don't like to describe things as 'iconic' but of all the true crime cases in Australia, this would have to be the most iconic. The phrase 'a dingo ate my baby' is - as Casey says - has taken on a life of its known and is very much associated with Australia

Maya George

I've grown up with this case, I'm only a couple of years older than Azaria would be. It's one that has made me cry many times... The injustice of it all...

RubySpook

Great episode - a lot of my favorite tunes used as well glad you guys bring back and reuse some of the background songs a lot are so good

alan roosen

I think the only way to describe how famous this case is is that there’s a movie in which Meryl Streep plays Lindy Chamberlain. I can’t decide if it or Milat would be the biggest case in Australian history but it would be between the two.

Catherine Steele

Haven’t heard of this case before but I do live under a rock - it’s super well known I guess? Is it like Milat level big in Australia?

alan roosen

Very sneaky Casefile team, you said it might be out early on the AMA and bam 💥 it’s out the next day. Just about to tuck into it. Thank you 🙏 It didn’t take me long to recognize the case, as soon as I heard the word “Dingo” it all came very clear, definitely one of the best known Australian cases. It’s good to know that there was a positive outcome for the family, many, many years later.

So much more to the case that I thought - awesome job - well worth being a Patreon member for this podcast!

Jason Atkinson

Knew nothing about this, what an insane case. Thank you so much, welcome back!! ❤️

Shanne Janelle Smith

YESSSSSSS! Welcome back!!!

Megan Brennan

Oh my!! Just listened to the brilliant serialised podcast about this case, The Perfect Storm. Can’t wait to get stuck into this!! General Motors are a disgrace. They could have cleared them easily but did nothing.

Iain Strachan

Wow... Can't wait.

Natasha Howell

Wow! Talk about starting the year off with a bang!
