Case 96: The Toy Box (Part 1/3)

On March 22 1999, Sierra County police were dispatched to conduct a welfare check at a property in Hot Springs Landing, a small suburban community in the New Mexico town of Elephant Butte. Along the way, they ran into a visibly shaken witness who reported seeing a naked woman covered in blood running down the road with a chain clearly visible around her neck.

Fantastic ! One of your best !

In my humble opinion, this is some of the best story-telling that you've done, to date. I'm very familiar wth the case, and the fact that you were able to convey so much, without resorting to the shock value of the gory details, is an appreciated approach and refreshing take on such a popular case. Thank you for this, cannot wait to hear more.

wrong. Casey pronounced Rio Grande correctly. This is the way it’s pronounced in Spanish, and the way Mexicans pronounce it. Yanks pronounce it “grand” but that doesn’t mean it’s correct.

Holy shit. The suspense is real! Can’t wait for next week. Thanks for a great episode once again team!! And I wouldn’t worry too much about pronounciation - I doubt non-Australians can pronounce local Australian landmarks like you would. And speaking as an expat who’s name hasn’t been pronounced correctly by others for years now (including you Casey in AMA 9) I’m like ‘chill people!! 😂

Jesus this is a doozy

Vanessa

Brutal. I can see why this is going to be a 3-parter. We are about to get into some Blue Velvet areas folks

I was surprised to see that Casefile was covering this case. It’s the first time I have paused and thought of not listening. The case is perfect fodder for those who enjoy the most sadistic kinds of crimes. However, Casefile has always managed to tell awful cases with respect for the victims/survivors and refrained from glorifying the perpetrators. I chose to listen and the first episode is authentic Casefile. A lot of the gory details of this case are known. Casefile gives us more than that and that’s why it’s my favorite podcast. (And Casey is my favorite podcaster/narrator 😄)

Is 'Grande'. "Grand" + e (as in elephant) and it means "Big river" in Spanish. Btw, This episode was an extremely chilling one

Can never seem to win with these. I watched several YouTube videos of news stories. And all the reporters said it the way I did :(
