AMA live now

Hello all. I’m here. I made it. Sorry again for the confusion yesterday. Fire your questions in.

Comments

I’m a web developer here so I have a semi informed opinion on this. There is a 100% chance that any competent shop who might want to break a password would have a massive list of passwords to try. “nicetrynsa” sounds like just the sort of password you have someone spend time making up and adding to your list to run against whenever something like this comes up. The server being “hacked” could have been as simple as giving your computers a weekend to batter the server with your massive password list.

Doh!

My son (he is 2 now) likedyour voice as a baby

Mariya Cassin

too late again....

ann

Thank you for joining in everyone. Always a pleasure to talk to you all. See you at the next one!

Casefile True Crime

Thank you Joan. A very interesting case for sure. Lots going on.

Casefile True Crime

I always prefer the solved cases, and I finally figured out on Silk Road why I prefer them. I love hearing what the authorities are doing at the same time as hearing what the criminal was doing or thinking. I loved that the agent in Chicago started an entire investigation after finding one pill. Thanks to the casefile team for excellent research and material.

Joan G

Haha no I don’t

Casefile True Crime

Silly question. Do you ever sport your own swag (or as you'd say, "merch")? ;-)

Jamee K

That has to be extremely disappointing, given all time, effort and research you guys put into each episode. Thanks for answering!

Jamee K

All I can say is we had to remove it for the time being. No idea when/if it will ever be back.

Casefile True Crime

I still can't believe the sentence he received...

Jamee K

I'm sorry if you've answered this in previous AMAs, but what happened with the episode you guys removed from the feed (can't remember the episode name/number, but I think it was about the foursome traveling in Australia)?

Jamee K

Want to point out that it is very controversial that the judge used the solicited attempted murders to give a greater punishment to Ulbricht. We have precedent in the USA that sentence enhancements generally must be based on facts proven to a jury (Blakely v. Washington and Apprendi v. New Jersey). Whether the Supreme Court will apply those precedents to an enhanced punishment that was still within the allowed range remains to be seen.

Nick P

Oh so you’re right in the thick of it then!

Casefile True Crime

I live in Belfast, and I always stay in to avoid the crowds-- at least we had a good rugby day!

Haley McL

No unfortunately. It was a very quiet and uneventful one for me.

Casefile True Crime

Did you do anything fun for St Paddy's?

Haley McL

So this is why some believe the server was actually hacked by authorities. They don’t buy the story that they just stumbled across the passcode by looking at the servers history.

Casefile True Crime

Thanks, Casey! If my profile pic ever updates here, it's me with a Casefile mug! :)

Jamee K

Not really no. We obviously have to be careful with what we say though.

Casefile True Crime

In Silk Road episode 2, you mentioned that the server folders were encrypted, but that the passcode "trytocrackthisnsa" somehow didn't make it to Tarbell (sp?) until the US Attorney mentioned it. But how did the Iceland authorities get the passcode for the server's encrypted files? I don't think this was explained

Nick P

Do you ever feel at all uneasy about revealing information about unsolved cases? Particularly concerning highly dubious sounding ones like the Vancouver Island cases for example?

Mike Carter

No I don’t.

Casefile True Crime

Yes. Gotta be positive.

Casefile True Crime

I can’t say I have a favourite really. Anne is really good.

Casefile True Crime

Awesome! I think you will do justice to whatever one you are working on. Do you have a favorite true crime writer? Mine is Anne Rule... my mom took a training by her when GR serial killer was active.

Ashley Marie

Hi Marie. Yes we do. Currently working on one now. But it won’t be out for a while.

Casefile True Crime

Yeah we don’t have any limits/criteria on the cases we’ll cover. We are open to anything. Got any in mind?

Casefile True Crime

Thank you :)

Casefile True Crime

Thank you Amity. You too, have a good one.

Casefile True Crime

It was really different and I think that’s why I liked it so much! Thanks for pitching it Milly

Kishi

I thought the exorcism of Emily Rose was a good creepy one too. Hence case 11. I wanted to get the true story.

Casefile True Crime

Same on TCM! Scared the crap out of me and I never scare normally

Kishi

Do you have any kids?

Mariya Cassin

Sticky date pudding. I wouldn’t say favourite. But the one horror movie that managed to completely mess me up and keep me up for a month was the original Texas chainsaw massacre. That is a horribly disturbing movie. I was 12 or 13 when I watched it. So if I watched it now it might not be that bad. But not taking the risk!

Casefile True Crime

Hi Jennifer. We are overwhelmed by the amount of support we receive currently. We will be right to produce more episodes for a while yet. Thank you :)

Casefile True Crime

Little bit of both. Depending on the case of course.

Casefile True Crime

I don’t have any pets at all. I had a dog but she passed away many years ago. Hopefully your cats feel better soon.

Casefile True Crime

Will EAR/ONS ever be caught?

James Cutler

No idea. We don’t consider ourselves journalists or investigators at all. Have never made the claim. Storytellers would be a more appropriate title I think.

Casefile True Crime

Probably unsolved if I had to choose. But both.

Casefile True Crime

Thank you :)

Casefile True Crime

Not at the moment. But who knows in the future!

Casefile True Crime

Are you guys planning on doing any more serial killer cases? Those are my favorite!!!

Ashley Marie

One of our writers, Milly pitched that one. I’d never heard of it before then. It was definitely different and I wasn’t sure about it at first. But when I dived into it I thought it was a story that should be told.

Casefile True Crime

Ahh did I miss it?

Ashley Marie

Thabkyou for your service Jamee. Yeah it certainly is. Found it Hard to get my head around. Yep I’ve been a few times. Just short little stays of a few weeks. Loved it. I’ll be back.

Casefile True Crime

Can you cover a case from the former Soviet Union?

Mariya Cassin

Love you lots!!! You are so cool for doing this, thanks :)

Sinthya Holmes

Just popping in to say Hello because work... Thanks for covering the Mia Zapata case. I had never heard of it but it was a really interesting one and something different. Have a great day :)

Amity B

Favorite horror movie? Favorite sweets?

Sinthya Holmes

What is the best way fans like us can support you and enable you to produce more episodes. BTW - I agree with everyone above. Yours is my favorite podcast ever!

Jennifer Guidry

A lot of your scripts are delivered almost in a "who-dunnit" style where you leave the audience guessing at the outcome (if they don't know already). How much of this is by design and how much occurs organically through the storytelling?

Mike Carter

Thank you Kully. That changes constantly. Sometimes we know what we are doing two months in advance. Sometimes it’s more like two weeks! It constantly varies as some cases take a lot longer then others.

Casefile True Crime

Not really. I have a few quick trips here and there. But we are sticking to our three episodes on one episode off for the entire year - so that doesn’t leave a lot of time for holidays.

Casefile True Crime

I never know what to ask in these. I'm currently nursing two sick cats and wondered if you had any pets. I mean, I'm not saying I would stop listening if you hate cats but... 🤔 PS obviously love the show ❤️

Kim Holt

What do you think is the future of investigative journalism?

James Cutler

Are you more intrigued by solved or unsolved cases ?

Jennifer Guidry

You are by far the best podcast on air, BY FAR ❤️

Kishi

Pretty much all of the big ones I’d like to cover at some point. It’s just a matter of time.

Casefile True Crime

Any jobs going?..lol my hobby is true crimes to do it is as a job would be amazing lol

Kully Ahmed

What made you choose the janabi family as your latest podcast; how do you select what you cover?

Kishi

Coffee is my favourite. But I do like tea as well. Tea is good in the afternoons/evening.

Casefile True Crime

Hello to my podcast crush, hehe. 😉 Have you ever been to the States, Casey? BTW - I’m a army veteran who served in Iraq and had never heard the story you covered this week. Absolutely horrifying.

Jamee K

And obviously make sure you are well prepared. Choose your topic and dive in. Get after it. Get it done.

Casefile True Crime

How far in advance do you plan each case?..p.s best podcast I’ve ever listened to I tell everyone lol

Kully Ahmed

I would say just start! That’s what I did. Learnt as I went. Although I would say - do a lot of practise runs before you release your first episodes. Multiple recordings to make sure you get it all right. That’s something I would change if I could go back.

Casefile True Crime

Do you have any holidays booked this year?

Nicola Houlihan

What are some of the other cases you would like to cover?

Jennifer Guidry

Hi Erica. None at all. Not against them. They are just too permanent for my liking and I change my mind too much!

Casefile True Crime

Tea or coffee?

Nicola Houlihan

What advice would you have for aspiring true crime podcasters and/or someone starting their own true crime podcast?

James Cutler

Any tattoos?

Erica Ocaranza
