Case 53: The East Area Rapist 1976 (Part I/IV)

This episode scared the hell out of me. I was between 18 and 28 at the time. I almost moved to that are in the late 70’s. I’ve listened to this episode several times, and still scares me.

This one will help you to run!

I'm only up to episode 40 so far but listen when I am jogging so I am dreading this episode!

Really enjoyed this episode (if enjoyed is the right word..). Narration was spot on - dramatic but not OTT, really captured the intensity of the scenario. Also really impressed by how sensitively you have tackled such a horrible and delicate case.

Usually I listen to Casefile in bed before I go to sleep, but EAR/ONS has always scared the crap out of me, so I thought better of it and listened to it on my desktop with the lights on. I was not disappointed and I can't wait for the next part. One thing I love about Casefile is that it doesn't matter if you're covering a story I'm familiar with or not. If I'm not familiar with it it's like "Yea! Something new." If I am familiar with it it's still a "yea" because I know I'll learn new stuff alongside what I already know. That was definitely the case with this. I'm amazed y'all managed to fill in nearly two hours and we're not even knee deep into his story yet.

I thought the narration used in this episode was a perfect blend of "theatric" and "deadpan". The anonymous host lowered his voice just enough during the rapist's speech to create a sound chillingly similar to what I imagine the rapist's voice sounded like. I'm with Diana - the narration is amazing!

Emily Raymond

I am impressed that the feedback about the voices from Episode 52 was taken into account and that portions of 53 were re-recorded. For me personally, the more "deadpan" delivery makes it more riveting. I wish there was a better word than deadpan though, as I actually find the narration amazing. I like minimum theatrics--especially with this case as that phone call was creepy enough!! So glad I read enough online to know what to expect so made sure to listen first thing in the morning when it was bright and sunny out, lol!!

And forgot to mention the most important point, that once again Casefile presented the facts in such a way that the victims would not have their history desecrated or sensationalized. It is clear that every care is taken to preserve the dignity of the victims. I am certain this makes your job harder but I hope you know your listeners appreciate this, and that while other people may take the low ride Casefile always stands above the rest. I am sure Michelle McNamara would have loved this installment, and future ones as well, it is evident you care more about the victims than the additional listeners this story could have brought if you engaged in speculation or sensationalized and glorified the criminal.

I started following this case when I heard Michelle McNamara discuss her work on solving it. The horror of having to live in fear even now, 40 years later, is something that shakes me to the core.
