That was absolutely fantastic!

Just when I thought it couldn't possibly get any better...What an episode!

I also live close to Markham (Scarborough a suburb of Toronto) and I only vaguely remember this case. I loved how you told this story. You had me feeling bad for her being a victim and then slowly the story turned and you led me to see how she was the actual perpetrator. Excellent story telling! I listened to this case a few days ago and it is still on my mind. Best case yet and it was all due to the way you laid out the story. Kudos to you and your team!!!!

Michelle Cleland

I live right near this location and this is the first I've heard of it. Must have been walking around with blinders on! Well done! You guys always impress me with your presentation and fact finding.

Such a tragic story... I actually felt pretty sad for Jennifer, what a horrible feeling it must be to feel like you have to lie about who you are in order to please your family or anyone for that matter. Part of me feels like true justice should not only be about the final crime that took place, but I believe more professionals in the mental health industry should have looked deeper into how severe her PTSD had perhaps become. Who truly knows just how severe the abuse she endured on a daily basis was. Not that there is generally an excuse for having your own parents murdered... but would people feel differently if the abuse she endured had been physical or sexual rather than mental and emotional? I personally find that emotional abuse takes the biggest and longest lasting toll on a persons overall psyche, their judgment and also how fully they are able to mature. Psychologists have learned that often someone who suffers psychological abuse stops maturing emotionally near the onset of the abuse. I believe she should have been tried as a high school student or whatever age she was when the abuse began. She clearly is the true victim in this case, in my personal and empathetic opinion.

Grabbed me from that cold open. Brilliant episode guys!

Nick Cowling

Well done guys, another brilliant episode. πŸ‘

Ryan Beattie

Amazing episode! I was so stunned to hear the twists of this story. Hearing all the audio was a great addition.

Amanda Yost

Thank you for the comments and listening!

Casefile True Crime

Since the episode was published I have read about 60% of the book written about this case - " a daughters deadly deception". The Casefile episode covers pretty much everything the first half of the book does (however the chapter or two in detail about how the 4 co-convicted men were hunted down is worth a read. This wasn't a straightforward go find and arrest situation and Jennifer did nothing to help.) The book also details her early life and when the deception started, how and why. The subject of tiger parents is addressed with a few relevant sources consulted. Whatever the case, depression and/or oppression, an excuse for murder does not make

Jason Hodges

Congratulations on a brilliant, well researched, factual episode. Masterfully presented & produced. No matter what the case, I must applaud the Casefile team on always presenting the facts & not high drama storytelling. No matter whether you were aware of of this case or not, the detail that is built up, layer upon layer was intriguing.

MMH

Exactly, my feelings

Vinnie Romero

Have no sympathy. Yes, she could have left at any time. Also if she had actually progressed in life rather than done nothing since dropping out of high school and could show her parents her improving maturity perhaps their "draconian" regime may have relaxed a little. Unfortunate, but silly little girl.

Jason Hodges

Anyone find it hard to have any sympathy for Jennifer? I don't doubt her parents were "Tiger Parents" but it didn't sound like they were abusive and she could have left on her own. I mean she constructed that intricate web of lies and working on her own as long as she did

Vinnie Romero

She was a pathological liar to the point she believed her own lies. They needed to shatter the "house of cards" of her lies to get her to break

Vinnie Romero

Great episode! I try never to google any case subject I am not aware to make it more suspenseful for me... and this Ep delivered especially how you weaved the audio. Also a great look into a well done job by the Police

Vinnie Romero

Excellent podcast and chilling phone recording to able to hear her father groaning in agony. Yikes

Jane Hooley

What a way to start an episode.

Karl

I remember this like it was yesterday. I'm from Toronto and believe me, it shocked our city to the core. As if Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka weren't enough, now we have Jennifer Pan πŸ˜” Thank you so much for your brilliant work. You added so much to the story that I hadn't known.

Jen N.

But great case :) looking forward to you topping it with another

Jason Hodges

The other argument is if they didn't apply this forceful approach, would a calculated killer have walked. I would hope not

Jason Hodges

check YouTube for some extended police interviews. Is the state of sorrow she maintains sorrow for getting caught, or actual remorse? I doubt the latter. But it is interesting how far the police go in the final confession inducing interview ... even so far as, did the technical failure in the first interview room resulting in moving to a smaller one occur coincidentally or convenientally. There has been a lot said about the possible "Reith technique" used.

Jason Hodges

the police interview techniques are maybe questionable. You have to ask yourself though, are questionable interview techniques reasonable and Just in the pursuit of swift justice and minimising victim impact

Jason Hodges

There is no doubt she was at the centre of this and the protagonist in the whole thing

Jason Hodges

Good job telling this story! Jennifer's deception reminds me so much of Casey Anthony. Wow.

Lisa Schrant

The 911 call freaked me out at first. Great episode and thanks casefile!

Sylvia See

Oh man! This happened in my home town. I knew it as soon as I heard the 911 call. Imagine being at home and having this happen to you? πŸ’”

Erin McDonald

Brilliant! Can't wait to listen!
