Thanks, Casefile. I'm looking forward to Sunday again already :)

Gillian Freeman

Thanks for answering all the questions. My regards to you and everyone in your team :)

WillOwl11

Looks like we are out of questions so we might wrap it up there. Thank you everyone for tuning in and for all the questions. And most of all for your support here on Patreon. It means a lot to us.

Casefile True Crime

There seems to be a lot of dodgy players in Lindsay Buziak's case. The part that stood out most to me was how she had a gut feeling something was wrong and didn't want to do the house viewing. Her poor father.

Gillian Freeman

Would it be possible to get a few examples of cases you thought would be popular but weren't? Maybe your listeners (read 'I') can ponder this during free time?!

WillOwl11

Ok good to know. Thanks again for your amazing work and congrats to the whole team for your success so far.

Mishelle Taylor

Thank you Yvonne. Thank you Kym. Yeah definitely Manjari. I can't comprehend it either.

Casefile True Crime

Yeah that's right Manjari. After putting that episode together no. I'm going to pass on the movie.

Casefile True Crime

You're doing great work - thanks for your efforts - it's so interesting to see the podcast develop!

Kym McCauley

That reminds of the Julian Buchwald and Carolynne Watson case early on in your podcast. Seemed like such a terrible thing to do to someone so close to you. I just couldn't comprehend his thought process!

WillOwl11

That is another one we do plan to cover too

Casefile True Crime

I just don't think it's really taken off here yet. Podcasting is starting to get more well known. I think we will definitely see Australian companies enter the space. I mean they would be mad not to really.

Casefile True Crime

Thank you Halley. Hadn't heard of that case either.

Casefile True Crime

Yes - me too! It's incomprehensible that such an act can be planned over a period of time with no regard or empathy for the victim and their loved ones!

Kym McCauley

I mean even the opportunistic ones are probably mostly planned to. Paul Denyer didn't stalk his victims or choose them for any other reason that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and he wanted to kill. That is extremely disturbing as well. All of it disturbs me.

Casefile True Crime

One example, I have always been extremely unsettled about the brutality of Lindsay Buziak's murder. That was planned and pre meditated for quite some time. It really disturbs me.

Casefile True Crime

Congrats on having such a successful podcast guys!

Yvonne Constantine

Another intense qld one is the "house of horrors" from Toowoomba in 2005 where a juvenile and a 18 yr old (Maygar and Woodward ) were convicted of 3 murders. A third juvenille participated under duress. The convicted juvenile was the first child to be publicly named in qld.

Halley

It's really hard to gauge. Some episodes that I thought would be really popular. Weren't. And other cases I wasn't that sure about absolutely exploded. Obviously the bigger cases are always right up there. The Yorkshire Ripper series and Peter Falconio which was such a massive story both here in Australia and in the U.K. are extremely popular. That's easy to understand. But some of the lesser known cases, I haven't been able to work out what makes some extremely popular and other not. I mean all our episodes are doing really well now, but there are spikes in different episodes that don't always make sense.

Casefile True Crime

I think that true crime murder cases are so fascinating because thankfully they are an exception and only happen to a minority of people - it is so tragic when a victim just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time! Do you notice in your research a distinction between cases where a murder is premeditated as opposed to being opportunistic?

Kym McCauley

I think he mentioned in the previous AMA that he hasn't watched the movie and would probably not watch it either. I don't know if that has changed :)

WillOwl11

Yeah I was amazed at how little known that case is too.

Casefile True Crime

Even though you have loads of listeners, some cases are more popular than the others (for example, I don't see many discussion about the Katherine Knight case even though it was brutal). Do you analyse such patterns and pick your future cases accordingly? Or is there some other kind of post-publishing research that goes into your listener rate?

WillOwl11

Judges decision

Casefile True Crime

Yeah that definitely is an objective. My main goal is just to stay right out of the way of the story and deliever nothing but the facts to you. It is hard at times. I found it hard in the earlier episodes. I did fail occasionally too. I remember commenting on a hedges decision in the Donna Wheeler case. And there is no doubt a few other things. But I think it's something I've been able to do as time has gone on. It doesn't really affect the script writing, I just make sure to bite my tounge :)

Casefile True Crime

I had no idea about Frankston/Tynong North, and I'm from about 10 mins from Frankston. The Frankston Serial Killer was the first I heard and is still my favourite. You also got me on to the fact that there's 2 whole seasons of "Forensic Investigators" on YouTube from the notes, so double wins for me!

Tobias Taylor

Yeah definitely. Especially after copping a bit of flak on the early iTunes reviews over there about the accent and my narration 😀

Casefile True Crime

But also bringing attention to unsolved cases. Frankston/Tynong North. Lindsay Buziak. Helen Munnings. Lisa Marie Young and others is also satisfying.

Casefile True Crime

I don't really have one to be honest. If I had to pick I'd probably say the north Hollywood shootout. Because only the bad guys lost their lives. Plus that case always blew my mind from the time I saw the footage on the news over here as a kid.

Casefile True Crime

Okay, sorry I must have zoned out when it was mentioned! Another one for the future if they ever release the details is the Greenough Family Massacre. The murderer William Mitchell has been denied parole twice now.

Mishelle Taylor

Thank you Nick. It's what we strived to do when starting out. So it's great to hear that.

Casefile True Crime

Did you ever see the Snowtown movie?

Tobias Taylor

Thankyou Peter. That is a good question. It's not something I ever really did before. So it must be that I've discovered a hidden talent!

Casefile True Crime

Yes, it was a very shocking.

Gillian Freeman

I think not having a certain bias about the details of any case and striving for an objective narrative is something that sets you apart from most other crime podcasts. Was this an intentional decision? Does it sometimes get difficult to maintain objectivity? How does it affect your script writing process?

WillOwl11

Yeah definitely I get emotional while going over these cases. Snowtown was probably the worst as far as gruesomeness and depravity. But I also get riled up at the unsolved ones too.

Casefile True Crime

Were you surprised to learn so much of your audience is USA/Canada?

Nick P

What is/are the episode(s) of Casefile that you'd call your favourite?

Tobias Taylor

Hi Mishelle. Yes that is on our list of cases to cover. It got a brief mention in the Prue Bird case. But we do plan to devote an entire episode to it.

Casefile True Crime

Oh, it makes absolute sense. I mean, as one of the Australian minority on here, I wish I could get Blue Apron and all that good stuff you guys advertise, but I'm really here for the content. I was more just curious about whether there were many companies around Australia who'd considered podcasts as an advertising space, especially one as popular as Casefile.

Tobias Taylor

Yep I definitely keep an eye out for developments. When it's a major breakthrough like the Claremont serial killer arrest I heard from listeners first though. They were onto that before me. But I do actively keep an eye out on the other ones.

Casefile True Crime

There was a book publisher from here who enquired about an ad for a true crime book. But it never went ahead. Possibly there was one other. A jewellery company of some sort. But again. Never went ahead. They are the only two I can recall. It's not really a done thing here yet. It's mainly US based companies. And to be fair something like 80 per cent of our audience is from the US + Canada. So it makes sense. People sometimes complain we run US ads, but that's why.

Casefile True Crime

Snowtown was super thorough too. That episode was exhausting to listen to, I can only imagine how it was to make it.

Tobias Taylor

Snowtown was super thorough too. That episode was exhausting to listen to, I can only imagine how it was to make it.

Tobias Taylor

Wanted to thank you and the crew for the time and effort you put into your work. The research and level of detail are what differentiate you from other crime podcasts.

Nick P

That's a great question ?

Michael

Will it get more support if I say, "Go Roosters"? Even though I have no idea what this is all about! 🙊

WillOwl11

Hi. I wanted to say that you and the team have an amazing ability to distill complex cases into gripping and easily understood naratives. Is this a skill that you had prior starting the podcast? Or have you discovered a hidden talent?

Peter Hinchley

The Port Arthur episode was really thorough . Do you find it difficult not get emotional.

Michael

No never heard from him. There could possibly be more updates on that case coming up though.

Casefile True Crime

Hi Host, have you heard of the Bega Schoolgirl Murders? I grew up in the area and it was such a big shock to the community of small, "safe" downs in the south coast of NSW.

Mishelle Taylor

We are still open to it though.

Casefile True Crime

Yep we definitely have looked at that one. There are a few other podcasts that have covered it though. So that can sometimes cause us to look elsewhere.

Casefile True Crime

American history X is a cracking movie. So so powerful. Yep love the living end. Other awesome Aussie punk bands. Frenzal Rhomb. Bodyjar. Local Resident Failure.

Casefile True Crime

How often do you follow up on the unsolved cases which you have already covered so as to check for new information? I know we've got some updates later on the Lisa Marie Young case but do you actively pursue some sort of lead to understand the current situation?

WillOwl11

Have you had many Australian companies approach you to appear on Casefile as a sponsor?

Tobias Taylor

A while back you gave an update on the Lisa Marie Young case, how a person named Chris had made a complaint about his name being used in the case, even though it was public information. You gave an open invitation for him to contact you. Did he?

Gillian Freeman

Definitely a commitment. Some epic episodes though. So worth it.

Casefile True Crime

They do often cover cases that are well known over here in Australia, I really like the idea of a Hinterkaifeck episode. Absolutely chilling.

Tobias Taylor

I'm a Roosters fan.

Casefile True Crime

I know you guys usually don't cover cases that are very famous but do you have any plans of covering the hinterkaifeck murders?

WillOwl11

Yep - that sounds like a potential future episode.

Casefile True Crime

As long as he's not a Bulldogs supporter, Mr Casefile is alright :)

Gillian Freeman

The name definitely rings a bell. But I can't recall anything about it. Just looking at the wiki page.

Casefile True Crime

Who do you like if not the broncos? Also, I'm clearly missing something, being a Melbourne toff who doesn't hear anything about NRL... Hahahaha

Tobias Taylor

Banned! Haha. Hello Michael. Thanks for that. Yeah I nothing better then listening to podcast on a road trip. I love it. I haven't listened to the radio for years. Ether podcast or iTunes!

Casefile True Crime

Haha, yep :)

Gillian Freeman

Have you heard of the mysterious Bogle-Chandler deaths in Sydney? I think that's the only Australia case I've heard of not mentioned in the podcast yet.

Nick P

I did yeah. I was on his side.

Casefile True Crime

Go the Broncos .

Michael

Hello Manjari. Basically anything we can get our hands on. No we don't visit specific locations. This is something I would like to do though. I'd love to go even more in depth and personally interview people etc on future cases.

Casefile True Crime

I had only heard of one Australian Punk band before (the Living End) and enjoyed hearing another. And then one of the Decline's songs you sampled included a sample from my favorite movie (American History X). Life is bizarre sometimes!

Nick P

Go the Broncos .

Michael

Over 400 Patrons ! Keep up the great work , I drove from Brisbane to Rocky and listened to back episodes was better than listening to the radio .

Michael

On his computer there was a lot of material relating to young girls.

Casefile True Crime

No. The vast majority of information on this case is in Italian though. So we had to rely on google translate. Anna did a fantastic job with that. It did make things difficult though. They identified the motive as sexual.

Casefile True Crime

I've started listening to Darn Carlin and he's really good. Fascinating stuff. It's a commitment though, some of his pods are 4 hours long!

Gillian Freeman

In the Operation Mayan episode, do you agree with the police officer that seemed to claim the ends justified the means in breaking department policy to get a confession?

Nick P

Hello from Germany! What is your research process while compiling case information? Some of the cases have been from Australia so do you get the time to visit those locations involved?

WillOwl11

I also listen to Jocko podcast

Casefile True Crime

Definitely hardcore history. The research of that show is phenomenal. It's something I really had in mind and wanted to do with casefile. Research research research! And the story telling of Dan Carlin is brilliant. Highly recommend it.

Casefile True Crime

You are correct! The sunshine state will feature in an upcoming episode. Within the next 5-6 I believe. Haven't heard of that one. Sounds interesting.

Casefile True Crime

I'd love to hear this - I've heard the Beaumont Children covered before, but I think it would be AMAZING to hear someone Australian cover it.

Tobias Taylor

Hi host. I found today's case interesting, and since I'd never heard of it before, I was listening not knowing whether it had been solved or not. I was definitely pleased to hear it had been. I was wondering about his motive, did you find any info on possible reasons why he chose Yara, or was it more opportunistic?

Gillian Freeman

Another one from me - What other podcasts do you listen to, and what were some of the inspirations to start Casefile? I remember reading a little on this in an interview Mr. Casefile (my name for the anonymous host) gave a while back, were there any other inspirations other than Joe Rogan's podcast for you guys?

Tobias Taylor

I'm afraid those of us in Brisvegas have been left out - I think Queensland is the only state you haven't covered in Australia! You might be interested in the bizarre murder of the President of the Cat Protection Society- involved the first person in Australia to be convicted of a crime solely on DNA evidence!

Kym McCauley

Yes we do plan to cover that case definitely. No time frame at this stage.

Casefile True Crime

For me it's the unsolved ones. I like trying to bring as much attention to these cases as possible. I know Mike is more of a fan of the mystery type cases like The Somerton man. I havent actually asked Vicky, Anna or Andrew

Casefile True Crime

Haha, I'm a huge Broncos fan :) :)

Gillian Freeman

You've reference the Beaumont children case in other episodes. Is that one you plan on covering?

Nick P

As long as you don't for the Broncos you can stay 😀 haha kidding of course

Casefile True Crime

It just wasn't worth the work to try and do it anymore especially with the talents of Mike and Andrew. We get. Lot more listens now, we were a virtually unknown podcast back then. So maybe more bands/artists would be open to it now.

Casefile True Crime

Hi Nick. In those early episodes I contacted a tonne of different independent bands/musicians/artists of all different types. Unfortunately I never heard back from most of them. When I did hear back it was usually a month later. I remember emailing the decline and getting a reply back in less then an hour. Which is awesome because they are one of my favourite bands. It wasn't long after this that Mike joined the team, then Andrew after that. So all episodes are now originally composed. But using other bands is something I'm definitely open to in the future.

Casefile True Crime

Yep, 7pm suits me in Brissy too, Kym :)

Gillian Freeman

What particular crimes are you and the rest of the team most interested in/fascinated by?

Tobias Taylor

Hello - time suits me - 7pm in Brisbane

Kym McCauley

Hello, I was wondering if you could comment on the choice to use a band (The Decline) in episode 3 and why it seemed to be only done for that episode.

Nick P

Not sure how this time will go. We have to experiment with different times though to give all parts of the globe a chance to join.
