Episode 3 of my radio show features songs in the general theme of murder (so obviously you can see why these are inspiring!). I hesitate to say the episode is murder ballads, since they aren't technically all ballads, and there's a whole history to that particular style of songwriting that is very interesting and maybe something to cover at a later date.
