I have a lot of DMR's and/or semi-auto sniper setups in different calibres. I've now convinced myself that 5.56 is a poor choice for this role, at least beyond 500-600m. I'm now thinking about what other options make sense in the AR-15 platform size. 6mm ARC might be an option, although it's almost unobtanium here (I'm in Switzerland).
I think it would be interesting to run an AR in 6.5 Grendel or 6 ARC to show up the alternatives. Of course, you probably won't see much difference less than 500m - you'd have to use 900-1000m to show it off the differences.

well i'm glad it fumed up because it was good data to present as a potential issue for a revered platform. That said the next episode is also a mk12 that absolutely dominates the course and takes top spot with a sub-minute performance.

Understand - when I'm doing accuracy testing with big rifles, or smaller ones with cans, I have a portable fan that I use to disperse the mirage or at least minimize it. Wouldn't be a good look on the tactical tubes, though.

If you watch the debrief, I was struggling with the mirage. There are two more runs that we dissected in the debrief, one faster and one slower, the faster one I hit a wall at 500 when the mirage/ smoke overtook the scope. The slower one actually scored a faster time because mirage built up slower and I nailed the 720 with a single shot.

Kewl - fits with my experience with my (DD) Mk 12, although I've not yet tried it with 77 OTM. But with 69 gns, it struggles past 600-650m with any difficult wind. With better conditions, even 900m is do-able.
