I had that thought too! haunted (positive) by the delivery of “turn over then” forever 😵‍💫✌🏼 ooh, yes, totally “violation” in a broad sense! transgression as necessary to resolution is how it lands for me? certainly appropriate considering Tsvetaeva’s historical context + relevant to the [status play] theme here. the poem is loaded with personal longing as inseparably tangled with political realities. I find Tsvetaeva to be a deeply tragic figure. Not to always gab about my academic career lol but I did some research about her experiences in exile, particularly comparing her trajectory to Nabokov’s + why he thrived and she returned to Russia doomed, basically. Bicon is CORRECT 🫡 the love poetry she wrote to/for women is some of her most ardent work, I think! Sophia Parnok was a notable lover of hers, a lesbian Russian poet if you’re looking to dig into early Soviet sapphic stuff! this concept of a Lover as active in the “service of love” is sooooo Certified Yearner™️ coded, I’m fucking obsessed; thank you so much for sharing! She’d def be into this; Tsvetaeva is for the yearners 1000%. Okay! I think I know what the brain worms were trying to piece together about this very lovely poem: 🌺 I initially teehee’d over “the turnover of empire and a nobleman has entry” for…obvious reasons. 🌺 “Charged spaces between thought + action” yes, I read this as tenuous, somewhat fearful meditation, and laced with a threat of violence/violation? And I mean "violation" in a very broad sense, the way a concubine’s nails might violate the fleshy pad of their thumb while they wait anxiously. Something about the violation is necessary for resolution (which I suppose would make sense here through the lens of the Russian Revolution). Also that last line is bruuuuutal since she was exiled in ‘22 (yes, I was too curious, and I had to read about her. Bicon alert 🤩!) 🌺 What my brain worms were actually remembering was pastoral Latin elegy. The imagery here, a Lover, seemingly inert but clearly occupied with many works, as they wait patiently for their Beloved … That reminded me of how my fave of the elegy boyz thought of love, that the Lover was actually a solider of Love and in a fight much more meaningful and urgent than your typical soldier-turned-senator: https://imgur.com/a/IZv2gy9. Based on what little I've read about her (mostly from The Essential Poetry from 2015), I feel like she'd be into this vibe! 🌺 “Patiently, as one awaits rhymes” also reminded me of the elegists' use of the form to talk about poetry itself and the work of making it, so the Beloved being verses themselves. While flipping through one of my translation journals, I came across a Marina Tsvetaeva poem that I translated a few years ago, and it immediately brought Bookish Concubine x Queen to mind. Tsvetaeva (27 March 1923) 📜Original poem in Russian by Marina Tsvetaeva (1892-1941) 📜English translation by me, rachel 🍓 ~ Obvious tie of the concubine x Queen simile aside, I think there are resonances with themes of the audio in the exploration of the charged spaces between thought + action, seismic shifts resulting from desire lived out loud, and the interplay of deference + divinity. I hear, “How can it be that you’re so beautiful to me? No, no, not adoration, Your Highness; it’s anger, it’s obsession,” echoed in these lines. The last stanza also gives, “I can’t believe there can be more afternoons like this. In all my days, in heaven or earth, I never would’ve dreamt it.” I’ve now thought about this script alongside the words of Tsvetaeva AND Shakespeare, August… consider yourself counted among my favorite writers! 💗

Love, love, love the poetry! The sound design in this audio was delectable, truly immersing. I've been on a historical fiction frenzy as of late and I've realized that there's a lack of strong female protagonists in most novels (due to time period constraints,rules, and the scandalous nature of it all, etc...) but this audio was such a nice referesh! Alright, let me gather myself because the writing in this audio went so hard. Took me a full week just to sit with this and process but here we are. 🪑 First off, I just have to say, your writing on these audios is seriously getting better and better. I’m absolutely here for all of it. ❗️ I don’t even know what it was but I was immediately enamored with this speaker straight out the gate. And then there’s the way he’s so reluctant, thinking he can’t be enough for her because of their class difference? There’s something so vulnerable about it, and it adds a whole new layer to the story. I honestly don’t know how you do it, but you weave character dynamics into your audios so naturally. The interactions between characters always feel fresh, and I love how the writing transitions seamlessly from dialogue to the more intimate moments. It’s clear you put thought into how the story and its circumstances build up from start to finish. That constant hesitation from him, thinking he’s not worthy or doesn’t know how to treat her like a queen? It just hits right in the feels. 😩 And then the way she reassures him that it’s not what she needs from him? WHEW. That moment of calm, understanding? And when she gives him the go-ahead, and he just completely loses it? That feral energy was everything. 😮‍💨 Also, can we talk about the soundscapes? Not me hyperfixating on bird sounds in a sexy audio but it really helped me imagine the setting, which made the audio even more immersive. And those wind chimes at the end? UGH 🤌🤌 You’ve seriously outdone yourself AGAIN and 2025 is just beginning! At the rate we’re going, February is absolutely going to ✨annihilate✨ us isn’t it 🥲

Being real, the delivery of that “turn over then” has me by the throat. There’s so much story here, being told in so many layers. As long as poetry is cultivated on earth, so long will our lovers’ names resound” - Shaikh Mir Sayyid Manjhan Rajgiri (2000). Madhumalati: An Indian Sufi Romance (A. Behl & S. Weightman, Trans.). Oxford University Press. (Original work published ca. 1545) Well well well, what do we have here?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Feeling extremely “I’m not trapped in here with you, you’re trapped in here with me” about this one. I spent about 80% of my college years translating things from one language to another or transforming a clunky translation into something poetic or more modern (with varying degrees of success). Briefly, on translation, beyond meaning-making, finding a balance between my personal touch and the intentions of the author, and sufficient understanding of the cultural context(s) in which the original text was written, I found the most difficult part of translation to be diction. Finding the “perfect” word to capture meaning completely and with the most resonance is super hard! I would agonize over it often! It’s also a somewhat misguided task. Aiming for “perfection” (completion) is to try to ossify a moment in time and foreclose possible futures where you might choose a different word based on how you as the translation function have changed over time. Eventually, after getting out of my own way, I found it more meaningful to be responsive to my translation preoccupations at a given time rather than being Right. This Speaker (who I need SO badly, I’ve looped around to being scared of how much I like him and thus would like to never listen to this audio again) has a similarly present, adaptive approach. This has huge implications for his work as translator, as scribe, as masseur, as lover. I have to liken him to one of my other most favoritest boys, the yummiest guy, Spanking Bestie, with his capacity to rise to the needs of the moment. He is a dweeb, a total and utter nerd, and he seems to relish the opportunity to both display his knowledge and to be a student of her body. Where, how hard, how fast, how much, when to escalate, etc etc. He is SO good precisely because of his keenness, his ability to patiently observe and act with intention as a world is opened to him. Turning to the poetic universe informing this audio, omg Sufi poetry? For me?! You shouldn’t have! Have to say thank you, August, for unintentionally reminding me of Madhumalati, one of my favorite pieces of poetry from college! I found using the Sufi cosmology outlined by the translators and utilized by the author a helpful and fun lens through which to read/hear this audio. In the author’s cosmology, there are six planes that represent manifestations of the Absolute (God, the beloved [as here], your Medici-like benefactor, all being apt interpretations). That cosmology charts the cycle of fundamental unity/oneness, then separation, then oneness once more: 1️⃣ Level of Oneness (“unconditioned undetermined world of Absolute Oneness…prior to the beginning of everything): scene opens with both of them in the garden (paradise) together 2️⃣ Level of Unity (“first degree of manifestation…this is the world in which the Absolute manifests in the form of light, unity”): the queen is a poetry reader and writer, the light of something in him is revealed to be in her as well. 3️⃣ Level of Comprehensiveness (second degree of manifestation of the divine via literary forms [of Speaker and Listener, in this case], “plurality, identities, and interrelatedness”): the queen’s body is uncovered; the two lovers touch for the first time. Concubine makes clear that he doesn’t know her and must be instructed on how to touch her -> they are distinct entities, no longer one. The Concubine offers additional information on how different they are from each other and he from the other concubines. But in naming these perceived barriers, he underscores the falsehood of their difference. "S: I'm not like the other concubines 🥺. L: Yes, exactly 😍! Me either!" 4️⃣ Level of Souls (“world in which the human soul and God are aware of their separation and suffer the pain of Love in consequence”): Both of them are animal creatures, not Queen and Concubine. He can’t use his identity of scholar to reason his way out of this dilemma (longing for her desperately, but feeling chained social stratification and his own perceived inadequacy). They’re officially yearning to become one again. He is delighted by her humanity and having been revealed to him, he feels the pain of not being joined with her. In this narrative, they suffer this agony for a mercifully brief time. Breathwork in this part goes crazyyyyyyyyyy 5️⃣ Level of Imaginal Forms (“This is a world symbolized by picture-galleries, gardens reminiscent of Paradise, and young and beautiful unawakened maidens. It is in the picture-gallery that Manohar and Madhumalati meet for the second time and where she tells him her beauty cannot be seen with ordinary eyes”): I need you to stay with me here. This is the edging (AITW galaxy brain time dilation device). They slide into a different plane entirely where their titles have no influence over their relationship to each other. In fact, they are the barriers that have been in the way of unity. Of course he’s freaking out and can’t believe it having encountered “the divine” fully and would like to extend this moment for as long as possible, this seemingly impossible place where they’re equals. Additionally, the breeding would result in an entity that truly makes them one. 6️⃣ Level of Sense Experience (“world of bodies”): this is them snapping back into the real world, but having gained something: appreciation of their union because they now understand what it meant to be separate. Here, love is special knowledge, and not everyone (like her other concubines) can attain this level of education. They cannot join with her in the ways he has. Fugue state prose: He is not immortalized in poems, his story etched into stone for perpetuity. Rather, he lives on in the echoes of grip on the curves of my body, the wetness forming in my mouth. The blind devotion of the statuesque concubines now leaves me cold, loved but lonely and unknown. Idk about everyone else but I voted for this not because august tricked me but because it’s the one he wanted to do so I thought it would turn out best (also the breeding). The language is more flowery I think it is of an earlier time period than others and the reference to the female orgasm being helpful for fertility adds to that theory. Alot of these period pieces have to find a way to navigate power dynamics inherent to gender relations at the time. You do such a good job putting the listener characters in positions of power where their yes or no would mean something. Subbing is often just hotter when you had some power to give away in the first place. I love his commitment to separating love from lust and the theme of admiration even when he’s in those guts.
