Here's the SFW audio/video for the month, a behind the scenes writing audio, taken from a few sessions of writing this audio that came out today. I cut out a lot of thinking, but we still only get to about the 10 minute mark of the actual audio, before all the NSFW stuff starts.
You'll notice that I changed stuff even from recording this to the final audio, but hopefully this gives an interesting look at my writing process, which people have been asking about.

2025-04-23 00:55:23 +0000 UTCAs someone who falls into the endless exposition trap, I’m really going to try to internalise using dialogue for “exposition with efficiency.” You’re good at trusting the audience to be smart enough to pick up those fast and/or subtle context cues too. This was so interesting to watch, I learned a lot! You understand your medium so well and I like the idea of leaning into and embracing some of the inherent corniness of genre (but understanding that’s also part of the joy!).

August has such a talent for nuancing the writing and performance that builds the setting and characters in a way that feels so organic. Dialogue is the hardest thing for me to write usually, it end up being so clunky. Lowkey feeling inspired to try writing again this new year!

I really appreciate the insight into your process, I'm always so curious how writers outline and brainstorm, and because you're writing audio scripts it was interesting to see what's different and what's similar to my own outline process. I will always stop what I'm doing and tune in for process breakdowns like this, so thank you so much for sharing! I also wanted to say, as far as a livestream goes... I think that could be a really fun idea! Since I'm a little newer here, I'm not sure if you've done a live before, but I think it could be interesting from the perspective of workshopping many ideas at once versus script writing on the spot. I'm not sure about you, but I think I would get a little overwhelmed trying to produce what you were able to in this video with a live audience. That being said, I'm sure you have a dozen little random audio thoughts and it could be fun to throw those out to the chat and talk through the vibe of those pieces knowing they may or may not ever result in a full script and I'm sure the Moans would really enjoy the little previews. I'll admit, as a brand new subscriber, I found myself listening to all your SFW audios first and really enjoy listening to you chat and essentially podcast, and I'm sure a lot of others feel the same. Anyways I'm rambling, but thank you for this and I look forward to whatever's next!

It shifts the weight when sitting so it could help relieve your back especially if you have to sit for a few hours doing work. Hearing the audio and seeing the idea-to-script process was really intriguing! It’s interesting getting a peek into your thought process and what the writing and creativity look like when making an audio. Personally, there’s a greater appreciation with every layer that gets peeled back and we get to see/hear behind the scenes of what goes into making an audio. I’ll endlessly praise your pacing because you truly have an intuitive grasp and emphasis, knowing exactly when to linger on a detail or move swiftly through a point. I wonder while you’re writing and the dialogue is flowing, if that’s something you keep in mind or don’t think about until certain things happen in the audio? Or go back and edit/change where you want to build anticipation, slow down to savor moments of connection or quicken the pace during scenes of heightened desire? It’s was cool seeing the script slowly come together and hearing how you bring those words to life. I’m curious if you sometimes improvise big parts of the dialogue while you’re recording or if you stick mostly to the script while changing a line here and there? And before I forget…Holy Hand Kink Batman?! Can a hand audio be in the works? 👀

I am fascinated by how quickly you’re able to write, re-write, record SFX, and edit audios in a relatively short amount of time. AND come up with character back stories too! And I appreciate that you think about not having the Speaker just repeat what the Listener is saying - it’s what makes your Speaker character sound so natural. I must admit that sometimes it’s a little hard for me to follow along when I’m unsure what the Listener is saying and trying to pick up the context based on the Speaker’s lines but I try not to overthink it and go with the audio’s flow. I do hope you consider doing some kind of livestream. It doesn’t have to be for script-writing either. But audience participation in something would be fun, I think. Also, I’m sorry to hear about your back! Please please please get it checked out if you can. I hope it’s not serious and that you’re taking it easy. ❤️ take care

A few things I noticed: If you capitalise hand kink audio, you’ll have to do it, right???? (Plz, good people in the comments, back me up on this one) This is not very mindful when you were like look how much I wrote for spies. It’s been 10 years (not literal 10 years but). Where’s the sequel💀 Why is it so funny when he can’t say “sex” without giggling🤣 Also, is this the same man who fed us lines like I’m gonna use you like a property and he can’t say sex out loud🤣 It is very reassuring how you set up the background stories before you go into the actual scene. I do think it makes a difference when you lay out the foundation first. Sometimes when I listen to other nsfw audios (yeah I’m cheating on you with other male vas lol), I kinda feel like the characters were too generic to leave an impression. It’s not always a bad thing. I just have a soft spot for strong characters. I can’t speak for everyone, but I do enjoy a movie-like moment. I like the stray dog line. I’m also aware of the lines not being colloquial enough, but never with you, August. You could literally read Apple’s terms and conditions and a lot of us will be like omg that is so cute. Another personal preference is that I also like when characters mirroring other characters’ previous lines. That being said, do you yield, *screaming* This is just an intrusive thought, but have you thought about reading comments for a sfw audio? I know we have left some pretty nsfw comments, but there are still tons of innocent comments, you know👀

I’d love to see a hybrid of your writing-oriented walkthrough suggestion (where he talks a bit about specific lines/world building) and his past idea from the audio process SFW where he mentioned maybe breaking down the SFX/sound design elements on older audios like he did with Spidey! Basically, any sort of “commentary” style content would be so awesome to see/hear! 🤝 I’m also a character-forward gal when it comes to the “approach” to stories that resonates most with me! 100% agree that August’s work nails this and it suits this format so well. Your question about pacing is something I’ve wondered too! I’ve never felt the build-up was too short/too long and that’s impressive to me when there is a real range of how far into an audio he gets before the NSFW stuff starts in earnest!

And I also felt a rush when I saw our boy “Spank Therapy” on the page! It was like seeing him at a small local venue having seen him do MSG. Nuts! That’s so interesting comparing the Pixar and Ginsburg ideas. This is also what I was hoping, that I would get to see the processes of the writers of the HBC. Maybe you would know this because you’re a writer, I’ve also heard the writing process compared to a suitcase and you have to shake it to find the important Idea? Writing it down, I realize now that sounds crazy, so maybe I made that up 😭 “Playing little games with yourself to get over any ‘blocks’ to idea generation” is just a great lens to use to understand life. There are very few things that are the final performance, you can have as many “rehearsals for living” as you like. Also, what an incredible question!!!

It was very cool watching your first/second-ish draft process because there’s a lot happening: pre-planning for SFX, distilling ideas, finding the right words and cadence you want to use, different line deliveries, considering the pacing of the audio, etc etc all while offering us insights into the process we’re watching! Classic AITW layering. Regardless of what you are doing in the moment, you are keeping the finished product in mind and how the various components will impact the quality of that product. Like the SFX BTS, being unfamiliar with these processes, I was 😲 the whole time. I don’t think the background stuff is too much! Even if it doesn’t make it into the audio explicitly, I think the backstory came through in your delivery. He’s seeking vengeance and is angry at the bourgeoisie, he’s not *only* fearful of losing his family’s land. And for the L, their helping him could feel very Eat Pray Love, a story they tell their friends to demonstrate goodness. But with rich backstory, you avoid that trap nicely. “Can we get to the same place in less lines?”. Yes! Your economy of language is really impressive, it’s one of your biggest assets imo! Was it helpful talking out your ideas like this was a stream to get to idea #4, 5, etc? Or is this what your internal monologue is like anyway? Would I like a stream of you writing??? On some level yes, but I think it would also make me anxious? At least with a comment section, you can go through various ideas, requests, etc at your own pace, but I could understand a stream feeling like an open fire hydrant… Maybe if it were for a silly audio, like a throwaway? Maybe Harvey’s Day Out lmao Thanks for doing this, it was very insightful! I love an Inside Baseball situation so I’ll take whatever manifestations of that you’re willing to record. A little sneak-peak into that insane head of yours that destroy us week-in, week-out 😮💨 You know EXACTLY what you did when you scrolled up, you fiend. “Weekly Breeding Lifestyle”? “Wedding audio”? You’re gonna expect a lot of feedback on that. God, I still can’t believe the duality of you; the kind of work you produce vs the awkwardness and giggling nature you possess! Can you not tear up my heart, thank you very much? When you were talking about jotting down the ideas before you start writing I’m like, yeah this is such a research approach with identifying the idea, the characters, the scenery, the flow, what works and what doesn’t. Top notch stuff. Streaming a script-writing with us would be SO AWESOME! Of course the final idea and script is all yours to alter but I would love to jump into throwing ideas in there 😂 REJECT THE IDEAS all you want, it would still be a fun experience with you. I absolutely love how much thought you put into the backstory, something that we may barely hear about in the audio, BUT may play a huge role in how YOU portray the speaker character, so even when you don’t speak of it, we WILL hear it in the frustration of speaker in the final delivery. The fact that the idea that came to you “yesterday” is the one that made it to the audio, talk about not going with the first, second, third idea, huh? 👏🏼 “Gazebo sex” is such a wedding idea! Can I just say, the last switch in tone between you (August, the writer) and the speaker character at 46:29 is just too good. I feel so excited hearing your brain at work! I appreciate that sometimes you repeat what listener character says; helps add to the experience in my humble opinion. “You want me to what?” Yeah I agree, obviously, that’s a very “you” line 😂👏🏼 I love the bluff F played where she got him at sword point. 👏🏼 so yes, glad to see that made it! I was gonna ask if you ever work on a script, then sleep on it for a later time to review with fresh eyes, then the video moved to you recording already and making changes so that answered my question. A bit of angst is good; the setup you established for it at the beginning calls for it, AGAIN, another plus to actually jotting down the backstory. The “do you yield?” played beautifully in the audio, btw! Throughout the entirety of it. A small line that has a HUGE impact. The fact that one hour 25 minutes of this amounted to only 5 minutes of the actual audio is mind baffling. The amount of work and dedication you put into this… you’re an absolute gem, and I appreciate you so much. That was so enjoyable! Thank you for being generous as to allow us this script-writing video 😭 TL;DR: getting a sneak-peak into your head feels like such a privilege, how things fit together like puzzle pieces, it’s incredible. I had so much respect for the amount of work you produce already but this just added a ton more respect. I think that would be super fun. As a Huge writing nerd, I was fully enraptured through this entire vidjya 🤓📝 One thing I noticed was the clear sense of motive/“heart” your characters have from the jump which stays constant throughout and makes the story easy to follow. There’s a lot of discourse re: plot driven stories vs character driven stories (I’m a character gal meself) and I think your character-forward approach suits the audio medium really well. Also loved hearing your “dry” reads of the lines as you wrote them! Sometimes I’ll notice certain lines I write look good on paper but sound weird or clunky to the ear and I think speaking them out loud really helps gauge the flow/naturalness of dialogue and usually helps propel the other character’s lines too. I was wondering, do you ever time your script mid-writing? As in, to get a gist of the audio timeline, do you ever do a dry run of an unfinished script, maybe the beginning bits, to gauge how long it is? Or have you written enough scripts atp that you can ballpark how much “air time” 20 lines of dialogue will take? I think pacing is one of your strong suits and I wonder how much intention/preparation goes into that. ALSO that point about spoon-feeding the audience what listener “said” by reiterating their “lines” (ie “You wanna know if I’m ___? Yes, I’m ____”) 🥴 that’s something I’ve noticed lots of other VAs do, a little bit here and there is fine but I really appreciate how you prioritize showing vs telling 🙌🏼 Thanks so much for letting us take a peek behind the curtain, this was super interesting and fun. Also hope your back feels better soon! ❤️🩹

One suggestion is to do it for something lower key than one of your “scheduled” pieces of content (i.e. early access or exclusive)… like maybe as bonus content to celebrate a milestone (you’re getting close to 3k paid members!)? You could do it to create a mini “bonus” audio (like 15 minutes or less)? An additional idea is to give us specific parameters as we collaborate on the stream, like you give us a few options and we riff off them? And/or you have us vote on different tropes/tags/story beats in like a real time poll? I’m imagining you have us start by live voting on a very general dynamic (rough, soft, switch), then you could poll us on the pairing dynamic (F2L, S2L, E2L, etc.), then setting, etc.? I’m envisioning a “moans x August Build An Audio” almost like Mad Libs? haha I think it could be a blast and just silly? Might take some of the pressure off. Hopefully some food for thought! Ultimately though, I deeply respect your preciousness re: your writing, so obviously, would not want you to do this if you felt like it compromised your creative integrity in any way!

It’s now tied with the audio process one as my fave SFW. I am obsessed with any kind of window into artistic processes!!! Like, I miss the pre-streaming days when we purchased movies as physical media on DVDs solely bc the “Bonus Features” would often have a director’s commentary and/or BTS. It was genuinely a treat to be privy to the gears working in your brain as you write an audio. I could have watched hours of this tbh and am feeling so jazzed by this meaty chunk you gave us! Gonna bullet my thoughts: • I was surprised by how surreal it felt to see some script text of “the hits”. I actually screamed when I saw the script for “Spank Therapy” (one of my faves) scroll into view! 🤩 • The 19th C Russian literature dawg in me is delighted that the duel stayed the foundation of the stakes for the audio (ignoring that in RuLit they primarily used pistols bc swords are way cooler and sexier imo and a duel is still a duel!!!) ⚔️🤺 • I was previously unfamiliar with the Pixar concept of not going with your 1st (2nd, 3rd, etc.) idea, BUT in hearing you share it, I thought about how the Beat poet, Allen Ginsberg, has a writing strategy attributed to him that is kind of the antithesis of that: “First thought, best thought”. 💡⚡️The takeaway for me is that the labor of writing is often ultimately playing little mind games with yourself to overcome any “blocks” in idea generation. The “rules” for the games that work best for each of us just may look different? I think I tend to use the Ginsberg strategy to eventually get to the Pixar place? haha like I find committing to anything on the page, even the first “bad” idea, opens the floodgates for the “better” ones to follow. I am such a chronic self-editor though because I love refining/revision, so oftentimes I need to follow a first idea just to get anything done! • I found it so fascinating to hear how you do line reads and consider the “performance” of the SFX as you write! That felt like such a specific insight to the AITW process and how you approach the title of “Creator”. It demonstrated that for you, all the different roles that you have to flex as a VA are pretty fluid and not delineated into, like, “I have my Writer August hat on right now. Time to swap it for Voice Actor August/Sound Designer August/Director August.” Not to gas you up all the damn time (even though you deserve it fr!!), buuuut I think your natural propensity to occupy and apply all those creative perspectives throughout your production of an audio is a huge factor in why your shit is so good consistently - just saying!!! • Finally (I know lol), this may be better suited for your next AMA, but I’m still going to ask because it’s relevant to the topic and I don’t wanna forget it. You touched on this a bit when you mentioned how class play comments on the Tailor audio inspired your second iteration of this audio concept, but I want to ask more specifically: what does your relationship with comments/feedback in your writing process look like? I’m thinking particularly about those comments where we’re like, “More X, please!” and/or “I’d love to see X!”. Do you “track” those requests in any way (even just mentally) and put them in scripts when the time is “right”? Or is it more fluid than that? Based on the Tailor audio thing (plus you opening suggestion threads in the past, and most recently, incorporating @Thelnie’s drive-in idea for the September EA), I assume that you are keen to engage with Patrons’ input on story/script to a certain extent? That said, I also think you’re in a unique situation by having access to a near constant stream of requests and opinions re: your work WHILE you’re in the process of scripting the next piece. When I try to imagine those conditions for my own writing process / how I’d feel, on one hand it sounds energizing (bc isn’t an invested audience what every writer wants to some degree?), but on the other it could be maddeningly overwhelming? TL;DR how do you manage our enthusiastic input (and ✨overactive imaginations✨🤪) with your ultimate vision/agency/goals for your scripts? Okayyyy I will wrap it up! Thank you so much for indulging us with this even though I am sure it created way more work for you to balance the concurrent creation of 2 pieces of content. I thoroughly enjoyed this and will be revisiting it when I need a boost for my own projects! Thanks August! 💌🩵
