Hoppity Shadow Pirates

Dear Insane Children,

First up, a reminder about tomorrow's Livestream on YouTube where special guest Roger L. Jackson (voice of the Cheshire Cat) will join us for a Halloween chat!

Hit THIS LINK to visit YouTube and set a reminder. We're going live at 6PM PST (San Francisco time) on October 31st, (that's Halloween - woooo).

And we're giving away literal FRIKKEN SKULLS for prizes this time around... can't get more spooky than that!

Pirate Jam 2019

Arg, mateys! You'll have noticed the video up-top which is the Pirate Jam 2019 Promo video. We're taking submissions for potential pirates over on the Pirate Jam website. Hit THIS LINK if you want to check it out and sign up.

I kinda feel like the Insane Children aren't all that into Pirate Jam?

Would love to hear feedback from everyone on ways the event might be made more exciting for Insane Children and for normal people who aren't in the asylum.

Have any of you watched the videos from the first two events? Anything stand out as particularly entertaining - or deadly boring? How might we improve what's on offer?

And... how many of you are game developers potentially interested in joining? Are you hesitating to sign up? If so, why? What sort of questions or concerns might you have?

Anyway, I'm excited for the 2019 event. We've got sponsors, ships, and core crew lined up and ready to go! Still plenty to be done on route planning and event setup - but since PJ2019 isn't until April, 2019, we've got time...

Rabbit Update

Omri sent along an updated image for the White Rabbit Plush. He's  included additional details and instructions. And we have 4 (!) factories working on prototypes now, so I expect we'll see some interesting results before too long. I've asked them to split between some factories doing Omri's design (above) and Joey's design (shared in the previous post here on Patreon.

Hey - did you order something from Mysterious in order to get a free Mini White Rabbit? If so, please note that these little guys ship separately from your main order - especially true if you're ordering one of Jennifer's nifty new clothing designs which have recently gone up. So, please refrain from writing to ask where your free rabbit is - he's hopping his way to you all the way from China. Hop, hop! Give him a little time :)

The Shadow Self

And Omri sends along an updated version of the "Shadow Self" image he's working on.

Good timing since a lot of the recent talks I've had with RJ regarding the Alice: Asylum narrative revolve around the concept of the shadow self. We're exploring ideas for how Shadow Alice interacts with "regular" Alice - and how the story of the two characters might intertwine, conflict, and eventually resolve.

RJ is currently playing with ideas related to the narrative perspective on Asylum. He's curious if we might be interested in seeing young Alice's story as told by post-Madness Returns Alice. This idea opened up a can of (good) worms in terms of origin and resolution of Alice's story in general.

We spoke quite a lot regarding prequels - specifically RJ's experience working for Lucas Arts and seeing first hand how the Star Wars franchise was driven into the ground with the "shall not be mentioned" episodes. So, we're definitely avoiding *that* trap (thanks, Admiral Akbar).

I've pasted a collection of notes and outline material into the Asylum Wiki. And the Wiki now has a Comment function which you can use after you create a Wiki account.

Alright - we'll go over more of this stuff on tomorrow's stream! Don't miss it!

And be sure to get your QUESTIONS into the comments below so Font Lord and I can put those in front of Roger!

Love the look of the poster by omri so far. I really like the idea of Alice telling the tale of her past after she's gone through the events of madness Returns.

Understood. I think the mistake was, two weeks ago during the stream Martin mentioned that we should be patient and wait "a couple" more weeks. That kind of set the timeline in my mind. I will absolutely continue to wait. Thanks guys.

SUGGESTION: I think the idea of Shadow Alice has so much potential. It really depends on what function you envision her playing in the game. If she were an end boss this might not work so well, but if you were to collect 'shards' of Alice in some way (AMR had her collecting memories) perhaps collecting enough fills up some kind of counter for a transformation that offers a power up that can be saved and then triggered, say if there's a mess of enemies ahead or in a boss fight. The advantage of this method is that you don't need to risk being low in health tp trigger a boost but you do need to work for it by exploring the map to collect these items.

I love the idea of a post-A:MR Alice relating the story of younger Alice!

truth_decay, when it comes to the chaos coin patience is definitely key. Mine got mailed out on Oct 5th, and then the last tracking update was on Oct 8th. I was almost going to give up hope when on Monday the 29th I FINALLY received a new tracking update (3 weeks later) and the coin should be here on Saturday.

It would be WONDERFUL if everyone could just wait. Literally every time we look up someone's tracking details the Coin is a few days away from delivery. They went out in different batches at different times - so even people living in the same state / area will receive them at different times.

QUESTION: Sorry, but I still haven't received Chaos Coin or last months art print. Is it time to start asking for tracking information, or should I wait another week? I hate to add to the stress of the fond lord.

truth_decay

The art is amazing.

"I just hopped in from China and boy is my fluff tired!"

QUESTION AND SUGGESTION: Will we be seeing Wonderland before it's corrupted or the characters as they first were? If not. I had a idea that when we start the game what if it's very similar to the American Mcgee's Alice, but instead of seeing how the events of the fire take place, it's in Alice sleep where she's enjoying her tea party? Narrative: Alice is enjoying tea with her friends, Hatter, March Hare and Dormouse. All is merry and even Cheshire shows up to watch them enjoy their tea. "I got one! Why is a raven like a writing desk!?" Asks Hatter. Alice, pondering this question doesn't realize that a fire suddenly appears, small and not much of a danger, yet Hatter and March Hare panic. "Oh dear oh dear!" Yells hatter trying to put it out with tea. "We must save Alice!" March Hare exclaims while Alice begins to feel the panic rise in her body. Why did this little fire scare her? She could smell the smoke. "Wake up Alice! Wake up!" Hatter grabs a hold of her when the tea doesn't put out the fire and begins to shake her. Everything suddenly goes dark. (Alice's Iconic scream from when she jumps out the window echos in the darkness) After a few moments we hear the sound of metal, people talking, we see through Alice eyes, it's blurry and the voices are hard to make out but it's definitely a hospital. The eyes repeatedly close and open showing different scenes on what was happening and people trying to communicate with her. Finally she closes her eyes one more time, and the next moment Alice is standing in what appears to be London. (Denial stage.) And so the game begins! (I know I posted this before but I didn't want my question and suggestion to be missed lol)

I can't wait to see how you do this! An older more mature Alice narrating her younger self is perfect!!!! I love this Alice image!

That Shadow Self image reminds me of the Bluebeard one from 'OOTW,' where his beard was twisted into tendrils. It makes me think that the more the player relies on Shadow Alice or follows its direction, maybe the more influence it has on Alice herself, so there might be short periods of time the player loses control, or Alice says something darkly out of character. Just short moments. Nothing like the end of a Genocide Run in 'Undertale.'

SUGGESTION: What if the rabbit plushie could be moduler? Effectively fans would be able to swap out arms or legs or even faceplates to choose how worn it is. Of course, with faceplates you'd have to be able to put the plush surface over top to make it look right, and you'd sacrifice some of the softness, but it might be cool to have it look more or less worn on a given day.

Gosh, this has to be my favorite illustration thus so far!

What if Alice found fragmented memories of her very first visit to Wonderland. So the player would play through demented versions of classic scenes we’d recognize from the original story.

I enjoy watching every single video from Pirate Jam. SUGGESTION: it would be amazing, if there were short videos with developers sharing their personal experience, talking about technologies and trends in game dev in a form of "pirate stories"

The framing device of post-"MR" Alice narrating could be interesting or utterly superfluous; presumably it all depends on how it's handled...what purpose would it have? What insight or depth would we get from it that we wouldn't otherwise? I worry that this might take focus away from the story of Asylum itself because seeing any peek at the events after "MR" will make players more interested in seeing those events play out rather than prequel events where we already know how things end (to an extent). SUGGESTION/DISCUSSION: As for the Shadow Alice art, it looks wonderful but I still think Shadow Alice should not be a red tentacle monster. My first thought when I saw that art was “Oh hey, the Red Queen from Alice 1!”…she just reads as exactly the same character with nothing that makes her appear special, unique, or (perhaps most importantly) new. I worry casual fans are going to look at this enemy and just think that “Asylum” is a remaster of “AMR” or just trodding the same ground again. Unless the idea is to retroactively state that the Red Queen has been Shadow Alice all along (which seems gimmicky), I really think the artists should take a look at some other design aesthetics for Shadow Alice before we go all-in on the tentacles.

I'm in the process of ordering a sweater and maybe socks (haven't decided whether or not to treat myself yet) so I'm hoping i can just buy in time to still get a rabbit! I'm so pumped i took today off of work so i could watch the livestream in full tonight💙

I do like watching pirate jam! The parts I like the most are the developers talking about their ideas and seeing the final results! It's really impressive what people are able to create in such a short time. I would love to join sometime... But, I am still a student, and mostly a programmer, while I feel that for Pirate Jam you have to be able to create everything from scratch (including the design, assets etc). But who knows!! Pirate Jam needs some more ladies after all :)

Good, that Madness Returns was mentioned, because i just start a new playthrough and wonder if it would be possible to re-release Alice 1 and 2 (maybe even with DLC-content so that people dont have to change .ini-files to get the content) to celebrate Alice Asylum (to release all titles on gog.com would be amazing). And as a second point: Would it be possible to announce streams with UTC time too? I think, this would make it easier than Sanfrancisco-timezone to get the right time.

Gregor Hähnel

I think it would be really cool to have post madness returns alice narrate the story. It would be interesting to see how she is doing after her two worlds collided and how that has affected her memories of the past.

I love the shadow picture. And it's a good job you said the rabbits come separately. I ordered a top.
