Oedipal Centimom Nope

Dear Insane Children,

"Kill it. Kill it with fire!" Well, we tried that and this is the result - at least inside Alice's mind. Family and home destroyed in a fire. Alice tortured mercilessly by recurring nightmare fragments of their dying screams. Manifest in Wonderland as insect-like automatons which serve to mechanically probe Alice's psychic wounds ensuring they'll never heal.

During yesterday's livestream it was suggested by one of our Inmates that these contraptions aren't controlled by Alice's family members but are a sort of articulated mobile cage in which they (or Alice's memories of them) are trapped. For someone suffering from PTSD this analogy is apt. Memories of the trauma return at the slightest trigger - as if a mechanical button was pressed. The recurring pain is brought back like a song on a player piano. Once it starts playing it often keeps going to the point of exhaustion, collapse, or breaking.

Some of the most insidious forms of trauma are those which include loved ones whose presence or recollection of now serves as the primary trigger for pain. Containing Alice's family within diabolical mechanical creatures who stalk her through the mental landscape of Wonderland is a perfect analogy for this. The question then becomes... how does one defeat this sort of mental monster?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments below.

And while we're on the topic of centi-nopes...

Crawly, the doll-part centipede, spawned more than just horrified reactions. He (it?) also got me thinking a way in which we might present text, UI, manual, enemy descriptions, and other elements in-game... as if through the lens of 13-year old Alice's way of seeing and labeling these things. Again, this was discussed in some detail during the live stream but the idea is that "Crawly" is exactly the sort of thing a little girl might call this sort of beasty. Another enemy we reviewed is "Itsy Bisty"...

A name inspired by the classic children's nursery rhyme of "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" but misspelled - a misspelling I suggest we hold on to if we decide to go the route of presenting the game's text and other elements through Alice's eyes. How far might we take this idea? Could the game interface break or evolve to reveal new elements as a function of Alice's fear and progress?

Heavy stuff... perhaps it's tea time?

Yes, the Teapot Cannons are back. Joey suggests these are kinder, gentler pre-Madness versions. Not yet clad in metal armor. Compared to those other horrors these two are downright cuddly!

Speaking of cuddly...

Yet another revision on the White Rabbit Plush design. This time Joey's adjusted the proportions a bit more... Skinnier, different leg/arm lengths, etc. What say you, Rabbit Design Council?

At this point I think we'll get this one made as a sample along with the design previously shown. That way we have two to compare side by side. Always a good thing.

Alright, I am prepping for travel... will post another update of story, art, and fun once I'm on the ground in Thailand.

Oedipal Centimom Nope

Comments

Those Teapots are adorable <3 We should make some sort of collectable out of these. Plastic models, patches, etc. Just something! New rabbit design looks perfect to me! It has squashed all the beef I had with it previously. I like the idea of making UI and so forth in the language of 13 year old Alice, if it can be done in a way that still makes it easy to find the menues you're looking for and so on.

SUGGESTION: Since we saw in the stream that a centipede's gather in the center between its coils, what if Centimom spawned add-mobs that she tried to protect from Alice. The more she spawns, the greater her defensive stats, but the more Alice kills the more aggressive Centimom gets toward Alice. To twist things further, what if the add-mobs had fragments of Alice's and Lizzie's faces, so it was like they were being replaced? And the closer the player looks, the faster Alice's Insanity rises.

Awesome 💀🖤

I can already see the entraped mother centipede crawling, and oozing. It's so creepy and I love it!

Jen

The designs for everything are excellent! Especially loving the new design for Alice's rabbit, it looks much less stiff. 🖤🧡

teapots looks nice, but I have so many flashbacks from the AMR I hated them so much when I was playing

Love the tea pots! Then bunny is awesome now! The proportions are much better, and he no longer looks like a 🐶. As for centimom- that’s so messed up. I love it! Same with Crawly. Well done this week! As for the concept of her family trapped in the machines, I say definitely yes. It makes total sense.

Alice killing memories of her family so they cannot hurt her anymore means she doesn't feel any guilt. Otherwise, she'd let the monsters kill her as they seem to be feeding on her and it's a viable way to repair what she's done.

Make Nine Inch Nails great again

SUGGESTION: About the Itsy Bisty: It would be great if we would get a cut scene before we get into the \any boss fight and we would just hear the sound of a spider crawling around in the shadows first-like from behind, above and so on (i hate spiders so it would def. creeps the hell out of me...just to hear the sound first)+a camera turn around Alice who (of course) wanna know what it is were the sound is coming from. The spider thingy could land behind her or something at the end...hope you get the idea XD...that would be cool.

SUGGESTION: What if these "family member monsters" would be like burning doors in Madness Returns? I mean at the end of every level Alice must face one of her family member in a nightmare form.

I move everything about this post. Love that the tea pot cannons are back and the rabbit looks awesome! ❤️

ImprudentBean35

All the enemies are shaping up to be down right terrifying. The bunny on the other hand just adorable, I think the design looks great and would be head over heels for one.

The skinny bunny looks great, I like it better than the other one, but comparison is a good thing! Alice family members or better what's left of them look really creepy. It's so sad, this must cause so much pain! The mini-bosses look good although I'm really not fond of boss fights but I know that I'm the minority on that topic :) I'm curious how we fight them.

The hotpots are so cute! I love them. ❤️

Crawly looks absolutely horrifying *shudder*. Centimom looks really cool. I love the adorable teapot cannons!

Sally

I had presumed that Alice's family members were trapped in those contraptions rather than controlling them, it seems to fit better in the whole theme that way. All of them are hideously creepy so well done! I think I like this rabbit better, the face seems more rabbit like now. Oh and the teapots are great!

Oh my, I am terrified of centipedes. Please keep going haha.

This is a very good idea, hands down. But personally, I still believe that in asylum, Alice must lost everything. Yep, I do comprehend the "plot twist" option, but it feels cheap for me, I would prefer a continuous agony of losing everything piece by piece, no matter the effort.

The rabbit in this post is my favorite! I like the other one but, like this one a lot better. The bugs look great to! But, with my bug phobia i'll be doing a lot of running Haha. I love the teapots and would love figurines of them!!! I loved them the moment i saw them in madness returns and am excited for their reappearance!

I kinda like spiders, but centipedes are a huge nope for me! Also the renewed rabbit looks good!

I'd really love to have Alice pretty much playable as a mermaid in that level. Not just a dress with mermaid elements, but a mermaid tail that flops around as if swimming.

Since there is going to be underwater segment this time where Alice will be swimming, then why not add a few underwater bosses? Also we haven't seen yet I think the mermaid costume for Alice?

I am very excited about all of this. It's amazing, and I don't think that any of these need more improvements. We just need more mini-bosses and more bosses in general.

I love the skinny version. It's closer to original bunny

SpectraShadowsCZ

Such Nightmares to be seen, goodness i'm both excited and unnerved by the awesomeness of the creatures coming forth. I Love Davids Idea ,it'd be such a lovely moment among the chaos and could be more engaging emotionally to the player as a bit of rest from the action. I like the Rabbit with a bit more Dangle to his limbs , also wondering if he will be weighted a little so as to make the limbs fall while held, i understand its not to be like the rabbit held while she awakes in AMA but i was rather fond of that one lol.

Every thing looks pretty good and creepy yay.I like the newer look for the tea and coffee pots.. crawly and Itsy bisty r pure nightmare fuel. -_-, The bunny looked better chubby I think. ^_^ <3

Sobela

I'm loving all of this! All of this content is surpassing my expectations, well done everyone involved! This game is going to be so awesome!

Love the new rabbit design, the teapots, and David's idea! Centimom is suitably creepy AF!! Going off David's idea- from what I have seen and heard regarding girls and their mothers...they want to please their moms/feel like they're good enough. If David's idea is considered, when centimom is defeated- maybe the acceptance for the centimom could be a memory fragment of her mother, or something coming from the centimom directly, about "You've done well, Alice" or "You're a good girl, Alice". Something along those lines could also apply to the Dad. Just a thought if David's idea is considered! Can't wait to see the rabbits for real! Every post gets me so much more excited to dive back into my favorite twisted Wonderland!

I like the longer ears on the rabbit! It looks much more like the first alice rabbit.

One more thought concerning defeating Mamma. Centipedes like dark and damp places. Likewise, the trauma of the loss of her mother resides within the darker recesses of Alice's mind. Perhaps the creatures defeat could be to shine light on it somehow? And then, to go off on David's idea (which is wonderful, btw), finding closure and accepting embrace.

Richanne Matthews

I LOVE LOVE LOVE all of this, especially the rabbit. SUGGESTION: I noticed that Dad's arms were fire, but there's no fire involved with Mom. I had a thought back to the Utica Crib, which was a restraint used in asylums in the mid 1800's. Could she be trapped in a Utica Crib somehow and then exposed to fire? Or whatever works, whether it has to with Mama Centipede or something else. I liked the touch of fire with Dad, though, and I think it would be cool to maintain that theme.

Richanne Matthews

Also as the machines with the family members die they could stsrt to burn. Burning alive her family members all ovet again reliving their screams. But as a bright side what some others mentioned in hugging them freeing them. Naturally as the automation burns they burn. But at the hug theyre healed.

I love the rabbit collectible!! What bout a wine red colour for the inside of ears an paws?

The mother is creepy af. Which is perfect. And you got the human centipede baby doll going on and it’s giving me the creeps! Also perfect for this game. I very much love this rabbit design. I personally like the idea of him having 1 eye. Before the fire he had both but after he lost it and it shows that he’a No ordinary rabbit. What would be kinda cool if he had a burn mark, maybe? I can’t wait til we start for that goal. Hopefully it will be after the holiday season. 💕💕💕

How to defeat the mental mama monster And all her little babies. Funny thing I was playing castlevania on the nintendo 64 and the final boss fight is a huge giant demon half centipede monster with fire and bombs that would go off everywhere. I see she stands up, would be a wonderful time to go in and kill her babies and Centimom could slam her body down to protect her babies ( It could be like a powerful wave to send Alice flying backwards ) maybe killing all her little babies would set her off to go crazy on you and that would make a way to defeat to her. How about she would run all over the fighting grounds slamming into anything that could make her more open for attacks.

I am so excited for this game and geting more excited every time I see something new. Loving the tea pots and the revised rabbit is just the best, I really want one of those.

To address your question around a way to 'defeat' the manifestations of her family it really depends upon the stage of grief in which that they are encountered. A fitting and almost poetic way could be that, when the boss is weakened to a certain level, a quicktime trigger (a la G.O.W R3) would lead to Alice embracing them and saying goodbye. Some token of closure like a hug or even a kiss on the forehead would be both beautiful and emotionally engaging for the player. I guess like i said it would depend when they are faced as it could be considered an act of acceptance. Just a thought.

I'm sure they all will make awesome boss fights.

Lucas Severin

The spider boi is terrifying and looks like a challenge, also the mechanic twisted family members look so cool and really play nicely into the ptsd theme. UwU

For crawly maybe disabaling the legs while it has them it's extremely nimble though, making them hard to hit. But as each leg goes down it becomes slower but its attacks more desperste and dangerous. In the end you have to do something to its head. So maybe it gets a lunge attack with a quick time event. If you get it you can get a few hits in before being thrown off.

Chance Houston

I think it should be called Creepy Crawly as that's what children call bugs often. I really REALLY love those teapots. I'd love to have it as a collectable like the teapot from AMR ❤
