Your Own Worst Enemy

 Dear Insane Children,

Hope everyone had a pleasant weekend. I finally managed to clear the social and work calendar enough that actual *free time* was had and enjoyed. Not that I don't enjoy making BBQ ribs for friends on the weekend but three weekends in a row and it starts to feel a bit like work!

Let's start the week with something entirely cute and not at all horrible - Omri's vision for Alice as her own enemy. She appears in the form a Alice as a 7-year old. Sweet and cuddly enough in her "OFF" state but a demonic, screaming, fire-engulfed ball-and-chain spewing hellion in her "ON" state. Sounds like children in general to me...

Omri says the idea is that she comes from a time in Alice's past when the family was whole and happy. Now that the family is in a pile of sad ashes, Alice's vision of the past turns into a nightmare reminder of her pain. Says Omri, "She'll appear at random out of the shadows. Or, just suddenly, look left! There she is!"

Sounds like a JUMP SCARE to me... Are we doing those?!

I don't mind the occasional jump scare. There's a kinda, "Alright, alright, you got me..." to them which I can accept in small doses. I'd not like to fill the game with them - they'd become tedious and tiring. In fact, this touches on one of the Key Principals I think we ought to flesh out and write down... that being that 'horror of the imagination' is much more horrifying than blood splattered on the screen or a repeated offering of jump-scare-type mechanics.

Where we're going is horrific by its nature. It's a distorted and broken imagination. And it should raise the hairs on the back of the neck to venture into some of the darker places. Alice's reaction to exploration of those spaces will often be enough to set our teeth on edge. We've talked before of having her sing quietly when she's nervous or scared. And we've suggested she might resist player control input at preset moments when the fear just gets to be too much. Subtle forms of feedback like this in combination with art direction, music, and sound design will go a long way towards making us feel creepy-crawly without needing to fall back on jump scares.

And we'll still have the occasional fountain of blood. Don't worry ;)

Chaos Coin Surveys

At last! September 17th is upon us! (At least here in Shanghai). That means Font Lord has spent 17 days working on gathering eligible Patrons into a list in preparation for sending out surveys and the actual Chaos Coin Sets.

Out of 2103 Patrons who qualified (their pledge was $35 or more at end of August) there are 20 still marked as "declined" by their payment processor. Another 20 have not entered their mailing address on Patreon. Those 40 people will NOT get a Chaos Coin until they correct these issues.

Are you among that 20? Well, check your Patreon user info. Is your address in there? Good. You're not in that 20. Now, check your payment system. Do you see a payment processed for Patreon in September (for the August payment) at $35 or more? Great! You're done. If you answered "no" to either of those questions then PM Font Lord here on Patreon and we'll try to get you sorted out.

For those who feel confident they are in the group of eligible Patrons, check your email. You should find an email from Survey Monkey for the Chaos Coin where you'll input your name and message. Details and rules are provided on the Survey Monkey page. Hold onto that link! You can use it to update the info on the Coin at any time in the future (up until we're prepping to ship the game).

Once you've answered that survey you can also safely adjust your pledge as needed. BUT WAIT - do keep in mind that if you stay at the $35 for two more months then you can pick an Art Print from the Mysterious Shop...

That's a small selection of all the prints available to choose from. AND we'll add a few more prints to the list by the time you've stuck around for two more months. We might even add this amazing new beauty from Alex...

Plus, we've got the new Embroidered Patch Set on the way, which you don't want to miss out on! Stay Insane! The Asylum needs you...

Rabbit Design Council Update

Attention RDC Members! Based on your feedback over the weekend Joey's put together a revised version of the White Rabbit Plush. When finished this soft doll will closely resemble the doll carried by Alice in the games - in terms of materials, design, and size.

When providing feedback, please keep in mind we're trying to stay close to the image in the top-left of the concept image below...

Yes, Alice's Rabbit Doll has a funky dog-face. Stop pointing that out - you're hurting his feelings! How'd you like it if everyone went around saying, "Well, he's alright but he looks like a dog..." :P And let's also keep in mind this is meant to be the Rabbit she's carrying in Asylum - when Alice is 13. For that reason it will NOT feature the heavy "repair" stitching seen on the Rabbit in Madness Returns (among other things).

Joey's added red material and adjusted the leg/ear proportions.

What do you think? Feedback in the comments below!

Coin Miscellaneous

As I am writing this update two questions regarding the coin arrived...

First, "will my name become intellectual property?" Your name in the game is like a credit on a film. We don't own it but you are implicitly granting us the right to use it and your message in-game without license, compensation, etc. If you aren't comfortable with this, then don't submit a name or message.

Second, someone asked the presentation format for the name and message in the game. This was something we shared in a previous Patreon post. Scroll back! But to save you time, here's what Alex whipped up for an example of what it might look like...

For now, get your name and message into the Survey Monkey (if you want those things in the game) and sit back and wait for delivery of the physical coin. Mailing of those will start soon BUT we're heading into Mid-Autumn festival here in China so shipping times will be impacted. When your Coin is fulfilled you should receive an email with a tracking link.

If you don't get a tracking link then please wait until October 15th before you write to ask for one.

Whew! That's a ton for today. I'll let you all absorb that and keep an eye on comments for any urgent questions or concerns.

Your Own Worst Enemy

Comments

Personally, I love the idea of the younger alice popping up now and then from the left or whatever, but only enough so it isnt repetitive or annoying. It's been ages since I've played a game with that kind of fear factor even if it's only in the first play through. Also the singing and order refusals sound great.

SUGGESTION: Maybe along with the movement restrictions into dark or burning places (for obvious reasons), the player might be able to force Alice to enter the area above her protests by activating Rage -- however Raging Alice might be more prone to lashing out a nearby enemies, causing her to charge into more trouble than she can handle. Plus Rage only lasts for a limited amount of time, after which Alice would be more vulnerable to attack. If she's still in a dark or burning area when Rage runs out, she might (1) run away, (2) try to hide, or (3) throw a tantrum at the player for putting her in this situation. If forcing Alice to do things against her will with Rage was to become an option, the player would likely wonder if it was worth it... or is using it like being one of the adults who force Alice to do other things she doesn't want to do? Forcing Alice to move and act against her will might thus lead Alice to greater insanity and a darker ending.

SUGGESTION: What about having something like a sanity meter, like in Amnesia the Dark Descent? Whenever she encounters this Alice, her sanity decreases and the singing to herself helps to raise it back up. Maybe when she has low sanity, her attacks do less damage or the view becomes distorted.

Wow....that is creepy.

Kate Tildes

Jump scares really arenโ€™t my cup of tea. Young Alice is perfectly the way she is, gives off enough creepiness as she is!

Alice playing with phone! What a easy prey xD

SpectraShadowsCZ

Little Alice is creepy af! She reminds me of Silent Hill with those chains and fire.

Yayy!! I canโ€™t wait! I got my email and sent it in. Iโ€™m so excited!! Unfortunately I have to lower my payment til after the holiday season...

The "repair" stitching part for the doll makes sense but some kids can be so attached to their toys that sometimes they rip or damage the toy unintentionally so parents or the child try to repair the damage. I love Joey's comment, too <3 I never thought the March hare or the rabbit doll looked like a dog either. 7 year old Alice design is good!

The idea of young Alice reminds me of a really unsettling dream I had once. I opened a closet in the house I grew up in and my younger self was standing against the back of the door with a not quite right/sinister smile. Alice seeing her younger self in a twisted way at unexpected times would really make the game feel ominous so I'm all for it.

I like the design of the young Alice, but I feel at times she should just stand, silently, judging with dark almost hateful eyes to give the impression Alice should feel guilty, perhaps have her occasionally with a badly burnt bloody rabbit? I find an occasional jumpscare to be okay but it can be shrugged off or sometimes ineffective with horror elements, I prefer it to be more an unsettling atmosphere that sends a chill down the spine that stays with you, I feel that has more impact.

I made the mistake of reading the Early Access email at 2:30 am. I was all creeped out and on edge so it took me two hours to fall back asleep! ๐Ÿ˜… I really like the 7 year old demented Alice, and I love a good jump scare, but my preference would be thatโ€™s itโ€™s used in extreme moderation. It would be awesome to have a jump scare, then see her in your peripherals, or see a quick blip of her here and there, all to keep you on edge. And, personally, Iโ€™d love to fight her in a boss battle. ๐Ÿ—ก As for the rabbit. I like it a lot more. And sorry, American, for being judgemental about his dogface. Iโ€™m sure he has a lovely personality. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But, to be completely honest, I still donโ€™t love his design. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ I canโ€™t quite pinpoint what would handle that for me, but I can say that I like the original design, the one heโ€™s modeled after, a lot better when it comes to body shape and proportions. Lastly, I really like the new Cheshire print. Now Iโ€™m really considering staying at $35.

That Alice demon is just...wow SUGGESTION: instead of her standing up close maybe she could be off in the distance watching you silently. Or you could have it so she appears in a certain area not necessarily where the player is looking and after a while she disappears so you could catch her out of the corner of your eye, making it seem like you are being followed. And I'm loving these posters Alex is making That's all from me See you at stream

I LOVE the Alice 7yo! She is so creepy, I LOVE it!!! I love the idea of jump scares and Alice singing to herself and not obeying controls, this game is going to be so much fun! ๐Ÿ˜ The rabbit looks even better than it did before. The Cheshire cat artwork is amazing!

Suggestion: Jump scares have their place, and if you have a particularly well crafted ramping up of tension and unease and drop one it can work really nicely as both the "a ha ya got me" and also " oh god I need to take a moment". I would love to see a combination of the 7yo Alice as just a pop but not danger, and others turn into the twisted version and pursue the player. Did i mention an area of a level being full of scattered broken and weathered dolls, many of that 7yo scattered amongst them? oh the fun in not knowing which is a real threat.... Suggestion: I don't like the idea of having the player lose control of the character unless it is deliberately a cutscene or cinematic. One: players will get frustrated when it triggers at certain moments where they JUST found a safe place to hide and then it triggers, throwing off what they wanted to do. TWO: having the lack of control lead to damage or death. What may also be possible is during those particularly scary moments where you want her to be borderline terrified, have a button press or combination to "sing" to herself to calm. It can force her to stand still, or walk fairly slow. If the player doesn't do this her vision gets distorted or broken and at the peak the visuals are so bad you can barely see...flare the lighting and use that as a way to LOAD/transition her to a random spot on the level she has already traversed. It means losing ground as a penalty, and possibly whatever she is collecting. If you build a lot of "one way" spots where once you traverse,. it crumbles of whatever, this would be tricky. Suggestion: for one of Alice's later forms, or close to the end, would it be possibly to merge her 7yo evil self with her current state? As a way of accepting her younger side, and using that for strength through the worlds, it would be pretty kool. And effectively you could have dripping chains coming out of her mouth to her hand, where she swings a similar ball'n'chain weapon at enemies. Longer reach, different attack styles, and fun with some physiques of the chain ...plus a gruesome look having it come from her open smiling mouth. Would also be a crazy unlockable for NG+

Sterling Treadwell

That Cheshire poster is amazing! Totally love it. Young Alice is a creepy little girl isn't she and someone's suggestion of brief glimpses in mirrors is truly terrifying. Jump scares get old quickly but the occasional one is good

Boy she is creepy in her 7 year old form, even before she is using her power. It does say she shouldn't look human or like a doll so maybe that's why something about her seems odd. Also, who doesn't want a blood fountain or two in every game? Love the new Cheshire poster, absolute perfection. The bunny update looks even better than the first draft, I think Joey got it perfect this time.

SUGGESTION: I was thinking, maybe a fear bar, when she's too injured. Alice resists to the controller depending on how filled up it is? I don't know if this would conflict with the power ups, but it's a really raw idea. When I was playing AMR, even after using hysteria mode I was in a lot of trouble, so the fear bar could come after the power up mode if she's still really hurt and there are enemies nearby? She would avoid encounter with enemies, but that doesn't mean they can't find her.

Priscila Nosoma

ALSO, I didn't get the survey monkey email, and I'm sure there's nothing wrong with my address or my pledge.

Priscila Nosoma

I love Omris' illustration of an even younger Alice. Once again, whatever he's selling with this, I'm buying it. Initially didn't see where this 7 year old Alice would fit in, since I pictured to Dark Alice to be either the same age or appear older than Alice herself. But a younger and more innocent looking "Dark Alice" may help to emphasize the contrast in her character, she's tormenting our Alice with the guilt of what happens and words of "Why did you do this to us, Alice?". The twins in The Shinning comes to mind here, for some reason. Overall not a fan of jump scares. One or two may get a point across, but to many is just.. No. It'll make you stay guarded towards the game, rather than being open to the story and experience. And I 100% agree! <3 It is already scary and dark, it needs more guidance rather than forcing it to be dark and scary. The rabbit is better, but still needs a bit of tweaking, in my opinion. SUGGESTION (to the RDC) The limbs still need to be slimmed down a bit. The leg part needs to be slimmer, but the foot remain the same size. Same thing goes for the arms and "hands". The limbs are generally a lot thinner where they are attached to the torso. That could also be something that happens over time, and the almost new rabbit is a bit plumb. SUGGESTION: I really like the idea of Alice resisting the player. Maybe she does this, when the player tries to go some where, where she doesn't have the skills/dress/etc to go yet? I remember there being some talk of some back tracking elements and general replay value, which this could add to.

QUESTION: Do we REALLY need to send our coin messages now? Maybe we could postpone this part a bir further? Because, since we're still in the concept art part of the game, I thought we'd have a lot more time to think about our messages, so I still didn't planned anything.

Priscila Nosoma

My 1st thought to 7yo Alice was HOLY FUCK! And then I felt really unsettled, so great job! As for the jump scare, MAYBE just one when she first appears. But I liked Quinchila's idea way more, and someone said something about seeing her in a mirror, but then you look again and she's gone. Also the idea of she resisting to the controls when she gets to scared is a must for me, along with the singing. That Cheshire poster made me gasp, I NEED IT! And I'm happy with the rabbit now, definitely in the right direction there.

Priscila Nosoma

I love this idea way more than a jump scare.

Priscila Nosoma

what happens if i write "solve et coagula" in the chaos coin? is it also translated? xdd the name and the message will appear in the both physical and virtual coins? thx

Subtle, in the corner of your eye or the "wait, did I just see that", jump scares are way better than in-your-face jump scares!

Quinchilla

Please create a deck of playing cards with these amazing black, white & red images!!!

SUGGESTION: Encroaching Insanity As Scott Cawthon, creator of the 'Five Nights at Freddy's' franchise, said, what is seen in shadows by the eyes of children is often misunderstood. So what if, the longer Alice looked at the monsters based on her family and herself, the more she was driven insane by her guilt or the concept of the stage she was in? The more insane Alice would get, the more she might hallucinate things that are worse than what was actually there, or even things that aren't there at all, and since Wonderland is shaped by Alice's mind, these things would, in time, become real to her and be able to harm her, perhaps. So maybe the hallucinations would start appearing only in the shadows at the edge of Alice's vision, but as things got crazier for her, they would slowly slink out and try to ambush her, so the player would have to defend her from these psychic attacks and try to level out her sanity to prevent further attacks. Perhaps sanity could be restored by looking at cute or light things, or perhaps Alice would hide from the scary things behind the abilities of certain dresses -- armouring herself up against her fears. 'TJOC: R' is a FNAF fangame with a well-designed sanity meter in its first story stage: the more you look at the animatronics, the more insane the child Michael gets, so the shakier and more black and white his vision gets -- only you have to look out for the animatronics to beat them, so you can't just look away. The meter itself is a colour coded panel mounted to one of the bedroom walls. Perhaps because of the things in shadows Alice would be too afraid to go into dark, shadowy places without the right weapons or dress ability, so she would tell the player "no, not yet." Maybe, similar to 'Dust: An Elysian Tail,' the player and Alice could return to a partially-explored stage to unlock certain areas of it which were inaccessible before without a certain dress and its movement-related abilities. Returning to a stage might also indicate a relapse due to trauma, or the increased insanity. And maybe increased insanity would cause Alice's weapons, or even her dresses, to shift chaotically if increased too much.

SUGGESTION: Young Alice Enemy The 'chained down in the flames of guilt' idea works well. What about adding a tiny hint of Bumby's misdeeds, since Alice knows about them, but has suppressed the memories. Maybe one of Young Alice's fingers could turn into a knife, or maybe a higher-level version could have a whip-sword like tongue, depicting a snake-like backstabbing plot. But even if Young Alice said anything, she wouldn't mention Bumby, she would maybe just shout "YOUR FAULT!" over and over again.

That young Alice enemy is already quite unsettling to look at, so job well done with that. I'll add my voice to those who aren't a fan of jump scares...but so long as they're used very sparingly they can add a dash of flavor to the stew of dread and unease the rest of the game should be.

Not a fan of jump scares but the design of enemy Alice is sooo creepy and I love it!

I LOVE the little Alice with the fire and chains - that is a brilliant concept! Having herself as her worst enemy! The art of chesire is AWESOME! I really like the style of him and the white rabbit art! Absolutely brilliant work! And the rabbit doll looks pretty darn cool now! The changes really have made it come together well :D (Message to the rabbit doll itself: Who's a good little bunny - YOU are!! Yes! You aaaare! Such a good bunny-rabbit!)

SUGGESTION : In the "on" version of the young Alice, I imagine her skin more crackled and textured "like an old picture". And maybe a bit more of sepia tones for both.

Well everything seems fine. Day after I pledged I received a notification it was successful, before pledging I set up the address and payment methods, and received the survey. Good luck to everybody! And keep up the amazing work!

LOVE the concept of younger Alice. The occasional jump scare-emphasis on "occasional"- is perfect, and I'm looking forward to what's in store for that. As for the rabbit, I love it! Although, I'm not sure how the pink part of the face will look when it's a physical plush. I have a feeling it won't deliver the same way it does in the concept art.

Richanne Matthews

I really like the updated version of white rabbit!!! It kind of reminds me of this bunny plush I had as a kid lol I couldnโ€™t sleep without it. I canโ€™t wait for the actual plush!!

Cherrie Wu

That 7 year old alice looks amazing, instantly fell in love with the design and gave me the instant creeps! Can't wait to see more about what she will do.

I love the idea of Alice being her own worst enemy and Omri's design is awesome!!! But please, please don't go the route of jump scares around every corner - it doesn't sound like you would do that but still no, no, no. I like the idea of the Alice reacting and trying to break the gamer's control with some well placed resistance. And having Alice sing to herself or even talk to herself is a great idea - adds to the creepiness but is also realistic (who hasn't talked to themselves to get through tough situation?) RABBIT SUGGESTION/OPINION: I liked the design from the September 14th post better as it is more how I imagined the White Rabbit would look. My main complaint about the new design is the red/pink patch of fabric on the White Rabbit's head - it looks really weird. Why is part of his head pink/red?

Ahhh! Creative ways of punishing the naughty. I love it. Also, she can whisper "I know what you did" to the player while she slashes him!

As long as you're not one of the 40 lost children, I guess that's fine. (Check your "billing history" on Patreon.)

Make Nine Inch Nails great again

I love the alices, omg yes to the Chesh Bigger fan of the bunny now. Could imagine that to be something a little Alice reaches for in a shop window... QUESTION: Chaos coin email/survey = ability to change pledge level safely, right?

Sarah Heist

I see your suggestion and support something to this effect. I believe the creepy level is not a problem. If you find it creepy well it's doing its job then. Introducing it would still give that "Oh god!" Reaction without a jump scare. It's about time this series has a reason to be rated M like the old M rated days.

Love this idea! (As long as there is NEVER a cheat guide as to where they are.)

OMG Nightmare fuel. I LOVE IT!!! ๐Ÿ˜

I don't like that AT ALL...... it's a bit *too* creepy :op

Catheryn Alice North

I'd love to see a moment where you pass by a mirror and it's 7yo Alice until you look again and it's regular Alice again. Would be fun seeing her just sprinkled around for you to find.

V--R

SUGGESTION: Publish responses to the Chaos Coin survey on the Wiki for mutual inspiration and to let people make sure their message is truly unique (if that's what they want).

Make Nine Inch Nails great again

I like the idea of little "jumpscares" from young Alice, you look around and suddenly, young Alice! Would be amazing, plus the idea with control resistent when she's in fear sounds awesome!

St. Thomas

My first thought upon opening this email was "dang, Alice, do you have to beat yourself twice?". This is a really cool idea and contribution to Alice's inner blame and self-loathing next to the Queen being equally her counterpart. It does remind me off-handedly of the pair of twin children ghosts in "Fatal Frame 2" and I like it. I love the idea of something cute belaying a real threat. Though, instead of a jumpscare, maybe go Hereditary's route with shadow play! If you haven't seen it, please do.

I love the Cheshire cat picture. I want it

The evil Alice is AMAZING!! I want more stuff like this!! Jumpscares are good at a minimum but I would be scared to see her appear lol SUGGESTION: The Red Queen would be really cool if she looked like Alice's mom and maybe she could be like a chess piece but her body breaks into praying mantis pieces and she is a giant red mantis lady ๐Ÿ’™ maybe her defeat is they way the Queen of hearts merges with her?????

Wow I love the little Alice as an enemy! It's a great idea! Maybe have the sound of clincking chains to alert the player to her presence? And that would make Alice more nervous because of her guilt of surviving? Maybe little Alice won't attack each time if big Alice isn't nervous enough? That would be interesting as the player wouldn't know when to expect her to attack, and she would just fade back in the shadows... I don't know if it's possible or not though! ๐Ÿ˜… I love the bunny he looks awesome! Will we be able to order him as a collectable?

Oh my goodness, demon Alice is hard for me to look at and i love it. Kind of like the wendigo's in until dawn. Hard to look at but sooo good. The rabit with the pink (?) patch looks great and the proportions are better. Oh this just gives me all those good goosebumps!

RozaMay

SUGGESTION: if somebody is pirating the game have the demonic 7 year Alice spawn in and kill the player immediately, and she's Invincible to all damage in a pirated copy. Didn't I say something like this before? I'm sure it's not that important. I'm still trying to think of what I want to write on my coin though.

Lucas Severin

I would literally kill...for an art print reproduction of that one Card Guard print that sold a long time ago on the Alice Store from the last game...If I remember right it went for well over $4k? That picture was completely amazing...I did buy several of the other smaller prints the last time and STILL have them on display...but , have never forgotten that skeletal card guard image with its heart rotted out!

Good catch! โœŒ๏ธ

Alex Crowley

The ideas of Alice unnervingly singing to herself and limiting control when she is truly scared are perfect! Also utilizing the speakers in PS4 controllers would be amazing but probably not desireable from a dev perspective due to it being for only one of the consoles. Would still be great though if possible.

I love the cheshire cat card!! But I noticed I can't find the chaos symbol that's hidden in every one. where is it I wonder?

Definitely not a fan of jump scares, and I agree that the horror should be more subtle than that. Perhaps this transformation should happen right in front of us, with accompanying/preceding dialogue that makes it seem inevitable? That way, we still have the "oh, young Alice is now an enemy" without the "bring me my brown pants".

Rosuav

With the young Alice, since it sounds like the same entity appearing every time. Each time she dispels for a brief second she turns not monster. But Alice after the accident, so first her burnt crying self holding a rabbit. then her slowly becoming more sad looking. Bandages a shaved head a straight jacket.

Chance Houston

I love the thought of a young Alice enemy. And I adore the rabbit way more! But I do indeed miss the vest it once had

I love the added color. Looks perfect to me :) The rabbit looks amazing!!

I love the added color to the rabbit design. Keep up the good work
