Mise en Scène (costumes, music, color, and props...)

Dear Insane Children,

It's Monday in Shanghai and I'm once again down the rabbit hole (in the underground lair) chipping away at Mysterious work. In the background I have "Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi - The Four Seasons" playing. The original violin concerti is one of my favorite things to play while out sailing and hearing certain passages instantly transports me back to the sea. Richter's re-composition of the work is... magical.

Speaking of magic we have an art drop from Joey...

She wrote this morning to let me know they got VPN working up in Tianjing and so she can now watch (and join!) the live streams over on YouTube. In case you missed it, we had a stream last week in which we reviewed all of Alice's new dresses. You can check that out HERE.

Joey says she realizes now that you all might enjoy seeing her work-in-progress sketches. So she's updated the main image you see at the top of this post - to (per your feedback) turn the Pelican into a Dodo. And she's shared a couple of the sketches which map out her progress towards the final image.

If these sorts of progress images are of interest let us know in the comments below. I'll ask Joey, Omri, Alex, and the other artists to share these as they go along. Lots of great content for an art book!

Joey also sends along a collection of previously delivered images arranged in an overall color palette for the game...

Meanwhile Yan was busy over the weekend working on some ideas for new wallets incorporating the embroidered patches...

Curious to know how many of you might be interested in a collection like this. Feel free to let us know in the comments below! And if you missed your chance at grabbing the patches via Patreon (or just want more - who could blame you?) - they are still available over at Mysterious (while supplies last). Grab them HERE

Last little bits...

Now... I have to put a bunch of posters in tubes! These things don't sign and ship themselves!

From Shanghai with Lulu,

-American

PS: For those interested in the dresses here's the entire lineup thus far. More on the way! Thanks, Omri!

SUGGESTION: Denial Dress Passive - secondary activated vision like Shrink Mode in AMR. Active - On activation, can block a single attack or change state (ie: poison). Drawbacks - Cannot see 'real' world while using Denial Vision. Damage is doubled when taken from behind even in Active Mode, which has a 5 second cooldown as well. Fire Dress Passive - Burn damage to enemies and environs that are close by. Alice has burning protection. Active: Increases attack damage and does DoT for a short time. Can be explosive if charged. Drawbacks: The burning. Also Alice's PTSD, etc. so it takes a long time for her to be able to use it, and she cannot use it for long until she conquers her fear of fire and some of her guilt. The better her mental state, the longer she can us it, yet she cannot be 'cured' in this game... Normal Dress Passive - increases all stats (empowerment). Active - short bursts of speed or strength. Drawbacks - short cooldown between bursts, but nothing unusual as this is the default dress. Maybe she can get it after the Circus Dress as a result of winning free of the Tweedles.

Oof those dresses are absolutely gorgeous and so intricate! I really hope we get another "the art of" book for this game!

I love these outfits! I'm also enjoying that one of Alice enjoying a cup of tea- while looking quite haunted- amid the Wonderland characters

Wow, all the outfits are divine, I'm in love with the Black Dress.

Wow awesome 💀🔪

I'm on live also! 😁😁 I believe that the outfit with the flames would make an amazing chaos outfit

Love the art from Joey as usual, would love to see the Alice & friends one as a print! I agree with many people above that the elaborate hairdos (Chaos and Blackening) are a bit too much and don't seem very fitting - they're like something off a NYFW runway and not a 13-year old girl's imagination. I'm not opposed to having different hairstyles necessarily, but I think it would be more consistent if it were more childlike and whimsical (e.g. large braids, plastic barrettes). The dresses are also a bit high fashion for a child, but I like them for demonstrating the quality that graphics have improved since Alice 1 and 2 (which also have a big jump in between). Also a less popular opinion: I don't like the hair of the Inferno dress because it screams electricity to me rather than fire, and reminds me of Storm from X-Men. I'd like it better if it were more orange/red in color, and with black/smoky bits at the edges, and also more of a nebulous fire shape than with visible strands of hair. I'm probably fighting against the tide here, though. Finally, regarding the wallets: I love the pop of color that the patches add, but I think they would look more polished/exclusive if a metal frame around the patch or some other hardware features were added. At the very least embossing (you might have planned that already). Otherwise cheap and impatient people like me would just go ahead and sew our patches on wallets we already own :P

The Inferno dress is by far my fav! I love the design for Chaos dress as well but feel as if Alice's facial appearance should reflect the half and half look that the dress has. The idea of seeing the progression from start to finish for the art pieces would be great!

I'm in love with the denial dress!! Beautiful concept and I love the gruesome difference between front and back

And I'm saying this separate because I really want you to see. The type of thing that I would go crazy for and definitely would pay a lot of money it's THAT UMBRELLA FROM THE ENTERING PLAYGROUND ART. I'm still in love with the A:MR shield umbrella and it would be a dream to have one. Think about it, please! 🙏

It's so nice to see that our opinions are really taken in consideration. The Dodo is proof and he fits a lot better in the picture. Next month art print? On the dresses: I'm not digging the hair styles. I think the hair should be consistent regardless the outfit (except the power up one). Denial is perfect, including the hair and the face. Blackening is gorgeous, but I'd loose the skeleton gloves and the long sleeves, they're a bit too much. Maybe shorter ruffled sleeves with long over-the-elbow black gloves? And the hair, specially the bangs and makeup make her look older than she is. Changing the hair accessory is better in my opinion rather than changing the whole hair. Someone said the chaos dress looks like a girl in a ball got covered in paint and that's exactly how it feels to me. I like it, but it doesn't suit the theme in my opinion. Maybe for the fire dress she could have some smouldering smoke on the skirt, moths instead of butterflies and a glowing vorpal blade that leaves a trail of light? The original the only thing I don't like it's the higher waist. The denial color pallette is my favorite, but they are all so well placed and gave me an internal struggle on which art print choose when I'm eligible for one. And finally, about the wallet I don't know, the idea is nice but it's not something that I would pay or be excited for. Finger crossed on EA. I'm really nervous about it. Hope it all goes well.

The denial dress has to be my favorite so far! I feel like some of the other dresses' silhouettes are a bit more mature/ older looking . They don't have a stand out features like the poofy sleeves, petticoat-ed skirt, or big bow in the back to make her figure look as young. That doesn't have to be a bad thing though. Maybe she wants to appear older and is playing "dress up" for some reason. Or maybe I'm the only one that thinks this lol. I'm behind on this because I caught up with the last live stream recently, but I wanted to mention something about the tarot card designs. My sister reads cards for a living (mainly tarot cards) so I know they are usually jam packed with symbolism. She's mentioned to me a few times after a buying a new deck that she's disappointed when the cards don't have all the details. I remember when she was first learning she would say this is because likes to read off the symbolism rather than just memory. Now she prefers it because when she's giving a reading she'll often point to things happening in the picture to help explain something from that person's life. For example, "The Tower" card usually has a damaged tower in the center that is on fire. Lightning is hitting the tower and people falling out headfirst. There's other stuff on that card too, but the main theme of the card is destruction, where the Jaberwock's tower is unharmed. I'm not into tarot cards myself (got my tower info from google lol) so I don't really care. I think an Alice deck would be cool regardless and I know it's just merch, but I just wanted you guys to know early the deck might not appealing to some tarot readers. Sorry if anything I said was mentioned already.

Like the art. Yes. I'd like to see an Alchemy Wallet 2.0 since the original sold out. Albeit only bi-fold and no snap-lock buttons. Yes yes, please.

Just wanted to say thank you for introducing me to Max Richter's Vivaldi - stunning

Also I love the concept of the Chaos dress but my goodness the blues and greens are so repulsive. Omri is clearly a very talented artist but I hope the Chaos dress concept design gets updated in the future with a simpler look.

I think it’s also worth mentioning that the Blackening Dress would be much prettier if it were shorter. Because the dress grows longer on the sides forming a crescent moon-like shape, shortening it would not only make it more convenient for Alice to move in but also distinguish it as an exploration/fighting dress.

I absolutely love all of this!!! I have a question, though, I was one of the Patrons who was supposed to receive the patches in the mail, and haven't received them yet. I'm not sure if they're still shipping or if mine got lost in the mail, but I'm really looking forward to getting them.

Loved this artwork from Joey as soon as I seen it on the livestream! ♥ And I would LOVE love seeing work-in-progress shots from the artists as they work on the illustrations! As an artist, it's always a treat to get insight into how gorgeous artworks like these were made. And I really hope Joey's artwork becomes one of the patreon prints!

I thought the bandages represented her suffering burns in the house fire.

Wow I really love all those dresses.

I think that guilt was actually a really good name for that inferno dress. If you feel guilty, you feel responsible. And if Alice feels responsible for the death of her family, then she probably feels like a terrible monster causing destruction and death everywhere she goes (especially symbolized by the trail of fire behind her). I also really like the chaos dress. It's a great concept, however I don't think the white (mummified) aspect really fits. It seems to signify decay. It's a great idea on its own, but maybe not with chaos. I think the colorful splattered and stained paint should be played up much more. Maybe even clownish. The best part of the dress is BY FAR the tights. They're AMAZING. And I don't get Padmé vibes from her hair (well, not until American brought it up. Lol) I think the hair is very regal and royal looking. But maybe, to fit more with chaos, the hair can be a bit messy? But I do like the idea of that royal hairdo with the clownish outfit. Such a genius artist!!! 💙💛💚💜❤💖

Oh maaan those dresses get me so excited. They are so exquisite. I'm looking forward to seeing the way they flow in game. Such gorgeous designs. Joey's art piece is quite nice. I regret not doing the 3 for 1 deal. I want this so bad.

The dresses are amazing ! The only one I would change is the Chaos one, I would remove the blue and the green, because they don't seem to fit. Maybe a different hairstyle too. I'm in love with the Denial and Inferno ones.

Joey's art is amazing! Is this going to be next months print maybe?!🤞🤞

I love Joey’s art! I wonder if she has accounts on chinese social media sites, if she couldn’t access English ones because of the firewall before? I’d love to follow her!

Cherrie Wu

I very much like it when you post the artist comments to the images and the different stages each image goes through. I remember Omri once posted a video of how he made his Harley Quinn Boy image and it was really cool to see the artist at work like that (+ really inspiring how much you can do, even with limited means). The design of the patches is so awesome I would definitely like to see them used on other things! Maybe Lulu could sign some of the posters for/with you? Just dip her paws in ink and step on the posters ;D

I want the coin purse! So excited about the dresses, they all look amazing, but I have to agree with some of the comments that the Chaos dress doesn’t feel the same as the other ones. But it might be the hair that confuses me.

Love the art in progress, definitely interesting to see the process you guys go through from sketch to amazing art. I love the outfits, the chaos dress needs to make an appearance in my wardrobe! Good luck with EA, they should be blown away or there is something wrong with them

The dress designs are absolutely gorgeous. Perfect even. The Chaos dress does stand out in comparison to the rest, but I actually think it’s very fitting. Especially with seeing that it is related to the Queen of Hearts/Sun. It’s very much something I’d imagine QoH wearing. So Alice wearing a resembling piece is perfect! The hairstyle sets it up amazingly. The splash of colors actually make me think of the art piece pictured above with the multi colored koi fish flying through Library. I’d be super excited to cosplay any of these dresses and designs. I do have a question concerning dresses, and this may be thinking too far ahead, but I’ll ask anyways. Is there intentions to provide Alice with a different dress per level/area visited? If so, any chance for extra dress (such as DLC like provided in A:MR). Sorry if it’s too early to say. It’s definitely something I am curious about though. A suggestion I’d like to make with the original dress is concerning the symbols in the pockets. In the remastered AMA and as well as AMR it’s the Jupiter and Eris symbols. So it only makes sense to keep those as they are unless there is another purpose for switching them out. The palette for each art piece are very well done and beautiful. Honestly, the art made for Alice is probably my favorite besides the games themselves. On to the wallets. The idea is cute and I’d happily buy one if they were made or make them myself with the patches. Though, with what is pictured above, I’m really only feeling the smaller wallet with the omega symbol. There’s nothing awful with the other two. The other patches just look out of place on the other wallets. Anyways, best of luck with EA. Fingers crossed that all goes well!

Tori

Everything is looking awesome! I love seeing the different stages of a drawing from start to finish. I would also love to see her do a speed paint video of coloring or sketching/outlining a drawing for the game. How long does it usually take to hear back from a company regarding presentations? (I know each company will be different but, wanted to hear your experiences on it). Once Alice Asylum is out, do you think they will be interested in letting you guys doing a remake of the first game?

Tawni Meyer

I always enjoy watching the progress of something, so yes, I'd love to see the sketching progress of all the artists as well <3 And I absolutely love all the dresses so far!! But I agree that I would like to See a different hairdo on the chaos dress.

Big thanks for the Richter link. I've been meaning to listen to that for some time. So far, my favourite dress has been Chaos, because I dig the unexpected, although the hair and head are not right (I would expect her hair to be a little less coiffured for chaos). Hail Eris!

My patches arrived today, thank you! Been enjoying watching the live streams and seeing all the beautiful artwork. The Backyard from Depression is my favorite of the scenes posted above, that tree is amazing. Thank you for including us in the journey!

I gotta agree, I made a post similar to this. I like the dress but it just feels more like a girl at a ball got covered in paint rather than 'chaos.

Fingers crossed!! Yay financers!! Also of all the dresses Chaos dress is still my favorite I think the change is good because Alice isn't sure who she is yet! It needs work but I still love it tho! 💗 I think this exploration is good let Alice play dress up till she ultimately finds herself and her silhouette in the end. Can't wait to hear the story outline and I would love to see in progress stuff like Joey sent! 💗 so excited for the next live!💗

Thx for the art in progress. It is always a great thing to see how the magic happens. I have no doubts the propasal to EA will be successful. I'm afraid I don't understand the "patches to wallets" concept. Will the patch be attached as an emblem to the front leather surface of the wallet? Will the patches still be embroidered or made of leather as well?

Agent. 😉

YEEESSS Lets push the hell out of that aesthetic! Who says a kid can't dress like a miniature bad ^ss? Hello, Hit Girl??

The art looks AMAZING! 😃👍

Fantastic as the art is, I have mixed feelings on the dresses. Original and Denial dresses are perfect as is. Inferno looked a lot better without the shoulders on fire. The bangs on Blackening make it no longer look like Alice, and the “veils” on her upper arms and the skeleton gloves are a bit much. As for Chaos, I think it’s a total mess and it doesn’t feel like it fits with the world’s aesthetic at all. In “A:MR” all the varied dresses kept Alice’s hair long as a consistent design element; maybe this game should follow a similar unifying concept like that as well?

Gorgeous piece of artwork. Love that the Dodo bird was included.

Such amazing art and so inspirational. Makes me so excited and restless for more <3 super loving the Chaos dress

Joey's updates really are my favorite, there is just something about her style of artwork that fits Alice's world so well to me.

I absolutely love the art drop! Does Alice's neck look abnormally long to anyone else? The Inferno dress is my favorite so far. Such a contrast between the dark and bright, its a stunning visual for sure! Cant wait for more!

I am loving all of the progression of the art. It is absolutely gorgeous and I would kill for that photo of Alice being surrounded by everyone as one of the poster prints for the monthly print. I am even more excited with seeing what the different parts of Wonderland will be like with Alice going through the stages of grief. The dresses are gorgeous and my favorite is still the yellow dress from the original Tenniel illustration. Keep it up, guys. You're doing great.

Crossing fingers!

Chaussette

YAY more art! Seeing the process of the art grow from sketches to what we have now would be interesting to see. Also art book confirmed? Not sure how the playground fits in with bargaining though. Hope EA goes well, fingers crossed. See you at stream

Those stages are insane! I'm completely awe struck by how beautiful they are and how well they all fit the respective theme! I'm extra excited for Anger, Bargaining, and Depression. And those dresses still kill me every time I see them. The only one I dont love is chaos dress. There is something I'm not enjoying about the white part and the greens and blues on the skirt. 🤔

Destiny Jenson

I love Joey's new artwork! But I have to say I really dislike the Chaos dress, it doesn't really suit the game and American McGee's Alice in my opinion. Also the chaos theme doesn't really come across, it just looks messed up again my opinion. I'm sorry Omri, but I love the rest of the dresses. Good luck for EA! Fingers are crossed!

I absolutely love the levels and color schemes for each stage of grief! Best of luck with EA!

I have a question for Omri regarding the darkening dress for cosplay purposes, are the tips of the shoes coming up into a curve in a sort of crescent shape or am I seeing it wrong and they're rounded like normal shoes?
