Turtles and Rabbits, Oh My!
Added 2018-03-21 02:12:03 +0000 UTC
Dear Insane Children,
Back today with a couple of beautiful images from Joey to share. These are refined versions of the images we previously shared. A lot of great detail emerging in both...
One of the things I really like about developing inside Wonderland is the malleability of scale. Alice can shrink and grow and the world is occupied by creatures who are often too big or too small relative to the world around them. A 50-foot tall Mock Turtle? I'd shell out for that.

We all know what happens when you follow the White Rabbit... but we'll have to wait and find out what happens when you chase the Glowing Golden Bunny. 兔 兔 strange!
With only 10 days remaining until the end of the month I wonder how our goal of 1000 Patrons will turn out... if it arrives before the end of the month then that's it - all current Patrons for the month (at $5 or more) will receive the collection of Alice Inspired Patches. If we fall short... then that provides another month for new Patrons to arrive and join in the fun. What do you think? Will we hit our goal before April 1st?
Several new Patrons have asked about the Inmate Certificate. They'd like to grab one of their own but weren't in the Asylum when the 555 Goal was reached. Unfortunately, I can't hand out more of those (or sell them separately) since they were offered as an exclusive reward for those who were here within the time limits of the reward. Sorry about that - but fret not! There will be plenty more interesting Goals and Rewards on offer.
Speaking of which... Up next we'll likely do enamel pins since so many have been asking for those. Do you have other ideas for Rewards? Let me know in the comments below.
A lot of excitement building for tomorrow's Live Stream of "American McGee's Alice" as played by yours truly. I just hope I don't suck! Just doing a quick test-run brought back a flood of memories. It'll be interesting to have you all along for this floaty, stabby journey down memory lane.

I think an interesting level concept, or at least something to incorporate into a level, would be the scene from the around the beginning of Through the Looking-Glass where Alice is walking through the garden attempting to reach her house (which is far off in the distance), but it doesn't seem to get any closer. I've been told it could fit into Bargaining or Depression (most likely Depression, where Alice is trying to reach happiness but just can't).
Related to this is the idea of incorporating the garden scene - I did research and found an ancient Roman festival to commemorate the dead (called Rosalia), where roses and lavenders together represent blood, death, and burial.
On top of that, given that we know Alice has read of Herny Walter Bates' voyage through the Amazon, mimicry would be cool to use. Batesian mimicry is, basically, where a non-toxic animal mimics the appearance of a toxic animal to avoid being eaten. A case of reverse Batesian mimicry where enemies (flowers, insects, both?) disguise themselves as harmless NPCs or as part of the environment sounds good (and calls back to the Blood Roses of AMA's Vale of Tears).
(Apologies for this being so long, I guess it looks shorter on my computer somehow - I tried to keep it as concise as I could given what all I wanted to say. Thanks so much for addressing this comment though!)

Awesome art as always! Are we still doing the five stages of grief? Or we are just doing a whole bunch of environment concept art that we have been seeing lately? Also speaking of the five stages of grief, here is Noah Trevor going through all five stages of grief in a few seconds while interviewing Tomi Lahren. https://imgur.com/gallery/OUXbT (Sorry about the images being on imgur, I'm not the original poster.)
When you said the test-run brought back a flood of memories, was it like a tsunami of feels and memories crashing down on you and drowning in them?
About the patches reward, not hitting 1,000 patrons by the end of March will definitely allow more people to get the patches, as it seems that there are a lot of people who wants the certificate but missed out.
About other possible rewards, we could have an exclusive special coin that you can ONLY get on Patreon. Some of Lulu's hair will be a good reward as well.
I want to point out that we need to be careful on how much reward we want to do for Patreon, because we do not want to run dry of ideas for rewards on Kickstarter when we get to that point.

Yay Pins! , i love the idea of alice chess, it'd be cool to have something of a figurine like that for display even better if it could be used in play on a board.

i'm with you on the chess pieces the feeling of it changed a bit i liked the ethereal look the pieces had

I love the art pieces!! They looked so good unfinished I didn't think they could get any better! I really want them both printed. I love the bunny!!

Going off tangent from the prints, I'd be keen on seeing a mechanic in the new game that is directly lifted from the Alice books, such as needing to go backwards in order to go forward (although normal game play often feels like this, if not so literally) or even needing to take your slice of a cake before it is cut. There are enough such contrivances in the original books as would help to drive one insane. One other thing, which may be impractical for many reasons, I notice the streams are typically starting at 1 30am european time (2 30am from this weekend, if chinese time doesn't go forward) any chance of running the occasional one at a more convenient time for us?

LOL I'm 30 and don't mind the patches or pins one bit. Then again I'm kinda childish.

Absolutely love the artpieces! So much detail! One keeps discovering new details the more you look at them. Looking forward to see you play Alice 1, although I'd have to watch it back. I'm from the Netherlands, so it's the middle of the night for me whenever you go live on Youtube. Love watching it whenever I wake up though! :P Gotta love timezones! >.<

A collectible chess piece for each month of patronage at a certain tier would be... super long :)
Make Nine Inch Nails great again

Love the new Drawings !!! Especialy the rabbit one! ... I have a real huge problem with huge creatures, dunno why, and the tones and the color are great, what I see it´s that the concepts seem really bright in tonality, wich is really interesting, I love the way the chess pieces are connected through that fine thread that leads Alice to her sanity maybe? Or to her insanity? It´s a great concept idea. Also, my Glob, I love pins, I have a collection in progress so that would be incredible, for some ideas I suggest (There are only ideas to help you, Im not demanding anything, you already gave us a lot making this awesome series) maybe keychains, little prints, digital rewards (like wallpapers or bonus in-game one is released), mouse pads, modded chess pieces maybe, ... Hoope it helps you guys!

I have been so eager to see these images finished, and they certainly do not disappoint! There's so much.. WHat's the right word.. "Ambience" in them. You can really start to feel lost in that forest. and ready for battle in the first image. The golden bunny reminds me of El-Ahrairah from Watership Down (the book and the 1978 cartoon). The pink flower petals look so out of place! But I really like it, it emphasize the darkness of everything else and adds a glimmer of hope.
The crying Mock Turtle is a really awesome touch to the arena image. It feels to me a bit like he's crying for Alice, the unfairness of her having to go through all of this (or maybe I'm reading too much into this), and the sky is crying with him.
Also, those glowing things; they are heads, right? I see heads. Lost souls, looking for Alice to help them, trying to bargain with her maybe.
As a last thing, before this gets too long (as usual), I would like to remind everyone that Easter is coming up, which will most certainly add a delay in the delivery of the certificates.

Rewards - pins, tote bags, key-rings, small art prints, Lulu hair and eventually Alice skins and plushies - that'll be great!
~
The unfinished versions of this art were so good I didn't think they can improve much further, but the detailed ones left me speechless!!!

Love the artwork, just amazing

The more detailed versions of these images look awesome. Love the idea of pins!

I am in love with the patches. I am in my 30's as well, and will display as art rather than sew them onto clothing/bags. They'll last longer that way anyway!

I love the Chess Valley art! Print? ;)
I would love a cute Alice acrylic phone charm (or charms) as a reward!
Having a little Alice always with me on my phone would be so cute.
Just Google "acrylic phone charms". You'll see what I mean. ^‿^
I made this little cutie inspired by Jennifer's Alice patch illustrations:
http://fav.me/dc6i234 That's what I want as phone charm! Please...? <3

For me, I like the rewards to be something I can display. I am 30, so too old to properly enjoy patches and pins, but I do have an antique french cabinet, filled with all of my Series one Alice toys, and my madness returns figures, so something I can add to that cabinet to be ooed and ahhhed over would be spectacular! Oh and will you be doing earrings to match the asylum necklace? Please say you are!!

What about a tiny pepper grinder? Also, I love the artworks. Well done to Joey and all involved

In the original books, Alice changed proportions as well as sizes - eg getting a very long neck ("SERPENT! SERPENT!"). I've never seen that in any film or video game adaptation, and it would be AWESOME to incorporate it into A:A! If scale is so malleable, maybe there can be times when it looks like Alice is really small, but she needs to do something to reach waaaaay up to grab something from a mile above her? Assuming that kind of thing isn't utterly impractical for the view model, that is.

Did everyone receive the inmate certificates? Because I was definitely a patron to receive it but haven’t... I may have missed some posts due to work but am wondering. :)
