Doll Parts Roasting on an Open Fire

Greetings Insane Children!

I hope you're all set for a warm and wonderful Christmas and New Year. Myself and Yan have run away from the -3c super humid winter megacity wasteland of Shanghai and will be sailing around Phangn Nga Bay, Thailand enjoying a bit of sunshine and clean air. Not a terrible place to be...

Meanwhile, work on Asylum continues apace. Joey's submitted a handful of new images related to Alice's confrontation with the fire. Sonny is working on a title/logo image which I hope to share soon and Omri is focusing on a photo manipulation of Angelababy as Alice. Fun stuff!

Here's the latest from Joey...

---

American,

I did the concept of Alice on stairs fighting huge doll, also did a quick sketch of some of Alice's movement.

Oh, we have a bloody Alice in Madness Returns as her most special outfit when her health is low, I did us here an Alice on Fire, this outfit could also be a special one she uses in some unique situation. Her hair doesn't have to be straight as shown in the image, but I do like them to be glowing bright.

So, shall I work on the concept of Alice flying in the hole? Or you want me to work on sth. else? Shall I work on this area or shall I move on to another phase of emotion?
Cheers!

Joey

Joey,

These images are fantastic. Really love them!

How about working on one of the other stages of grief? You could do depression or acceptance? For depression... perhaps a level where it's always raining, foggy, and dark? It could be a mixture of London, the Asylum, some park or forest where Alice played with her family as a child, and parts of Wonderland - all mixed together. These are places where there were happy memories but now those memories only cause her pain. So it's like places which were bright and sunny and happy... but now they are cold and dark and rainy.

Because depression can really cause a person to fall down and get stuck... maybe this area could be ruled by some sort of shadow... Alice has to sneak around and avoid being caught by some "dark beam" of anti-light. If she gets caught in the shadow then she will be lost to the darkness. Powerless, sinking into some deep dark place, and then have to climb out again... It could be like every time that beam hits her a pit opens in the ground under her feet and swallows her... then she has to climb out again.

This level could be very lacking in color - lots of purple, brown, grey, black, and white...

What do you think?

Cheers,

-a

PS: A bit of housekeeping... The Chaos Necklaces are being manufactured as we speak. We've also got hands-on very nice boxes in which to ship them. And I'm working on a collector card to complete the set. Expect those to ship out in January.

The art print for Patrons which should have gone out in December has been printed but not yet shipped. I'll probably bundle that together with the January print (for those of you on the monthly art feed). Apologies for the delay - I was just swamped in December with travel, Mysterious business, meetings, etc. Will catch up in 2018!

I'll also take a look at adjusting the $50/$100 tiers next month as was mentioned in a previous update.

As always, please share your feedback and comments below. We'll address all that during the next live stream (first week of 2018).

From Thailand with Love,

Things from Joey is looking really good, exploring the depression stage would be a good next step in the progress. It should be noted that a lot of people suffer from depression, and we should show the effects of what it can cause, but not make it too exaggerated compared to what people really experience. In a previous post where I commented on the concept version of the first picture on top on this post and posted a picture about it. Let me clarify it a bit as you seemed a bit unsure what I was getting at during the livestream. What I was trying to say is that the stairs that Alice is walking up will start merging with the walls and ceiling. This will add to the quirkiness of Wonderland and a possible idea expanding on your idea of going through doors to walk on the ceiling, except that the door will not be there. By the time the game would be in development, the newer engines should be able to make this possible. The Fire Alice looks really cool, can't wait to see a "finished" version of her from Joey. I wonder if there will be a different version of that in areas that is not associated with the fire.

I liked the part when describes the doors passages and stairs. I think that a Evil within vibe can be taken for some of the rooms story wise speaking , like opening the door on the house and watch a forest and a little plain all of the sudden(SPOILER FOR TEW) the place shifts and you go from a house in fire to a lovely tea party garden. Suddenly watch all kinda disturbed things like Alice 1's Hatter domain, shifting from one Art direction to another. Maybe something not fitting in the place, like green flowers or vegetation while everything is on fire. burned coal and machines on a doll house. It would be cool if Alice didn't understand what is happening or where she is, but unconsously molding the world she is in (her mind).

So many good things!! Such a creepy doll! and yes I love this idea of depression and I agree that the villain should be some kind of horror/shadow Alice that is causing the mist? Is there a possibility this area could be related to the pool of tears? I always found that the first game captures the pool of tears in a way that was almost sad and misty like you described just an idea. Fire Alice is so cool tho she is missing some things I do like this concept a lot! ๐Ÿ’œ

These concept images are great, it is nice to see the room destroyed by fire image in colour, great job Sonny! I also felt a bit of claustrophobia within this room, as it is so small and yet it has so much in it, which is excellent. This would make game play more intense, exciting and difficult, by having to battle enemies in a smaller area and having them appear from around a corner. Hope everyone has a great Christmas and New Yearโ€™s, looking forward to seeing more concepts in the New Year, keep up the great work everyone.

I agree that it looks really cool, but Alice representing the fire seems...off. Maybe she could look more like the aftermath of the fire rather than the very disaster that killed her family?

Looks great, not 100% Sure I am on board with HER representing the fire, would..or at least does in my head make sense her clothing/surroundings would be on fire but either way I can't deny it looks BAD ASS!!

Not a fan of the hair, just seems cliche. I understand fire as a theme but the hair looks too literal to me.

The fire alice is soooo cool <3

I love the fire Alice, but instead of the butterflies maybe some smoke or small flames. I also think the alchemy symbols should be preserved on her dress and they could be glowing as well. And another thing i wish was preserved is that beautiful pattern on the vorpal blade that makes it so unique. Everything is looking so nice, I'm so excited to be a part of this.

Omg, Fire Alice!!! <3 :D Not even an array of emojies can compensate for the lack of words to describe my excitement about Fire Alice! :D <3 As the new "hysteria mode", when she's overrun with enemies, cornered, she sets herself on fire in an explosion that pushes the enemies away, and allows her to run to safety (or at least, away from whatever's trying to kill her). I really like the ideas about the depression stage, running away from the 'anti-light' and getting stuck in holes, when it hits her. Struggling with depression on a regular basis myself, this feels very relatable. Always having to be on guard and aware of what the mind is doing. I really like Josey Howarth idea of an "anti-Alice", and again, a very relatable concept. During a depression you can easily become your own enemy; if you're not aware of you mind, it will lead you into dark(er) places. I agree with keeping the level generally bleak in terms of colour, but I'm thinking of maybe using some colourfull guide, like the lamp post in the Hyde Park level in Madness Returns. If she's walking through a forest, it could be the singing flowers, singing positive messages to Alice, as a contrast to the depression. The happy thoughts you need, to get through a depression and out on the other side. I hope this makes sense (:

Awesome fire Alice concept, would prefer the hair still down though. Depression ideas sound great, but instead of a shadow following her, the ground can be crumbling around her opening a dark pit. Just a little tweak to that, and another tweak to J. Howarth's idea: instead of a simple shadow Alice it could be something more original. I'm thinking of a horror kind of Alice, to make it more terrifying to be pursued by. Fire Alice would work really well for this as well, but the idea of that as the new Hysteria form is probably too popular and rooted...

I am really digging the fire dress. I think in regards to the game smoldering effects might be interesting. Like her skin or hair could be a more black and charred color with veins of fire and cinder in places. I think preserving the alchemy symbols on the dress would also be important and those could be outlined in cinder flare as well. Mixing cinders with actual fire and smoldering to contrast between dark and light color tones would make a visually striking appearance much like hysteria Alice in madness returns. Also glowing eyes are awesome :D

First, squee at fire Alice! Second, the concept of the depression level is interesting, though I wonder if it might be worth taking it one step further. Some sufferers of depression see themselves as the enemy. So maybe a shadow or anti-Alice could be what she's hiding from, or trying to prevent herself from confronting.

I love this firey Alice. The hair going up really sells it as an inferno or a candle light. Could potentially lead to some cool animations in game as well.

You've smashed it Joey! Everything looks spectacular! Can't wait to see what you come up with next. American, I hope you and Yan have fun riding the waves on Chaos, have a good vacation :)

Oh my gosh I am in deep love with the fire dress, the use of her butterflys as coming apart and her molten tears are just great, the glow of her hair and the tarnished boots, I love it all. The doll concept artwork looks awesome, definitely getting nice warm fuzzy Alice feeling from it. The new moving mechanics look nice, I liked the triple jump glide so nice to see something similar. I hope you guys are enjoying your time out in the clear skies and sun (even if the sun isn't my cup of tea!)

I love the increased reference to dolls this time around, dollhouse was my favorite symbolism in the last game :D

Damn, Joey! That Alice on fire is looking badass! And your ideas on depression, the dark, melancholic, lifeless ambience is spot on. Running away from the shadows otherwise you fall on the dark pit and have to climb all the way out. Because that's what you do when you suffer from depression. Keep up the goodwork!

That art is fantastic! Really digging the themes of depression & mourning being a pivotal factor after the fire. Great work!
