It was supposed to be an easy internship. Coming straight off her college degree in accounting, Lucy had started work at one of the country’s top firms. However, what was supposed to be a simple summer of filing papers, answering phones, and getting coffee — with the promise of a job at the end of it — had turned into an almighty struggle.  

It was the Friday of her first week at the firm, and Lucy had been tasked of getting some files from the record room. It was late, the end of a long shift caused by an important merger the firm was managing, and Lucy was tired. That fatigue, combined with her (company regulation) high heels and an old stepladder, led to a rather inevitable outcome. Honestly, it was a wonder that the office “days without an accident” counter had managed to reach as high as 65.  

Predictably, when attempting to descend the ladder, the extra weight of the box of files caused Lucy to fall off balance, sending her crashing to the floor. The crack of her bones may have only been audible to her, as she was alone in the room, but her screams of pain were heard all over the office. An ambulance was called, hospital visited, X-rays taken, casts applied.   

By the following Monday, Lucy was back at work, refusing to loose any ground in her important internship. Her right arm had suffered the worst of the damage, being the one she had chosen to break her fall with, and the one the box fell on top of. Her broken, wrist, radius, humerus, and dislocated shoulder (combined with her refusal of surgery) had necessitied a rather massive cast, stretching from her fingers, all down her arm, over the shoulder to some unconfirmed point on her torso — there being significant office gossip about how low the cast did go. Her leg has similarly received a large cast, running from her toes, right to the top of her thigh. Due to the doctor’s orders of elevation, office employees were aware of quite how high this one went!  

Since being back at work, Lucy had noticed an increase in attention she got at the office, which she naively attributed to genuine empathy for her broken situation, rather than a curiosity for her casts and exposed toes. Still her painkillers kept her in a good mood, and she was barely having to lift any boxes anymore, as she could always find a male office worker willing to do the work. Lucy had even noticed one of the other interns, a cute brunette called Izzy, begin to spend a lot more time by her desk. Perhaps this accident hadn’t made her the “unlucky office girl” after all…
