It's similar to green book in the sense that it's actually an industrially produced crowd pleaser masked as a serious adult drama that has cookie cutter explicit messaging.

2024-11-02 20:01:43 +0000 UTCFor me, the ending is the final nail in the coffin in Thomas's attempt to find a pope without scandal. It's a essentially a dark joke on everything he and others have been trying to do the entire movie. There isn't much else to explore beyond understanding Thomas and company's "failure." Also the older, more conservative audience members definitely gasped at my theater too, especially the ending lol.

2024-11-02 18:24:06 +0000 UTCIt’s a fairly tight, conventional thriller for the first hour-and-a-half, but the last 30 minutes are simply laughable. Is that supposed to be some “gotcha” at the end? I know it’s a movie, but the final selection is simply unbelievable even before we get the twist.

I was quite entertained by it, although I’m still not sure what to make of the ending reveal which felt abrupt and then the movie just ended immediately afterwards without really exploring what that meant. It was funny hearing the older, more conservative audience I had gasp at some of the twists lol. As for why it’s getting so much Oscar buzz, I think it’s just been a week year for traditional awards players so movies like Conclave get a lot more attention. Ralph Fiennes is always great to watch which helps.
