R.I.P. James Earl Jones

The voice in our hearts always. What's your favorite James Earl Jones performance?

Comments

It’s not my favorite role of his but it’s my favorite movie he was in. His first acting role in Dr. Strangelove. Kubrick with an all time eye for acting atlent

Although his role is more supporting, my first experience with James Earl Jones (with the exception of his incomparable Mufasa voiceover) was actually 'The Sandlot.' His brief runtime in that movie was always something so special. The movie overall for me was one (and is one) for the books - such a favorite from my youth. But his contribution, even in the limited duration, was one that I'll never forget. I'm so glad he was part of that movie.

I certainly wouldn’t call it “his best ever”, but him contributing to the Simpsons first ever Halloween special with his great reading of “The Raven” will always be very close to my heart.

Gotta throw out Coming To America, cause that’s a certified classic comedy and no one else has mentioned it.

I actually saw him get in his car after a performance on broadway of cat on a hot tin roof. I watched Lion King recently and yes, not a false note in that performance. He made a great powerful lion/king emotionally intuitive.

I mean, Mufasa will always have that special, ultra-resonant place in my heart. Not a single false note in one breath of that voice performance that even reminds me of my own dad. BUT I feel like people generally don’t give him enough credit for his on-stage work, which is so incredible and varied. Everything from Shakespeare to August Wilson, he was just *chef’s kiss* Honestly, he was just one of those actors where anytime he would show up he was an assured, comforting presence (The Sandlot is a great example). I’ll miss him dearly.

Yeah big one for me too

Mufasa. As a little kid, I didn't know who the voice actors were and Mufasa in particular had such a commanding presence with that booming voice that he was always intimidating to me despite the warm and tender scenes he also had with Simba. It wasn't until years later that I realized he was the same voice as Darth Vader and it made perfect sense to me why he was so scary. If I could have someone else's voice instead of my high pitched nasally self, he would be one of my top choices for sure. We'll always love you, James.

Outside of Vader, for me it has to be Thulsa Doom in Conan the Barbarian, he accounts himself very well in what is almost certainly the most well regarded Sword & Sorcery film of the 20th century.

I think the Darth Vader voice is my favorite. It’s just so iconic I can’t deny its power. But I have to say I rewatched Dr. Strangelove a few months ago and was like “Is that James Earl Jones?” And it was. What a pleasant surprise.

Lol in high school my friends and I would quote this scene all the time. Definitely the role that first comes to mind when I think of him. RIP https://youtu.be/F91GMDeouSs?si=AZ5tQ48z2xqtoeeN

I'm stuck between The Lion King & Field of Dreams. With Field of Dreams it's just a movie that gets me to tear up but his role as Mufasa is just iconic.

Field of Dreams. His hilarious tirade towards Kevin Costner is dialogue that I quote whenever I’m irritated or stressed out lol. “Peace, love dope!”
