David Lynch

I'm sure you've all heard. He smoked cigarettes as if it was 1955, as long as I've known of him. So I am obviously not surprised by this news. But...the weight of existentialism has to hit us on occasion with news like this. I think about all the great artists who have existed throughout time. I feel very very lucky, to be alive in the same era as David Lynch. We should all be so lucky. My heart goes out to him, and I hope he can feel the love of us all.

So sad to hear these news. It's gonna be very difficult for him to stay so many hours at home. Unfortunately smoking is really a VERY unhealthy habit. Totally agree that it's a rare privilege to live in the same era with such a great artist. Lynch is the greatest film director living today, hands down.

I love David Lynch. Nothing wrong with him calling it a career and focusing on living his best life while he can. Emphysema is no joke. And from the way he sounds, it seems like he’s not doing so well. I’m thankful for all of the brilliance and originality he’s brought to the small screen as well the big screen over his 50+ year career. Have a damn fine cup of coffee, Mr. Lynch. You’ve earned it.

This news made me sad when I heard it. Lynch is a truly exceptional artist and human. I revisit the opening sequence from one of my favorite movies ever, Blue Velvet, often. It’s an amazing reflection on existence, the equal strangeness in the beauty and horror in the world. He is in my thoughts and I hope he recovers.

I literally just got done watching Fire Walk With Me for the very first time, and then saw this post. Horrible news, but glad he’s still with us. Hope he gets the best treatment.

First read your post and assumed the worst. So, I’m just glad he’s alive. The man literally brought me out of a depression and ignited my love for movies when I saw Mulholland Dr….No art has impacted me that deeply….retired or not, his work will outlive him for a very very long time.

It don't surprise me. Lynch doesn't seem like the type to follow trends or lifestyles. We all have our contradictions. I could care less whether he makes movies or not. I just care that he's well and happy, painting or doing whatever it is that he wants. Yeah, I drew him as a commission, and it was him smoking a cigarette lol

I want to revisit that one. It was my first Lynch film as a kid lol. And yes, my grandfather also smoked for many years, and it made his final years very difficult

Yeah, I heard about it. I’m not surprised. Every other photo or piece of video footage of him has a cigarette dangling from his mouth. It’s funny that for all his embracing of Transcendental Meditation, which sounds like a New Age practice, he was pretty old school when it came to smoking and diet. The dude went to Bob’s Big Boy Burgers every day for years and ordered coffee and milkshakes. I wouldn’t hold out for another movie from him. I’m willing to bet his career as a filmmaker is done. He’ll likely continue to paint or make music, which are mediums that are more self-contained and don’t put his health at risk. Either way, he’s had a hell of a career and we can only hope that he’s able to spend the rest of his life in relative comfort and contentment.

Damn, that sucks. Those who know me know I lost my grandfather who smoked his whole adult life to lung cancer years ago so I can imagine the pain he's probably going through. I watched The Straight Story for the first time a few weeks ago and it's now one of my favorite films of his. If that really is it for him, he'll always be remembered as a fine director who prioritized artistry over dollars.
