Topic Video Question

What's an actor/actress that you find to be overrated and why?

Comments

Actor: Samuel L Jackson, because he is in a plethora of roles every year and his character roles feel the verbatim same in every movie he is in. Actress: Scarlett Johansson because I feel she is in unnecessary casted roles and the major roles feel half way vitally performed to me!

Liked him in ‘Snowpiercer’. Also playing a dick in ‘Scott Pilgrim’. As far as Captain America goes, most all of the MCU characters were pretty 2 dimensional—not Oscar worthy, but I’ve rewatched the movies a couple of times a year.

Some mentioned Penelope Cruz... I just want to say that she's great in Ferrari.

I wrote this before but Leonardo DiCaprio. He's good as caricatural characters in Tarantino's movies, he isn't believable in drama. For example, I didn't like his performance in The Departed. He was playing the character, not becoming one, if that makes any sense. Same with The Revenant. Academy Award? For what? It was more physically demanding role which many other actors could handle. Saying that, I admire his performance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

That's why I liked him better in Knives Out where he was a real asshole and hilariously so.

Some actors have the gift to cry on cue and make their mucus membranes drip and Penelope Cruz is one of them... overrated she is not, is she trying too hard? Maybe... anyways, funny someone actually put Meryl Strip as overrated... lol... mmm. Joaquim Phoenix can be great... just not very consistent... yeah, I think he's overrated...

Penelope Cruz. I think she’s decent, but every time I see her yelling or getting emotional on screen (especially in Ferrari) I can just sense that she’s desperately trying to win an Oscar, and it’s very distracting.

merly streep. her approach is too impersonal . i get the impression that she treats every role as an acting exercise. i prefer glen close , even though she doesn,t receive half the attention. ( having said that , i thought she was great in death becomes her. her pretty witch persona was perfect for that role)

I think I would have to go with Chris Evans. It’s very easy to see how he’s looked at as a charming, attractive leading man, but I just think he’s too bland for any real, fleshed out character to come through in his performance. Too safe, vanilla, milquetoast, watered-down, uninspired, synonyms, etc. Even his most popular role, Captain America, I just could never buy, even though everybody seems to love it. Which makes me feel like I’m crazy or missing something. I just never could by him as this unshakable leader who could command the respect of all these super-beings. He’s written like one, but the performance just doesn’t support it in my opinion. Maybe if he tried going for a little more grit and stoicism, I don’t know… Also, and this has nothing to do with his acting, but something about Chris Evans himself never quite sat right with me personally. He has that Will Smith thing about him where his public image and persona is so well manicured and likeable that it just doesn’t feel genuine. Like he’s keeping one or two skeletons firmly hidden away in the back of his closet. If something unsavory were to come out of the woodworks in the next few years, I wouldn’t be surprised. I’m basing that assumption on absolutely NOTHING at all, it’s just a feeling I have. I don’t know how else to put it, he strikes me as the kind of celebrity who has women sign NDA’s before sex lol He was really good in Puncture though, I will say. Though it was odd seeing someone with a jacked super hero body playing a drug addict.

Jessica Lange - her performances almost always seem disconnected/disinteresting, or (like in the case of Tootsie) she is totally miscast. I've never seen her bring a performance that outshines the material or inhabit a character in a way that steals a scene/film.

Ross Skilton

Nicole Kidman. I can't remember the last time I liked her in a role. Even most recently in The Northman, she just did nothing for me. And since I always go to AMC, I have to sit through her advertisement every showing. Pain

Cameron Q Nelson

The Rock seems like a nice person, but anything I see him in, I can never forget that it's him playing a role, which to me is not ideal in a movie where I'd like the option to suspend my disbelief.

Troy B.

You're gonna hate me for this but Joseph Cotten. He has a very dry on screen persona that lacks any spark or personality which makes him lack any chemistry with other actors. The only exception is Orson Welles which their interactions in Citizen Kane and The Third Man are fire but otherwise he almost always has me struggling to stay awake.

Hi deepfocuslens, love your content! Maybe not a hot take, but I tend to find Tom Hanks kind of samey in his roles, though it makes me appreciate when he does something different like Road to Perdition or the last third of Captain Phillips.
