Overlook Hotel

Lol...so the other night I went to go see The Shining at a theater playing in my area with my parents. My mom realized that we had been to the Overlook exterior years ago on a family summer vacation. She couldn't find a picture of the actual hotel in the old family photos but, this is second best. Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood. Who else has been?

I’ve visited the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, but now I need to complete the Shining pilgrimage and visit the one in Oregon lol

Hi Maggie I can think of three films that are a bit trippy. The wizard of Oz, Alice in wonderland and willy Wonka. Can you think of any others?

Lucky. I've never been to the Western half of the United States. I've always wanted to go to one of those Turner Classic Movies film festivals they have every spring in Hollywood. Probably the only Hollywood thing worth visiting there. I've been to New York where they have a TCM tour bus which I told my parents we had to go on and we did. We visited the Tiffany's jewelry store from Breakfast at Tiffany's and the actual apartment house that Holly Golightly lived in which is like a shrine to me. The apartments were still occupied and valued in the six digit range so we couldn't trespass on the property. The bus also took us to the location of the vent that blew Marilyn Monroe's dress, the fountain that Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel went nuts at in The Producers, the spot where Woody Allen and Diane Keaton sat looking at the bridge in Manhattan, Meg Ryan's shop from You've Got Mail, the Rosemary's Baby apartment building, and the Gozer building from Ghostbusters which still has the church that Stay Puft stepped on. The tour guide also did a movie trivia game which I tied for first along with some kid who looked like he was 12 or 13. We both won exclusive T-shirts with the tour label which I still have to this day even though it's a little small for me now as I've gained a few pounds since then. Outside of the tour, we also went to the FAO Schwartz where Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia danced on the piano in Big which was still there and a Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant which had tons of Forrest Gump decor and the film playing on the televisions. Unfortunately, the shrimp there was not that great. Red Lobster honestly has way better shrimp. Overall, one of the best family vacations I've ever been on.

How does an adorable little girl grow up to be such a bamf?

Same. It wasn't until high school that I saw the movie and said, "Hey..."

Very cool.

Haha nice. See as a kid I was too young to make any Shining connections unfortunately.

I grew up in the Portland/Vancouver area and have been up there several times. When I took my daughter to see Doctor Sleep a few years ago she asked "why are they showing Timberline?" She had not seen The Shining at that point.

We've opted for a gothic horror themed ceremony and reception locally that won't break the bank so it all works out.

Haha that's awesome. I can imagine it would be expensive. But also...bad omens!

My fiance and I briefly flirted with the idea of doing our wedding at the Stanley Hotel but decided it wasn't worth going into massive debt for. Would love to visit there and where they shot the exteriors one day though cause it is a top 5 horror movie and book for me.
