February Movies

What are you looking forward to next month?

Comments

I'm not as up to date with Shyamalan but I did enjoy Split quite a bit. Glass (2019) I heard was a huge disappointment so I passed. Old (2021) looked a little too out there for me. Of course, this is coming from a guy who enjoyed The Happening. Mark Wahlberg begging for his life from a plant is where its at.

Stephen

oh yuuuup, there’s an Inland Empire restoration coming next week too but idk the locations

Jared Angcanan

I had no idea all these re-releases were coming out!

Knock At the Cabin is most intriguing for me. Should I see Split and some of the more recent Shyamalan movies ahead of time? It's been a while since I've checked one out.

Skinamarink is still on my list of things to get to. Glad you continue to champion it. Haha yes Cocaine Bear looks fun. But I think I'm most interested in Knock at the Cabin. Admittedly I haven't seen a Shyamalan film in a long ass time. Never saw Split or The Happening or anything in a while. But I liked the trailer for this one, and I need to get back into my Shyamalan appreciation lol.

Haha the Cocaine Bear looked quite fun, won't lie.

I don’t think it’s a masterpiece, but it is one of the scariest experiences I’ve had in a theater. I typically get quite annoyed with horror movies that spend most of their runtime on dark spaces and creepy noises with occasional jump scares in a house. But Skinamarink works because it’s about that, where in other movies it’s a meaningless gimmick. Seldom does a movie so effectively take me back to very childlike fears of what could be lurking between the cracks of my house. For most of its runtime, I wasn’t sure if I was more scared of dark spaces, faint shapes within them, or the bright reveals. Even the digital grain that it has, which sometimes bothers me, really adds to the feeling of staring into the abyss in the confines of your own home. I really enjoyed it, and even if you don’t end up liking it, it’s a pretty innovative film. The only one I can remember to get the creepypasta found footage throwback thing right.

Damn, that’s too bad. Reviews I read touted it as some kind of avant-garde horror masterpiece. But I’ll still see it though. If only to get an idea of what this director is all about.

Ant-Man (which I might bother to watch in the cinema) and Cocaine Bear (which I won't watch until it's on streaming) are pretty much the only things of interest to me in Feb.

Can comment on Skinamarink. It's a movie I admire more than I liked. I appreciate how abstract it is but it also came off as an empty exercise rather than one with any sort of meaning or anything to take away. It also had some truly obnoxious jumpscares that I hated and really made the experience miserable. Because instead of being overtaken with the dread of the movie, I was just scared of the next loud noise. I'll be more interested in the directors next feature where he is hopefully working with a more ambitious budget and concept cause, like I said, like the idea just not how it was executed here.

Nothing much exciting coming out this month. Despite the release of a few event movies in recent years, February is still something of a dead zone for premieres. This month it seems to be the new Ant-Man film, which…I don’t care about. Haven’t been interested in Marvel since Endgame. But here’s some notables: Knock at the Cabin—it seems that in recent years M. Night Shyamalan has gotten some of the stink off his name. He’s not the punchline he used to be a decade ago (I still remember people laughing their asses off when they saw his name in the trailer for Devil). That might have a lot to do with The Visit and Split, which were more entertaining than anyone anticipated. I don’t know about this one starring Dave Bautista and Ron Weasley, but I do know that Shyamalan hasn’t lost his hit-or-miss status for me yet. I have not forgotten how Glass turned out. Titanic—I might go see this again in theaters if mood strikes me. Did Cameron digitally add in a side mullet for Kate Winslet’s character for the film like he did in the new posters? Because that would be great. Magic Mike’s Last Dance—actually, I have no plans to see it. But I thought it should be brought to the attention of anyone who would want to see it. Sharper—this one’s about con artists working an ultra-wealthy New York family. Starring Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan. If anything, it’s reminded me that I need to catch up on Succession. Marlowe—honestly, I had no idea this movie existed until I looked up February releases. It stars Liam Neeson as the iconic Philip Marlowe, it’s directed by Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, among others) and scripted by William Monahan (The Departed). Got some good names attached, but isn’t Neeson a little too old to be playing Marlowe, especially since he’s supposed to be kicking everyone’s ass who gets in his way? Does Philip Marlowe also have a particular set of skills? Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon—now here’s a re-release that I’m excited about. No doubt being put out to ride on the Oscar wave being made by Michelle Yeoh, but whatever. It’s been so long since I’ve seen it that it’d be great to see it ion the big screen again. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey—if they got the same actor to voice Pooh as they did in the cartoons, it would be a perfect movie. As it is, I’ll most likely wait until streaming. Cocaine Bear— a great premise that makes me hope for a great execution. But really, they should bring in Liam Neeson at the end to fight the bear hand-to-hand. I mean, if he’s going to continue to fight in movies, I’d rather have it be a coked-up grizzly bear than a bunch of goons. He’s already fought wolves, so it wouldn’t be that big a stretch. Linoleum—interesting premise that has Jim Gaffigan as a failed children’s show host attempt to build a space shuttle in his backyard. Weirdness ensues. I’ll wait to see what people think of it before I watch. That’s all I got. Did anyone see Skinamarink yet? Is it good? Please let me know.

Feb 3 Knock At the Cabin - M. Night Shyamalan’s latest apocalypse movie. Looks interesting based off the trailer. Feb 15 Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey - Amazing things can happen when content enters the public domain. A slasher where Winnie and Piglet take out a bunch of college kids? Why not. Marlowe - A film noir starring Liam Neeson as Phillip Marlowe, directed by Neil Jordan, and features a great supporting cast. Feb 17 Return to Seoul - I’ve heard good things. Pacifiction -Again, heard good things. Feb 24 Cocaine Bear - The trailer sold me on this one. Looks hilarious.

I’ve been LOVING Dave Bautista, so I’m excited to see him branch out into the thriller genre in Knock at the Cabin. Also, I’m hoping the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon re-release is hitting my area, that’s one of my all-time favorites. Idk how you feel about wuxia films, but that might be a fun one to review.

Infinity Pool might actually be getting released next month for me, so that would be my #1 unless I see it this month. If not, then definitely Knock at the Cabin. I’m a Shyamalan fan, minus a lot of the middle of his career. I actually think his last one, Old, was maybe the best thing he’s done since The Village (Split’s awesome though). So I’m really looking forward to whatever this is. Other than that, I might check out Cocaine Bear and the Winnie the Pooh slasher.

Jackson Littlewood

Rough month for new releases. Hoping to catch the Titanic 25th anniversary screening. That Winnie the Pooh schlocky slasher could be fun. But otherwise essentially nothing unless I missed something big. And of course 80 for Brady.
