Twitter

One thing I have learned in life is that if you are a fan of a content creator, a celebrity, a famous person of any sort who has some sort of public presence/persona.....don't follow them on twitter.

No idea. I didn't even realize it was still around.

I am about to borrow empire magazine from the library. I haven't read it about two years. I noticed that it was less interesting during the COVID period. Has anyone read it recently? Is it back to normal?

I agree with you for sure. But at the same time, we are always performing anyway, so I think some awareness there is okay. I'm an avid instagram person as example...but I see it as fun, and a place to be creative and show your point of view, without taking it too seriously, as if it's reality. It's all fascinating, how we create the online personas, and feel weirdly more connected to them than who we are in real life.

Generally, yes, absolutely. This is *not* an original thought of mine, but when we dissolve the barriers between our public selves and our private selves (and what is art, if not an expression of the second) we get a society of perpetual performance. And our artists are not immune to this, even the ones who use Twitter to be funny or wholesome. However! There’s a part of this that I think can be productive. I deleted my Twitter seven years ago and my FB this past year. I absolutely abhor social media. But I think for aspiring artists of any medium, it’s important to see that their artistic influences and deities—if they’re still among the living—are also human beings who do silly and banal human things, like taking pictures of their pasta dinners, or posting pictures of themselves in high school with ancient hairstyles, etc. Sometimes I find that stuff weirdly inspiring? But when it’s used in a calculated way for self-promotion, or self-congratulations, or ranting, etc. social meteor is a hideous thing.

Doesn't matter who or what you follow, Twitter is one giant cesspit of toxicity which is unsalvageable no matter what Elon Musk does to save it. Deleting all of my social media accounts was one of the best life decisions I've ever made.

Some people on twitter are great. Conan O'Brien is a great example. He has fun with it, is always witty, never takes it seriously. I think if you recognize these platforms for what they are, and recognize that it's all a strange abstract extension of reality...then I'm cool with it. You're not buying into it too much. My problem though...is too many people take it seriously, or use it as a crutch for their perceptions of reality. And people forget that they are talking into an abyss....but one where I unfortunately, can witness your bitching first-hand. And it's not attractive to me.

yeah I agree. There are certain artists who I've liked, and still like...but they are just too cynical on twitter, in ways that show a lot of immaturity. It can be really annoying. At a certain point...it becomes hard to view the artists in any other way, than a whiney bitch. There is maturity and some dignity in preserving aspects of yourself, especially as a public figure.

Deepfocuslens

Not in particular. I mean, there are definitely quite a few I could name. But...it's more just collectively overtime, it reveals a lot of weakness.

Deepfocuslens

It’s so disappointing when someone whose work you think is so measured and thoughtful reveals themselves to be as impulsive as all of the other Twitter nuts. There’s nothing wrong with having strong reactions to things. I just expect thoughtful artists to still be thoughtful on social media and not barf out all their emotional responses to everything.

Jim Barnes

yeah that’s a big reason why i deleted my account are you talking about someone specific tho👀👀👀

Jared Angcanan

Yeah don’t think it’s good to give everyone a public platform where they could broadcast their every thought in like 280 characters. There’s a lot of stupid shit in even the most brilliant persons brain that doesn’t need to be said out loud lmaoo
