January Movies

January is one of the most silent months for movies understandably, but is there anything you guys are looking forward to? I'm skeptical about The Last of Us on HBO because I'm a fan of the video game. But...I am intrigued. That's really all I got. I've been kinda tuned out more than usual to the external stuff as you guys know...which basically means I have no clue what's up.

I'm rolling the dice on these in January: 1. (TV) - Pale Blue Eye - "Darkest night, black with hell-charneled fury, leaving only that deathly pale blue eye." I'm a sucker for Edgar Allan Poe. A gothic period piece with Christian Bale playing a detective that teams up with Poe to solve a murder, I'm in! 2. Infinity Pool - really hope this movie holds no punches. 3. Meagan - hope it comes with extra cheese! 4. Plane - another movie that I'll only find worth it, if the director committed to the kind of movie the trailer says it is. 5. Missing - it's a Screenlife movie from the crew behind "Searching". Expecting a cool little whodunit. 6. (TV) Last of Us - Liked the story in the game...so unfortunately I already know the story. Wish they would've went the route where they focus on different characters who inhabit the same video game world at the same time. Hope they nail it.

Fillmore Pockets

I’m catching up on movies I have yet to see this past year. But here’s a list of films I came across that are coming out in January. Nothing I’m too excited about: M3gan—the one about a creepy robot girl who goes crazy and tries to kill her surrogate family. They already made a meme off the trailer with the creepy dance that she does. Might be fun in a junky, low-down kind of way A Man Called Otto—Tom Hanks plays a crusty old grouch of a man who hates the world until a mother and daughter move in and teach him How to Love Again. You already know where it goes just from me talking about it. Sole point of interest: Tom Hanks playing a jerk. He kind of got pigeonholed into being our Cinematic Patron Saint of Decency going all the way back to the ‘90s, so it’s always fun to see him cut loose and go against that. The Old Way—Nicolas Cage plays a former gunfighter in the Old West who must return to his old ways in order to save the people he loves. I have my fingers crossed that his old ways involve snorting a shitload of cocaine and going all Bad Lieutenant on everybody, but I don’t think they’re going to go in that direction. Alas. The Son—one of the last Oscar contenders to come out, this one being the sequel to the Anthony Hopkins Alzheimer’s drama The Father which he won his second Oscar for. I haven’t heard too many good things about it, but Hugh Jackman is being pushed as a Best Actor candidate for his role as a father dealing with a troubled son. Might be worth seeing for him alone, depending on how you feel about Jackman. Alice, Darling—an Anna Kendrick drama about a woman dealing with an abusive relationship. Not much to say about that one, other than I’m a Kendrick fan (the interviews she gives anyways). I think it’s going to be on Apple+. Close—the latest from A24. This one is a French film about two boys whose intense friendship is suddenly ended by tragedy. Sounds like a real comedy, that one. But hey, if you’re up for it, it’s there to see. Could be good. That’s all I got. I’m not too excited about The Last of Us show either. I mean, given the emotionally involving, cinematic nature of the game (one of my favorite video games ever, btw), I have to ask: What’s the point? What can they bring to that story that isn’t already there (maybe a course correction for what happened in the second one?) But I’ll check out at least the first episode, see what they do with it.

Bennett Oliver

In this culture or lack thereof, I wouldn't be surprised one bit if TLOU turns out to be another disaster especially since the abysmally written Part 2 was a huge financial hit despite the backlash it got. Though I wouldn't be as upset as most as I'm so not a fan of the first game's story but even I'll admit that it was at least competently told unlike Part 2 which was...ugh!

Wolfman Brandon

The only one I’m intrigued by is The Old Way starring Nic Cage. Very DTV looking western that I hope features some great Mega Cage moments. January isn’t great lol Edit: Scratch that, didn’t know Infinity Pool was that soon. Possessor was a banger

Jackson Littlewood

100% with Tyler. Possessor is great and the trailer for Infinity Pool is insane. Another horror movie with Mia Goth going crazy you say? Sign me up. Maybe review Possessor one week and then Infinity Pool the following week?

Stephen

Infinity Pool, the new Brandon Cronenberg joint, looks sick. I really like his last movie Possessor so have high hopes for this one.
