Memories

Been looking through a ton of old photos recently. My grandmother passed away at the beginning of November, and since then I've been feeling quite nostalgic. My grandmother was in Marfa,Texas during the shooting of the film Giant back in the late 50s. She was quite proud of the fact that she got to see Elizabeth Taylor, who she described as having the most beautiful eyes she had ever seen. She was also a huge Rock Hudson fan, so...it's a memory she loved to share. It remained her favorite movie throughout her life. I just happened to find this tiny little photo here from the occasion. You can see the famous house from the film in the background, the WB trailer as well, and  in the foreground you can see the two chairs with the names "Taylor" and "Hudson" on the back.

Thank you for saying so. I ended up checking out Giant on my own, but I definitely had much more of an incentive because of her.

Wow. That's amazing. Surprisingly I've heard many stories over the years of people who have family connected to showbiz stories. Thank you for saying so.

My grandpa was Italian and before he died, he told me he was a distant relative to Aldo Silvani who he had the same last name as and I found out later was the magician in Nights of Cabiria and the circus owner in La Strada. I sure hope you're handling the loss better than I did that painful, painful summer 5 years ago. Can't believe it's been that long since I first subscribed to you.

I’m sorry for your loss, but I’m glad that you found another way to connect to her even after she passed. I wasn’t tight with my grandfather, but it helped me process the loss when I learned about the movies and music he liked from the people who were close to him. Was she the one who introduced you to Giant?

Jared Angcanan

I'm not sure. I just know that she stood on the sides with a few bystanders while they were working. She wrote about it once so maybe she explains the details further. I'll have to check on that. Too bad she didn't get to see James Dean. I would've fainted haha. No, unfortunately she wasn't there during the other films. Just passing through.

Thank you so much. haha Yes! I might share some more once I gather them.

I'm sorry about your loss. Thank you for sharing this little story. Plus it's always a pleasure to see those victorian style homes in rural area. Can't imagine what your Grandma felt when she was so close to true "Giants" of Hollywood's golden era.

That’s really cool. I can’t imagine seeing people like Elizabeth Taylor or Rock Hudson in the flesh with my own two eyes…it’d be like encountering some sort of god or American royalty, which movie stars basically were back then. That’s a great memory to have. Did she see any filming being done? And was she there when No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood were filming?
