The Passion of Darkly Noon. This little-known 1995 allegorical fable, about a refugee from a religious cult (Brendan Fraser) who develops a dangerous attraction to a caring, sensual woman (Ashley Judd) after she, along with her mute boyfriend (Viggo Mortensen), takes him into her home located in the middle of a vast forest, is a supremely weird, overheated film that, with the combination of its overripe visuals, howler performances, and ludicrous “symbolism”, very easily goes off the rails. It’s Southern Gothic gone camp. And yet…I can’t help but enjoy it. The film is ludicrous, but very much a vision—that being of cult filmmaker Philip Ridley—and it admirably sticks to that outlandish vision to the defiantly strange, ridiculously operatic end. It may go off the rails, but it does so by going over the top, and while that makes the movie a failure, it also makes it interesting to watch. You wonder at the cracked gonzo sensibility of it all. It’s like a half-baked Flannery O’Connor story directed by Ken Russell. The Passion of Darkly Noon is ultimately not a good film, but there’s no other one like it, and for that reason, however ironic it may be, I cherish it.

2022-09-02 22:56:14 +0000 UTCThe Halloween series is my favorite horror franchise, even if the majority of films are awful, I will happily watch any of them. Except Rob Zombie's two entries, there is no pleasure to be gained watching them.

2022-09-01 20:30:13 +0000 UTCCheesy 80s - 90s Martial Arts flicks like the JCVD era from "Blood Sport" to "Time Cop". Steven Seagal movies from "Above the Law" ending with "Under Siege". A couple ofJeff Speakman joints, Best of the Best (and it's less classy sequel), 3 Ninjas, and anything with Bolo Yeung, Sho Kosugi, or an underground fight tournament. I'm also a sucker for 90s era low budget Black movies (that critics panned) with bomb soundtracks that I call Hood Flicks. Starting with "New Jack City" and ending sometime around "Paid in Full".

2022-09-01 15:36:10 +0000 UTCI really enjoy Cynthia Rothrock martial arts movies, especially the made-for-tv movie "Irresistible Force" (Available on YouTube). She challenges people's assumptions because as a petite woman, her martial arts choreography is a good as any, In the 1980's she was undefeated in over 100 competitive fights and holds black belts or sashes in seven different styles of Chinese and Korean self defense. In this particular movie, she plays a new officer who is partnered with a veteran played by Stacy Keach. It is a buddy cop movie with a plot that is a knock off of Die Hard. It follows the buddy cop tropes, with their relationship starting out rocky, but growing as the plot advances. The movie pokes fun at them throughout and is full of one-liners. Some of the acting is weak, but it is a lot of fun if you want to watch something escapist, and only slightly non-pc.

2022-09-01 13:53:12 +0000 UTCThe Friday the 13th franchise. I think there's only one legitimately good movie in it but I still hold a good amount of affection for the franchise and Jason as a slasher figure. Good or bad, I enjoy a lot of that series for the stupid, horny and absurd moment in horror history that it is. I also watched the entire thing over the course of a few weeks with my dad and it was a nice bonding experience for us.

2022-08-31 21:42:13 +0000 UTCAgree with all of this, but I’m not guilty at all about my love for the Room. The screenings I’ve been to are genuinely some of the most fun times I’ve had at a theater

2022-08-31 20:57:48 +0000 UTCThe Room (2003). One of the most hilariously mind blogging things ever created. Everything from the dialogue, acting, pacing, and random things that have no relevance to the story are a revelation in bad filmmaking that it's a gold mine of unintentional comedy. Highlights include the scene where the characters throw a football around in an alley while wearing tuxedos, the awkward sex scenes that take up at least 1/3 of the film, and Tommy Wiseau destroying his house at the end which was clearly inspired by Citizen Kane where Orson Welles smashes up his room. People say that there are no bad movies like it. I'd go further and say there are no good movies like The Room.

2022-08-31 20:51:04 +0000 UTCThe Fanatic (2019) directed by Fred Durst, front man for Limp Bizkit. It’s offensive, it’s nowhere near a good movie and it’s not consistently crazy enough to be so bad it’s good, but I just get such a kick out of watching John Travolta embarrass himself with that role. Mike from Redlettermedia described the movie as “Forrest Gump meets Taxi Driver” and that is so spot on. Oh and let’s not forget the part where a lead character puts on a Limp Bizkit song and goes “oooh that is nice”. Truly needs to be seen to be believed
