The Force Awakens
Added 2022-08-22 19:28:05 +0000 UTCbruh....I just watched this one a few nights ago after a long absence. I was so prepared for a better film than the prequels this time around. Wow...it was terrible. XD Way worse than the prequels, imo. My original rankings that I posted a while back of the Star Wars films...is definitely getting switched around. Once I'm done, we will have to compare and contrast.

I watched the prequels and the sequel trilogy back to back last month, and I just really disagree. The presence of Jake Lloyd AND Jar Jar alone is just unbearable and it feels like I’m watching a two and a half hour McDonalds commercial. It’s an endurance test. I think The Force Awakens is perfectly enjoyable and I think it’s way more similar to the silliness of A New Hope and Return of the Jedi

2022-08-22 23:50:55 +0000 UTCNo, I actually went in prepared to like this film. I didnt want Last Jedi or Rise of Skywalker to influence me too much at all. I hate this film, on it's own.

2022-08-22 23:50:31 +0000 UTCI recommend going back and watching. I think it's astounding just how much more dignity the prequels have compared to the new ones, and it's a dismally low bar already. And I only feel that way now...that I have gone through and watched them all very close together. It makes a world of difference. I never thought I would say this but...everything in the prequels feels more like the original Star Wars, than these new ones. Everything. And I mean that incredibly sincerely.

2022-08-22 23:49:18 +0000 UTCI’ll admit it… I have a strong bias against the prequels. They’re what killed Star Wars for me. Couple that with RLM’s legendary takedown of them and I started to believe that they were the worst things to grace the screen since…ever. I held the sequels in slightly higher esteem because, despite the fact that they were unabashed corporate product, they gave me a faint reminder of the pleasure I felt in watching the original trilogy (it also helped that I went in with low expectations and a large amount of cynicism about the whole enterprise). Gone were the staid characters dwarfed by CGI, here now were all the old familiar rhythms and feelings of the originals. Of course, I knew deep down that that was done more out of calculation than any kind of inspiration. The sequels didn’t amount to much, each film tearing down the work done by the one before it so that we see that there was never any true grand vision behind any of them. By the end of Rise of Skywalker, we see the sequels for what they truly are—not movies but…entries, installments thrown to the crowd to generate revenue. Maybe I should go back and watch the prequels and give them another chance. I might like them a little more than I thought I did. At least they’re all of one vision planned out. A failed one, but a vision nonetheless.

2022-08-22 22:19:06 +0000 UTCI really liked it in the years before Last Jedi but it's soured a lot knowing nothing setup in it means absolutely nothing. I'm sure your problems are a lot more than that so we'll be curious to hear what really turned you off to it.

2022-08-22 21:28:19 +0000 UTCFans, including me, graded it on a steep curve when it came out. It’s a New Hope remake with the legacy characters thrown in. Rey and Kylo are the best part, as they are in all the sequels, but it’s a pretty limp affair. I do think the Luke reveal makes for a strong ending, but of course, some fans were immediately soured on that by what happens in The Last Jedi. Han Solo’s death should have meant more than it does as the film plays out.

2022-08-22 19:51:12 +0000 UTCInteresting. Tbh I haven’t seen it since it came out and I remember really liking it but thinking about it now, it’s probably just fine. It sets up a couple of interesting character subversions that the later films don’t really do anything with, and it’s a really good looking movie. But it just borrows too much from A New Hope imo. I’ve ironically seen the prequels many more times and I’m very convinced that meme value and very surface level originality is all they really have. I know the sequel trilogy amounted to a giant corporate product but there are so many decisions in the prequels that feel like they were also made by a marketing team.
