definitely better for kids. Nope, I just type it out on a document super fast, therefore it can sometimes be a bit incoherent lol

Tis a good moment. There are several lovely moments like that. My personal fav is where Luke and Vader fight in the distance and you just see the silhouettes with the lightsabers clashing.

That video of Lynch talking about how he almost directed ROTJ is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. “I started getting a headache”

I think Return of the Jedi has my favorite shot in all of Star Wars, when Luke is standing in front of Darth Vader being cremated. The pain of burying an ancestor is universal however there is hope with Luke since he has broken the cycle of generational violence. That combined with the force theme is why Star Wars can still capture magic.

Agree with pretty much all of that. I’d add that my biggest issue with the film is how chaotic the third act is. A New Hope has everything build to the same climax at the Death Star, Empire primarily focuses on Luke and Vader’s confrontation. Return of the Jedi keeps cutting between 3 or 4 different sequences, when I really only care about the Luke/Vader/Emperor one. It’s quite similar to the third act of the Phantom Menace actually. I do love that final lightsaber fight though. Especially when Luke is just wailing on him right before he cuts off his arm.

I thought it came out before The Last Jedi? Or are you saying it was dead to you before that?

I think this film plays better to kids than adults, until my early teens I used to argue that this was the best film - it had the biggest space battle, it had the desert monster that killed Boba Fett and Princess Leia Killing Jabba/gold bikini (that was never a thing for me but a lot of people seem to have been affected by it), it had the speeder bike forest race/fight type scene and it had cool traps and treehouses made by evil cute bear things in a forest. But your review seems mostly on point from a more adult perspective. Out of interest - do you use some kind of Dictaphone/speech to text system to write your notes?

I agree. Definitely worked out for the best.

Would we have rather gotten Lynchs Return of the Jedi if it meant not getting his Dune? I think history worked out for the best.

You're better off Youtubing the Vader scene at the end because that's the only thing they absolutely nailed. It also directly leads into the start of A New Hope.

Agreed. But a lot of the epicn quality of everything felt slight here. It's just due to the filmmaking unfortunately.

Confession....I've never seen Rogue One! >< That came out around the time when Star Wars as a whole, was dead to me. I need to for sure.

While I'm not a fan of the franchise, my favorite thing about it is when Vader is portrayed like a horror movie monster who's scary because he's deadly powerful compared to his most skilled lackeys and even the heroes. Empire Strikes Back did that reasonably well and I was disappointed that it was dropped here. I haven't seen all of Rogue One but that Vader scene at the end is exactly how he should be done. This is a spoiler but the only other instance where they nailed it like that was his surprising and terrifying appearance at the end of the video game Jedi Fallen Order where after defeating the most powerful Imperial Inquisitor, he shows up and kills her for failing him and the objective is to just run for your life while he tears the place apart trying to get you.

I thought Vader was lit badly. He needs proper reflections to highlight his black form. Much of that detail was lost, especially in his scene with the Emperor's entrance. But the Emperor makes this film for me. Offsets some of that Ewok silliness in a darker direction.
