Favorite movie quote and why?

From "The Magnificent Ambersons": “Not a bit! There aren’t any old times. When times are gone they’re not old, they’re dead! There aren’t any times but new times!” A quote that is both in the picture and the Tarkington novel. It struck me the first time I heard as so profound that we can get caught up in nostalgia and sentiment. The story is really about a family trying to cling very hard to the past.

Atticus Xey

"They pay you to screw that bear?"

Hart

"I've been such a fool, Vassili. Man will always be a man. There is no new man. We tried so hard to create a society that was equal, where there'd be nothing to envy your neighbour. But there's always something to envy. A smile, a friendship, something you don't have and want to appropriate. In this world, even a Soviet one, there will always be rich and poor. Rich in gifts, poor in gifts. Rich in love, poor in love." I partly love this because it expresses despair so beautifully before the sufferer gets the opportunity to turn out the lights forever.

Blork Povud

“They're not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you, their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because, you see gentlemen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen, you hear it? - - Carpe - - hear it? - - Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary.” Mr Keating - Dead Poets Society. A perfect reminder of the transient nature of life and the value of living in the moment.

“It’s a good scream…good scream”- Jack in Blow Out Not only is this one of the hardest hitting endings in film history but the subtext of this line perfectly encapsulates what De Palma was trying to do with the movie as a whole. Jack is finally confronted by the brutally artificial nature of his job as a filmmaker/sound designer, as well as the fact that the brutal corruption at the core of American history has triumphed. One of my favorite examples of saying so much with so little.

Jackson Littlewood

"I flew too high on borrowed wings" from Charles Van Doren in Quiz Show. Perfectly sums up the film's themes of abusing the system for fame and fortune. It's also a double whammy because the producers who gave him his "wings" got away scot free while he took all the heat because he was the one everyone saw on the show while the producers were hiding off screen. More relevant today in the media than it's ever been. That's why crap producers still make crap shows and movies.

Wolfman Brandon

“A psychotic drowns where the mystic swims. You're drowning. I'm swimming.” - Red Miller, Mandy It just feels so cathartic and beautiful and badass when Red says it right before taking his revenge. I think about this line at least once a month because of the simple wording and Cage’s cryptic delivery. The quote also works as a reminder that Red, in his violent transformation, became the total antithesis to everything Jeremiah represented.

Jared Angcanan

“There’s no such thing as adventure, there’s no such thing as romance, there’s only trouble and desire.” - Simple Men
