Park Chan-Wook
Added 2022-04-28 22:26:33 +0000 UTCYa'll know just how much I love this guy (I hope). I have to confess....The Handmaiden had always been on my list of things to get to, and I finally got my chance recently. I was absolutely floored by it. What an extraordinary piece of filmmaking. I was absolutely buzzing with inspiration afterwards. I'm more curious about what you guys think of it than I normally am. Tell me your thoughts, especially if you've seen it multiple times. Park Chan-Wook films to me, always have a time/context perspective, that is important to experience at least twice. I plan on working on a review of it soon.

Bong Joon-Ho. Wonderful filmmaker. Check out his 2006 “The Host”. Few filmmakers can make movies so politically motivated that don’t feel preachy

However with this the storytelling is so well thought out that I loved it’s shocking twists and turns. The production design is absolutely gorgeous and I just want to live in that beautiful estate. Although I could do without its sinister residents. The novel which the film is based on is set in Victorian England. I think the change to the Japanese occupation of Korea is a great choice because there is a sense of people needing to hide their real identity in order to survive.

It's a wildly entertaining movie but also dives really deeply into themes of sexual perversion and repression. All of my favorite movies are ones that I find really fun to watch but also have plenty to chew on once I'm done watching them. And let's not kid ourselves, this movie is sexy as hell. It's sexy in just about every way film can be. To me it is an absolute masterpiece and I'm glad you finally got around to watching it
