BONUS: And Then There Were Fewer

Okay this episode ruled. It sucks that Family Guy isn't consistently this fantastic! Anyways listen to us gush about James Woods for an hour & I think Spencer says some gay shit about old movies, it's a good one

the biggest problem with the episode as a mystery story is that they didn't set up the reveal at all. we didn't know anything about the backstory to diane's motivation until she gave the monologue at the end (if it's a thread that already existed in previous episodes i don't know, i haven't seen them, but also i'm evaluating this episode as a self contained thing so it doesn't matter). a good mystery story hints at that stuff and reveals just enough that a savvy viewer could figure it out for themselves, and they just didn't do that, apart from the running theme of tom being arrogant and self obsessed, and diane being separated from him for a minute, and that's a stretch. it feels surprising when we hear about it at the end but it's just not earned because there weren't any pieces scattered throughout. not to mention diane showing lois evidence that implied she was the killer after she'd gone to such great lengths to conceal everything was incredibly stupid and out of character.

the reason this episode is better than any other family guy, and family guy couldn't be like this again is that it's basically not a family guy episode. there's almost no cutaways, the plot doesn't involve the griffins' home life at all, there's absolutely no attempt at social commentary or allegory. probably why it feels like such a breath of fresh air and an outlier. it's just a story with the family guy cast in it, it's effectively blue harvest but just not based on a specific movie.
