You don't need to watch anything I'm between. If you want to, I'd recommend Ilse's Notebook only (and the YouTube video AOT in 9 minutes which just a STAPLE in all the reaction channels Ive seen xd)

Ilse's notebook. Definitely watch it. It gives some needed information to let a reveal in season 2 more impactful. As some other people said, there is another OVA called No regrets, but that's for during S3

The only OVA you should watch before S2 is Ilse's Notebook. This is actually based on canon content from the manga by the original author (Isayama) Besides that, the only other OVA you should consider is No Regrets 1 and 2, which you should only dive in either before S3 Part 1 or before S3 Part 2, so that's later down the line No need to check any other OVA! The two listed are the only ones considered canon to the anime and they genuinely do add to the viewing experience rather than simply complementing them. Like, I'd sincerely doubt you'd regret (heh) allocating time for them during those suggested periods

I would watch the OVAs when you finish the show or maybe after season 3 if you want to take a break. They're not necessary.

I would say watch the OVA's after the whole show. First because it can be nice to revisit the older times when you've watched it all. But some of the OVA's especially the notebook one and the Mikasa last one have some future foreshadowing that at least give you a big hint of what's to come so I'm glad I watched them after the show

I'd honestly prefer you jump right in to season 2, arguably the best season.

With there being so many different opinions on this, maybe we should try to find a compromise here. With the decision ultimately being up to Jon of course, maybe the compromise here is to watch the OVAs as a seperate season. Maybe after S3 or even at the end. That is probably more simple for Jon as well. Like this if you agree.

I really don't think any of the OVAs are necessary - nor are all of them canon as the majority were handed off to a different author. They are enjoyable though, and if you're looking for some backstory on already established characters, No Regrets is the only one you need really. Don't overwhelm yourself

For me it would be: 1. Ova no regrets part 1 and 2. 2. Season 2 ep 1. 3. Ova ilses notebook. 4. Season 2 onwards. I think this is the best placement for certain shocking moments especially the season 2 ep 1 and ilses notebook ova
