Ch: 5 [First Quest]
Added 2023-07-17 11:26:33 +0000 UTCAfter changing into a more practical outfit and equipping myself with the necessary supplies, I step out of the vault once again, prepared to face the dangers of the post-apocalyptic wasteland. The world outside is harsh and unforgiving, filled with unknown threats and treacherous landscapes.
I survey the surroundings, taking in the devastated landscape and remnants of a once-thriving civilization. Crumbling buildings, overturned vehicles, and scattered debris serve as reminders of the world that existed before the nuclear devastation.
My immediate priority is to gather information about the current state of affairs and locate nearby settlements or factions that might offer some form of stability and support. With that in mind, I begin to explore the area surrounding the vault, treading cautiously through the ruins.
As I navigate through the desolate landscape, I encounter remnants of mutated creatures, some hostile and others seemingly docile. I proceed with caution, utilizing my knowledge from the Fallout games to assess the threats and determine the best course of action.
While the wasteland is filled with danger, it's also brimming with opportunities. Salvageable resources, hidden caches, and valuable artifacts can be found amidst the ruins, providing a means of survival and potential trade in this chaotic world.
As I venture further, I notice a faint wisp of smoke rising in the distance. Intrigued, I follow the trail, hoping that it may lead me to a settlement or a group of survivors. After walking for a while, I arrive at a small encampment nestled within the remains of a pre-war town.
The settlement consists of makeshift shelters constructed from salvaged materials, and a small community of survivors bustling with activity. They seem to be going about their daily routines, tending to crops, repairing equipment, and fortifying their defenses.
With cautious optimism, I approach the settlement, keeping my guard up in case of any potential hostility. As I draw near, a sentry spots me and raises a weapon, their eyes filled with suspicion.
"Hold it right there! Who are you, and what business do you have here?" the sentry demands, their voice laced with caution.
I raise my hands in a non-threatening gesture, speaking calmly. "Wow! There... there's no need to get hostile. My name is John. I'm new here, so I was wondering if you can share some infos about the settlement?"
I don't want to appear threatening, but I also don't want to be shot on sight.
The sentry stares at me for a moment before lowering his weapon. "Alright. I guess we don't have to shoot you right away," he says, before adding, "You seem pretty levelheaded, so maybe you can help me out with a small task and in return, I will give you your information."
I nod in agreement, "Alright. What do you need?"
The sentry motions for me to follow him into the settlement. "This way, I will explain what you need to do."
The settlement is surprisingly well-fortified, with sturdy walls constructed from stone and concrete, and a large gate that serves as its entryway.
Within the settlement, I can see rows of tents and shacks, filled with people of all ages and ethnicities. They seem to be going about their daily lives, tending to crops, repairing equipment, and fortifying their defenses.
As I walk through the settlement, I can hear the voice of the sentry behind me. "Okay, we are almost there, but first, I must introduce you to our leader."
The leader of the settlement turns out to be an elderly woman who seems to be in charge of overseeing the daily operations of the settlement. She has a stern expression on her face and speaks in a stern tone.
"Max, you know, it's forbidden to bring outsiders into the settlement," The elderly woman says, a stern look on her face. "And what if he is an assassin or a raider? He could be here to hurt us."
The sentry, whom I now know as Max, shakes his head. "Oh, don't be dramatic, granny. What can he do alone, huh? We can take care of him if it comes to that. Besides, he might be able to help us with the problem."
The elderly woman, whom I now know as Granny, sighs and rolls her eyes, muttering under her breath, "If you say so... If things get out of hand, I will shoot you first then the outsider." She left the room after the warning.
"Whatever you say, granny," Max says before turning to me. She is our leader. She may be a gruff but she keeps things running."
"So, what's this job that I have to do for you?" I ask.
Max nods. "Well, there is a problem here in our settlement. As you can see, we have a small community, but there is a larger settlement not too far from here. They are neighbors, and as neighbors, they need to get along."
Max continues, "Last night, they tried to steal from our barn after one of our turrets went down. Granny was very angry about that. She wants to make sure that nothing happens again."
I nod. "So what do you want me to do? Do you want me to go over and talk to them?"
Max nods. "Yeah, that's it. I need you to go over there and convince them to stop stealing our stuff. Tell them that if they continue to do so, then we will have no choice but to fight back."
"And you think you can win against a large settlement? That's just outright stupid," I say with a frown.
Max frowns. "Look, it's our only option. They won't listen to us. So, what do you say? Will you help us or not?"
"I have got a better option," I said as I opened my backpack and took out a couple of land mines.
"Wait! Those are high-grade mines! How did you get them?" Max said, a look of shock on his face.
"That doesn't matter. Spread them out around the barn. Since they failed last time, they will definitely come tonight to steal the crops again."
Max shakes his head. "And they will get blown up..."
"Not they, thief, yeah? Thieves will get blown up, so, the large settlement won't be able to blame you, yeah? So, that is the perfect plan. No one gets hurt, except for the thieves," I said with a grin.
Max smiles. "Well, you got me there, but... um... are you sure this will work? I mean, won't they try to get back at us?"
I shrug. "No idea, but we'll see, yeah?"
*Charisma*
Max chuckles. "Alright, I guess we'll try it."
With Max on board, we quickly set our plan into motion. We carefully place the landmines around the barn, ensuring that they are well-hidden but strategically positioned to deter any potential thieves.
As night falls, we take up positions near the barn, ready to confront the intruders. The settlement remains on high alert, with Granny watching from a safe distance to ensure the safety of her people.
After what feels like an eternity of waiting, we finally hear the telltale signs of movement. The sound of footsteps approaching and whispered voices signal the arrival of the thieves.
Max and I remain hidden, our hearts pounding with anticipation. We watch as a group of individuals cautiously makes their way toward the barn, unaware of the deadly surprise awaiting them.
Just as they reach the vicinity of the barn, a loud explosion shatters the silence of the night. The landmines detonate, engulfing the area in a fiery blaze. The thieves are caught off guard, their screams mingling with the chaos.
In the aftermath of the explosion, we cautiously approach the scene. The thieves lie motionless, their bodies mangled by the blast. It's clear that they won't be causing any more trouble for our settlement.
Max and I exchange glances, a mix of relief and satisfaction evident on our faces. The plan worked, and we successfully protected our resources without directly engaging in a violent confrontation.
Returning to the settlement, we inform Granny of what transpired. She listens intently, her stern expression softening slightly as she takes in the news.
"You did well, outsider," Granny says, her voice laced with grudging admiration. "You have proven yourself capable, and we can't deny that you saved us from further trouble. They won't be able to blame us for their people's death."
