“What? How is this possible?” my grandfather asked, surprised to see that Sola and Tully were awake and their skin was no longer green.
“Does it matter? Sola and Tully can come with us now~!” I yelled happily, embracing them.
“This just doesn’t make sense. Was there a delayed reaction or something? But this had never happened before. …I shouldn’t question this, should I?”
Seeing the smile on my face was more than enough to give him the answer he was looking for. So long as I was happy, that was all that mattered to him.
“Yes, they can come with us, but this is nothing more than a miracle.”
A miracle that happened yesterday.
“Well, with that, you should have no problem bringing your friends along with you to the capital,” Bel said to me outside in the rose garden. “You know, you should have told me beforehand that you were moving to the capital. My father has business there.”
“He does? But you’re a monster, right?”
“Me? A monster? Pfft~! Let’s just say that I’m something similar,” she said back to me in a cryptic way.
I didn’t quite understand what she meant, but at least I knew that this wasn’t going to be the last time that I was going to see her.
“And a fifth birthday coming up. I’ll have to attend that as well.”
“You can?”
Wouldn’t the horns and the tail stand out too much?
“Of course, I can just watch.”
A bright light appeared around her body, and seconds later, her horns and tail disappeared. It was amazing. I wouldn’t have even known that something was wrong if I had seen her like this when we first met.
“Woah, where did they go?”
“There still there, but I used magic to make them invisible,” she said, bragging a bit, but who could blame her? She was amazing. “I learned this when I was seven.”
Seven? She must be some sort of genius!
“How… how old are you?”
Was she actually a child like me, or was she a species of monster that ages slower?
“Your big sister is a whopping nine years old!”
Nine? She looked older. Should I be saying that? If she could hear me, she would probably be upset to hear me call her old.
“Your big sister is amazing, and maybe one day I can show you a thing or two.”
“Hehehe~. I would like that, but I can’t.”
I had barely any mana. There was no way that I could use magic. It was a nice thought, but that was all it could be, just a thought.
“Hmm~. We’ll see about that. But I better get going before anyone sees me. I’ll be sure to see you in the capital. Until then, continue being cute,” she said, kissing me on the forehead before flying away, leaving me with many questions.
“Ill…Illya? Are you alright?” my grandfather asked me, snapping me out of my daydreaming.
“I’m fine~!” I happily said back to him.
“Hmm~. Are you certain? Your face is bright red.”
Bright red? …No! Why did I have to be embarrassed by a little kiss? I know it’s technically the first time that I’ve been kissed by a girl, but she only did it to mess with me.
“I’m fine. I wanna see Auntie Sara,” I said, trying to change the subject.
“Your aunt is dealing with a sensitive subject right now, one of which that she caused herself. We should leave her alone for now.”
“No. I wanna see her.”
I know that I was acting like a brat, but I knew who my aunt was with right now. I saw him meet with her from my bedroom window, and I didn’t want to miss my chance.
“Illya, no. The arch-priest is not someone that you should get close to.
What? How did he know what I was planning? All I wanted to do was ask the arch-priest about my condition. It couldn’t be that dangerous, now could it?
“Illya, the church is very dangerous. Last time your aunt brought them here because she thought that there was no other choice.”
“Did I do something wrong?”
I didn’t understand. Yeah, last time, the arch-priest did creep me out, but they did try to help. Was it because I’m a monster? Will the church try to kill me if they find out?
“No, no, no, you did nothing wrong,” he said, picking me up in my arms. “The church… hmm~. How to explain this to a child? …The church is filled with bad men. They act nice but are worse than monsters. They believe in their faith too much that it hurts people. Do you understand?”
“Yes, I think so.”
So the church was a group of religious zealots. My near lack of mana must intrigue their faith.
“Good, now let’s go back to your room; we should pick out what to bring to the capital, now, shouldn’t we? Or if you would like, we could just take everything?”
“No! I’ll pick!” I yelled, embarrassed by his offer.
Grandfather always went above and beyond. when it came to doing things for me, and I didn’t want to make anything more complicated than it had to be.
“If you would like, perhaps I could offer my assistance?”
“Auntie Sara!”
I practically jumped out of my grandfather’s arms and into hers the moment I saw her.
“You dealt with him faster than I thought. What did he want this time?” my grandfather asked her.
“Nothing much. He wanted to see Illya and give her an amulet provided by the church. I didn’t even humor it before forcing him out, but he is a persistent one. Once we get to the capital, his influence will only grow.”
“That is a problem that can be easily remedied.
“Nggh! I’m still here!” I yelled, mad that they were talking as if I wasn’t there.
“Sorry, sweetie. Auntie is sorry. How about I make it up to you by helping you pack? Don’t you think I would be a better choice than some old man?”
“Yes~!” I yelled happily, clinging to her.
“Hehe~. To bad uncle, it looks like Illya has made her decision.”
“Hmph! Enjoy it while it lasts. When she sees her birthday present, there is no doubt that I’ll be the one she’s clinging to,” he said, walking away, most likely to make sure that the arch-priest was gone.
Once we were in my room, we began to start packing with the help of Sola and Tully.
“Oh, this dress is adorable. We just have to take it,” Auntie Sara said, placing yet another dress in my trunk. “Hmm~. Though I wonder if we should just throw these out and buy you brand new dresses. What… what do… y-you… thi….”
“Auntie Sara?”
For some reason, Auntie Sara, Sola, and Tully had fallen asleep. It was so sudden that I couldn’t help but think that it was unnatural. I tried to wake them up, but my efforts were in vain.
“Wow, talk about enjoying the perks of having money. To think that I left this life behind.”
“It’s you!” I yelled, watching Lilith Haze step out from the shadows, holding one of my dresses.
“Yes, it is me, and may I say you are still as adorable as the day we first met. I have to say, your aunt sure does know how to pick a dress. It’s almost as if it was made for you.”
“And you look the same.”
She hadn’t aged a day. Even the way she was dressed was exactly the same as I remembered.
“Thank you~. Magic certainly works wonders on the skin. Speaking of skin, I can see that the three of you have stopped using my potion, but your skin still isn’t green, interesting.”
Interesting? That could have killed us. This woman was clearly insane. No wonder grandfather didn’t like her.
“You might not remember, but I can still hear your thoughts, and I’m hurt that you would call me insane,” she said, kneeling down close to me and placing her fingers under my chin.
“W-why… why are you here?”
There had to be a reason why she was here. If not, there was no reason to use her magic to put Auntie Sara and the others to sleep.
“It’s a shame that you want to get to the point of everything instead of talking with me, but I do like your eagerness to get answers. It reminds me of myself.”
Lilith sat down on my bed, urging me to follow after her.
“Originally, my visit here was nothing more than to offer you a new place to call home and cash in on my investment, but as of now, I can’t do that. You’ve already been claimed.”
“I will never leave my family to be with you,” I said to her. I would not let her use me again.
“Not exactly what I was referring to, but you’ll realize that in time.”
“Hmm?”
What was she talking about?
“It’s fine. That is not something that you should be focusing on right now. You should be focusing on what I can do for you.”
“What?”
“I recently heard that your birthday is coming up, and I wanted to do something nice and give you a gift. Though given your let’s say “allergy” to magic giving you a gift is tricky.”
“You wanna give me a gift?”
This was strange. Why would she want to give me a present?
“Don’t worry, I don’t have any underlying reasoning for doing this. I just feel that it is something I owe you is all. After all, given our relationship, it is only reasonable for me to grant you a gift.”
“Alright?”
Are only connection was the potion that she made for me. I don’t really think that there was a reason to receive a gift from her.
“There is no need to be so tense. I already know that there is no practical physical object that I can give you. But there is something I can do, and that is information. Or, to be more precise, a warning.”
“A warning?”
How does a warning constitute as a gift?
“Don’t worry, when the time comes, this will be a very good gift. Don’t eat the cookies.”
“Cookies? What does that mean?”
“Huh? Illya, are you feeling hungry already?” Auntie Sara asked, watching up to my surprise.
When I looked back Lilith was gone. How did she do that?
“Fine, I’m feeling a bit hungry myself. Come on, let’s eat and get back to packing because before you know it, we’ll be in the capital!”
