You're right of course but then it would have gained back probably 2 of the 6 inches it was shortened by. Would all this be worth a net decrease of only 4 inches?

I cannot tell you how may disagreements(?) I've had with guys at gun shows back in the day swearing that the "Tanker" M1 they were trying to sell was a legit late WWII issue weapon. Very frustrating. But, as you say, they are really cool!
