Sorry for the SUPER long comment!
We're All In This Together, Stick To The Status Quo & Breaking Free are my favourite songs, but the first is kind of the unofficial theme song of the series 👌🏻 And I prefer Troy & Gabriella's version of What I Was Looking For but Sharpay & Ryan's is a bop (pun intended). I actually used to think Ashley Tisdale's voice was kind of annoying so I didn't really like it 😂 Also, it always weirded me out that they are siblings playing lovers in the musicale! But one thing I appreciate much more about these movies as I'm older is how they show how sports are held to a different standard than literally anything else. Not to mention the overarching message that people shouldn't be put in boxes and expected to do just one thing their entire lives. We are complex and multifaceted and we like several different things. But for the captain of the basketball team to do musical theatre, especially back in 2006, in their eyes it emasculated him because it was/is considered "feminine" and "gay". So contrary to what people might believe, it really has nothing to do with him not being focused or not being a good friend. THEY were being bad friends and extremely narrowminded.
Fun facts: The idea for the movie came in 1999, which was originally titled Grease 3 (a sequel to the first one) and was supposed to star Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake as the children of Danny and Sandy. The plot was virtually the same as HSM but with more similarities to Grease. Sharpay was supposed to be Rizzo's daughter (producers tried to get Christina Aguilera for the part but she declined). Justin Timberlake's band mates from NSYNC were supposed to have supporting roles and John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John to possibly have cameos. The project eventually became High School Musical and not related to Grease at all. The first two were Disney Channel originals but the 3rd was released in theatres and had a bigger budget, so you might notice a difference in quality. There were rumours of a 4th movie for the longest time but nothing ever came of it. There is, however, a spin-off TV movie called Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure. Austin Butler (Elvis, Dune 2, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) plays Sharpay's love interest. He and Vanessa actually dated for about 10 years after Ashley introduced them. There is also a TV series called High School Musical: The Musical: The Series which lasted 4 seasons, from 2019-2023, and stars Olivia Rodrigo (who's become a very successful singer/songwriter since).
Zac does sing a little bit in this movie. Before he was cast, the role of Troy was written for a tenor and he, who himself is a baritone, could not properly sing most of the parts (his voice is deeper than what the character was supposed to sound like). Singer-songwriter and actor Drew Seeley, who also auditioned for the role and co-wrote Get'cha Head in the Game, provided majority of the character's singing voice, with Zac singing the first and last few lines in Start of Something New, the beginning of Breaking Free and during the scene on the balcony. However, Zac did all of his own singing in the sequels, since all the music in those were tailored specifically for his voice. Zac would have joined the tour if he had not been busy filming Hairspray (which he sang in), so Drew filled in for him. Also, apparently they were interchanging Vanessa's voice with someone else's in When There Was Me And You (and possibly other songs) which is why the lower parts sound weird. They tried to change it to sound more like Vanessa's voice but it didn't really work 😂
Zac and Vanessa were partnered up during the auditioning process due to their chemistry. No surprise since they dated for 4 years, from 2006-2010. Lucas Grabeel (Ryan) originally auditioned to play Troy while Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay) and Monique Coleman (Taylor) originally auditioned to play Gabriella. Monique almost quit acting right before she booked the role. At the callback, Lucas and Ashley auditioned together. They did not get along, they talked about it in a video on Ashley's YouTube channel when they got together to do What I Was Looking For. Ashley admitted that she was a lot like her character back then. Now they are close friends. Btw, Ashley and Vanessa also did a cover of Elle King's Exes and Ohs. Lastly, Naya Rivera, who went on to play Santana Lopez on Glee, also auditioned for the role of Gabriella.
Kenny Ortega, who directed and co-choreographed the movies, also did Newsies, Dirty Dancing, Xanadu, Hocus Pocus, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Cheetah Girls 2 & the first 3 Descendants movies, as well as producing the series Julie and the Phantoms on Netflix (which was cancelled after only 1 season). He has also worked on multiple music videos & produced concert tours for the likes of KISS, Olivia Newton-John, Cher, Madonna, Miley Cyrus & Michael Jackson. He was supposed to direct and choreograph Michael's This Is It concert tour before he died in 2009. He ended up directing the concert movie which was put together from rehearsal footage. He also served as the director of his memorial. Through Kenny, Michael actually called Zac to tell him he enjoyed his work in HSM. Zac broke out in tears during the call. He's told the story in a couple of interviews, including Graham Norton Show: https://youtu.be/kGOD270UO2E?si=LbI4jh9RKaMcDpXO and Queen Latifah's talk show: https://youtu.be/jO2HEVc5iK4?si=yrrlscwIPOmZtsag.
Ryan was originally written to be gay. Lucas Grabeel (who is a gem) asked director Kenny Ortega about Ryan's sexuality very early on and they agreed Ryan should be gay. Kenny even confirmed it in an interview and Lucas apparently pushed for Ryan to come out as gay in the movie series. However, Disney wouldn't allow it in a "family movie". Kenny later stated that he believed Ryan would eventually come out while in college. The matter is never addressed until the TV series, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, where he is seen kissing and presumably in a relationship with a character played by Pentatonix's Scott Hoying.
The soundtrack was the best selling album of 2006, with 3.7 million copies sold in the US and 7 million worldwide. It was also the first-ever TV movie soundtrack to hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200, with a few songs charting on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition, they took home a Billboard Music Award. HSM has also had several stage productions, mostly school productions. Here’s a deleted song from the movie called I Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You: https://youtu.be/-uW50Csw53M?si=qfMe6c7fQAyPfkcf. It is on the soundtrack and they did a video of them recording it (funniest thing is that Zac is actually singing with them!). Lucas (Ryan) shines in that song so it's a shame it was cut.
In the US, the premiere generated 7.7 million viewers, breaking the then-record for the highest premiere for Disney Channel. The movie won two Emmy Awards; for Outstanding Choreography and Oustanding Children's Program.
When they showed the movie on Disney Channel, they would do segments during commercial breaks where they would have the cast teaching you the dance moves. Co-choreographer Charles Kaplow appears as a basketball player in the movie (he is in almost every dance number in all 3 movies).
Corbin Bleu came up with the catchy and funny T-shirt phrases that Chad wore in the movie. He also chose Chad's basketball jersey number (he picked No. 8 because it's his favourite number). Btw, he is still acting and he made his West End debut in The Great Gatsby in April 2025 (which is playing a limited run through Sep 7th). He also married his longtime girlfriend in July 2016 😉 Troy's red and white shirt appears in all three movies.
The movie is mostly filmed in Utah. The school used in the movie is actually called East High School and is in Salt Lake City, Utah. There are HSM tours every week day. Random fact: Elizabeth Smart, kidnapping survivor and activist, went to the school. She graduated around the time this was filmed.
Another random fact: Bart Johnson (Coach Bolton) is married to actress Robyn Lively, who is Blake Lively's sister.
Lastly, I recommend Hairspray & The Greatest Showman with Zac (if you haven't seen them). His voice has evolved so much and he's honestly a very underrated singer AND actor.

As a millenial, I purposefully did not watched this movie because everyone else was doing it. I will say it was definitely very cheesy but also pretty entertaining. Wish we could've heard a pack quartet 😋💚🩵💜 Thanks guys

Getting older is realizing I might actually be the drama teacher Ms Darbus. She is everything!
