The other part of the issue that I think all three guys missed is that Penelope is not putting out an issue because she misses it, Eloise is worried that she because she ended her friendship with Cressida, Cressida will use her next issue to disparage the family. Like she’s literally going to publish again because they now need to discredit Cressida to protect Colin and his family’s reputation. Eloise assumed that Cressida could never write anything convincing, only now she has and has promised a full issue, meaning that Peneloise just accidentally gave one of the cruelest, most vindictive woman in the ton almost as much power as the Queen. Like that’s dangerous.

Also, the reading of the banns is a church thing. The reason it didn't happen in other seasons was because people had to get married quickly and so got special licences from the Queen (although I'd guess Anthony and Kate likely had banns read off screen). If anyone knew Colin and Pen had already slept together they'd be married already, again with no time for banns!

Listened to your discussion after watching the full length. Valid points made by all but Blake is missing the point that women in that time can't just pick up and start a career. Pen can't just say, I want to write and publish, as she has no history in it and is a woman. It would not be proper. As Portia says women don't have dreams. The men get the dreams and the women get nothing of their own, which means if you don't even marry for love, their lives were awful. Giving up Whistledown is giving up something that's hers and she has built. Stopping would be one thing, but letting your bully, who has tormented you for years, take the credit? No thanks! Igli understood this best. Also, yes Pen should have told Colin and she did try, but they are barely alone and she's scared she'll lose him, but she should have done it, although I don't agree with Blake she should've done it 2 seasons ago. Why? Colin was simply her friend then. Telling him as her fiance is very different to that.

I love Polly Walker so much, but even after this entire season cannot even eke out the tiniest bit of like for Portia, she was emotionally abusive toward Pen for 20 years, no growth that can be had in mere months can fix that. I know she had a tough life, but that is no reason why she favored two of her daughters and disparaged Pen at every opportunity her entire life up until the moment she snagged a Bridgerton.

Portia is definitely controversial, but you have to admit she’s one of the most entertaining characters on the show. She also needs to be given credit, she lives in a time when men had all the power and she had a useless husband and three daughters. She’s done well for herself, clawing her way out of scandal each season and she not only secured happy matches for her two eldest daughters, Penelope secured a love match with a wealthy influential family. To Portia’s credit, she’s not jealous of her daughters’ successes, she’s genuinely happy for all three of them.

For real! It is her own empire she built brick by brick. You couldn’t be a girl boss back then unfortunately, so for Pen to have to give that up, her own dream just to do nothing the rest of her life and watch Colin post his manuscripts with his name attached as he pleases is crazy. She’s recognised he can write more constructively now as well.

Portia Featherington is probably my 2nd or 3rd favourite character on the show. She’s just so wonderfully complex. The “Ladies do not have dreams. They have husbands.” scene is one of my favourites of the whole show. It’s a reality check because the truth is, the Bridgertons really are the lucky few.

If I were Penelope I wouldn’t give up the column either. The hard work it takes to become a successful published writer is no joke, let alone a woman of that time. I couldn’t let anyone take credit for that talk less of my worst enemy, absolutely not.
