I really love this storyline for Stefan because it’s the first time we get to explore the complexities of his character and Paul Wesley is such a fascinating actor to watch. His performance really makes us as fans feel disappointed in Stefan (because we KNOW he’s better than this) but simultaneously feel empathetic towards him because this is ultimately the story of a person struggling with addiction. It’s heartbreaking to watch because Stefan to his core is a very compassionate character. Elena knows this, too, which is why she refuses to give up on him. Honestly, that’s just something they continuously do for each other - it’s one of my favourite things about their relationship.
