Not the strongest joke, in execution, but I think conceptually it's pretty funny. Maybe would work better acted out?
Obviously, the joke is based off the tedious refrain"what were they smoking when they came up with this!?" or "whoa... they must have been smoking weed when they came up with this!" everytime some unfunny dunderhead sees a cartoon with like, a talking dog or something. The simpsons probably nailed the joke the best; "we were eating rotisserie chicken."
Hieronomyous Bosch is a fascinating figure, of course, even with my limited knowledge of his work. In a world where literally everyone was just doing dry-ass bible fanfic, he (and also Bruegel kinda) just says "hey, check this out." and conjures some wild shit. Bosch paintings were kind of the adult swim cartoon of the era.
It's a shame the Bosch aesthetic never really stayed in popular culture the same way the lovecraftian aesthetic did, for example. People are still paying tribute to lovecraft and iterating on his iconic cosmic weird-horror aesthetic in new and eerie ways, but the sheer madness of the Bosch aesthetic, despite being wholly unique, has basically been left behind. I'd love to see a doom-styled game take place in a Boschian version of hell, complete with painterly graphics and weird trumpet-weaponry. It could be like the european peasant version of steampunk. Eh... maybe that description doesn't do it justice. Will I do something with this aesthetic myself? Hmm... just wait and see...
