Math Rock

I've never really been impressed by 'technically' impressive bands. I used to hang out with a lot of people from the Berklee College of Music here in Boston, and they would always be playing these bands with godawful names like 'Snarky Puppy' or 'Hiatus Coyote' and talk about how the polyrhythms or some shit. Awful. Unlistenable. Utterly devoid of meaning or feeling. The name alone should give that fact away!
The two artists in the second panel are meant to be American Football (who I like!) and Jay Reatard, respectively. JR is a man who is basically totally genuine with his music-- he is a super angry, pissy dumb guy, who makes really awesome songs about being angry, alienated, and psychotic, without elegance or minced words. 'Blood visions' is one of my favorite albums of all time, and the ultimate red-flag of an album, if you were a young woman trying to date Jay; almost every song is about how unstable he is, or about stalking and killing some unknown figure (presumed female). Still, it's a fantastic album! Rest in peace, you psycho.
