Falling into despair over his repeated failures, Rintaro is approached by Kurisu, who gets him to reveal his situation and gives him key trigger phrases to get her past self to cooperate with him.

In the visual novel, Okabe tries to save mayuri over 450 times on his own IIRC, and in i'm pretty sure even if she doesn't die a violent death, she has a heart attack and dies at the same time anyways (like in the show when she died from the subway). So her death is like a convergence point for all the different timelines of this "rope" of timelines, and okabe must somehow get to a new "rope" (atleast that's how I understood it). I kind of forgot about the convergence meter, but it SEEMS to me (I don't know if this is true or not) that it's a bootstrap paradox (a thing with no start/endpoint) because suzuha shows it to Okabe of this time, maybe okabe could only built it in the future because it came to him from the future already?^^
