Rotten luck with artbooks. :( Some help needed, if you can!

I had barely finished writing my t-shirt post yesterday when the postman rang (once), to say he had eight packages for me. Oh my!!! He carried them all inside (they are beastly heavy - we're talking 500 pounds altogether), and I opened the first to look at my new artbook.

And went about as pale as the book I was holding.

You know, I have worked with this printer for five years. They printed Cannae, in all versions and editions, and they printed my last artbook as well as all my calendars. I have had bad luck with them for prints once in the past, but that was with a paper finish that was just not suited to my work. I thought I'd be fine if I used the same paper and finish I had used since 2014, and thought I didn't need to invest in a trial copy.

Well, what do I know. I now have 250 books that I will never, ever sell or even give away. :( Some images even look nice in that pastel way, but it's simply not what I want to showcase my work with.

What does that mean?

First, it means the artbooks will take some more time, but they ought to be there by Christmas. I have ordered a trial copy with a different printer, which I have used for banners and stickers before, and which are much better to work with. (The printer that botched this one is located in Schwaben. Schwaben, for the non-Germans, is proverbial for its stinginess. Those jokes you tell about Scotsmen in the rest of the world? In Germany, they are Schwaben jokes. That means they do very affordable things, but won't budge an inch when they send you rotten work. Technically, yes, it's my fault for not getting a trial copy, but other printers would still be more helpful. So I'm not expecting them to refund me anything.)

Secondly, that means I just don't have the money right now to do the calendars for the Celebration tier - BUT I will have it next month. No matter what. The calendars will then be sent to you in the Celebration tier around early November, which means they will still be well in time for the new year.

Thirdly, any help at all would be hugely appreciated. Your patronage already means that losing a four-digit sum for crappy books is painful but not life-threatening, and I'm incredibly glad for that. If any of you feel you can help out a little more than you do already - and a lot of you already do - let's make it official! I've made a new tier called "A friend in need". I will create a new painting just for you, and each of you in that tier will get an A4 size print of it in November, together with your postcard calendar. It will be an exclusive print that will never be available to anyone but you.

Oh that's so awful! I've upped my pledge and I'm still happy to wait as long as you need in order to get the best quality to showcase your work as you want it to be :) :)

Evelyn Maire

Yes, exactly! The calendar will be a special offer again, avaiable to both the Celebration and Friend tier. :)

Oh I’m so very sorry they turned out this way! Jenny I can help for a little while at that level. Do I choose it instead of my current tier?

PL

I think that would work! If you click the link to the new tier, it should take you there, with the option to edit the amount as well. Thank you so, so much!

Jenny Dolfen

Oh Jenny, that is so awful!! I'm so sorry. I have a question for you. How does this new tier work for those of us who pledge more than ten dollars a month already? Do I cancel the old tier and join the new one and pledge what I've been pledging?

Vivienne E Collins

The current amount is only for one or two month, then I will go down a bit again. But probably still more than before.

Maksâtan

Oh, that's really bad luck. I wish you all the best with the new printer. Of course I will add a bit to my support for some time.

Maksâtan

And it's so way off from their usual quality. I hope they'll at least give me a partial refund. I'll keep you all updated!

As I just said to Annapurna - it's one of those printers that offers all sorts of options in a rolldown menu, and if you don't choose them, they will say, well, tough luck. And they're right, to some degree. I just thought that the same paper and finish would be a calculable risk. :/

Aw, thank you so much! You can either join the tier for a limited time (which is always an option anyway), or, if you prefer, you can donate to paypal.me/jennydolfenart . <3 <3

How can I help with a one time donation?

Annapurna

I can definitely relate to your feelings if devastation. I have gone through similar experiences with books. It is not easy to get good quality reproductions in books. The extra money to get proof of the artwork before printing is definitely worth it. Perhaps even have some kind of written contract in the future. There are so many considerations in making an art book because of the reproduction quality. I will make an art book as well beginning in a few months. Again Jenny, I am so sorry for this to happen to you. I definitely will chip in something to help. ❤️

Annapurna

I'm so sorry to hear that, Jenny. What a mess. -.- I really can't imagine how they even dare not to think about refunding you. Isn't the law on your side? They after all didn't deliver the quality agreed upon. But I guess they do what so many companies do - speculating that you won't have the nerves and money to sue them. Shame on them. I increased my pledge to help you at least a bit. ... Taking Fingon as an avatar for that tier is just such a fitting choice. <3

Anjuschka

God, this is so beyond infuriating and I can only guess how frustrating it must be for you. Please don't let this get you down too much. It's "just" a print process gone wrong. But they should definitely give you some refund considering the print doesn't match the picture at all and it's their job to make sure it does!

Ninchen

Oh no! That is dreadful news. I'm so sorry to hear that. I can't imagine how frustrated you must be! I've upgraded my tier; it may be temporary, but I hope it helps! Your work and effort is worth it! Let's definitely hope you can work out something with that print company. Please do take care!

Oh no Jenny, that's terrible D= That's going to be a massive pain to sort, I can guess. Oh dear.
