Shardplate badger for David (and opaque ramblings)

Commission for David, which was an utter joy. I had so much fun with this lil guy!

ShinHan Pass hybrid watercolour/gouache on Canson Montval paper, A4 size. I'm on a mission to get into opaque watercolours. They seem like the best thing that’s currently happening to my way of painting. Handle like watercolours, don't dissolve when you add layers, look creamy and opaque like gouache, but can be used transparently. So really versatile, the best of all worlds!

And about time, too! It seems to me MaketheKholinBoysHappy week, so I’ll oblige. I toed around this one for ages, and now gave it a go with the Shinhan Pass hybrid gouache/watercolours. And they're so fun!

They dry really fast, have this soft, creamy look, but can be layered and glazed like watercolour. I'm liking them a lot more than I thought I would! And I actually find it less hard to ease into a new medium than to try and pick up the thread of an old one (watercolour) whose accu...

Badger in Shardplate

Sketch for a commission for David (nicknamed Badger)! I love this guy. He'd be such a perfect fit for the D&D Humblewood setting that we're currently playing. (And I still haven’t drawn my mouse barbarian!)

I’ll finish him in a week or so; first, I’m off to my parents for a few days and if I have time (and the nerve…) to draw on the train, I’ll continue with Shallan and Adolin. Or maybe not, as that would scandalise my son who's travelling with me. 🤭

Thranduil Nouveau, watercolour

Here he is in all his glory! Watercolour and gouache (and some ShinHan Pass hybrids) on Montval paper, 29x39 cm. It’s weird how a few years of digital and a month of gouache have rewired my watercolour brain. 😳 I somehow was under the impression I'd just go back to how I used to paint, but of course, I should know that art never works that way. It evolves, and that's the weird thing, even while you’re not doing it at all.

Thranduil Nouveau - lineart

Lineart for the Elvenking in all his Art Nouveau splendour, for Is! I made ANOTHER lineart brush, and because I never write down what brush I used for what lineart, I just named this one "Thranduil liner" because it rocks. Kaladin’s eyes snapped open - comic page "inked"

I'm sorry for the long silence here! It's been a rough few weeks. I don’t weather conventions as well as I used to, it appears, and I had very little to show from Tolkien Tage. I did a few sketches but sold most of them before I could photograph them, lol.

I was working on one more finished watercolour portrait of Jasnah, which was hard enough because it was so hot that my paint dried within seconds. I do like it though, even with the water lines.

I'm opening Fanart commissions again for a few slots over the summer. Please note: I'll select the ones that speak to me the most, so this is not a first-come-first-serve situation. Six fanarts complete: Rua!

This took a while, whew! The actual painting probably went quicker than digital would have, but working traditionally isn’t quite as versatile. (And we have an unwisely white sofa, so I’m slightly more reluctant to paint on that.) 😂

Sixfanarts: Lift

Doing something interesting here: I used opaque watercolour (namely, buff titanium) for the face, something that I’ve avoided like the plague for decades, ever since I decided that transparent was the way to go. Now I feel that there definitely are opaque colours that give you a beautiful soft and creamy look, particularly, interestingly, for light colours. I used to think that dark colours are better when opaque, but I’ve come to understand that they do clog really badly. I never conside...

Weeeelllll… let’s say I learned a lot. I've found that’s a better way of saying "I totally botched this".

Some things worked. I actually used gouache to glaze very carefully, and that worked nicely. The skin was a catastrophe from the start and no matter now many layers I added, it never stopped. The fabric and patterns are kind of cool. The paper in my sketchbook didn’t take the soft gouache layers for the skin too well, so maybe go for hot-pressed paper for gouache in general...

Evi in gouache! I'm actually surprised how well she turned out (the ugly stage was exceptionally ugly, and her nose looked terrible up until the last tweak). Luckily, in gouache, you can fix things like that!

I now made myself a little gouache kit from an old watercolour box, which is great to take along, and works surprisingly well when rewetted. Now I’ll dare to take it along to school too....
