Here's the finished cover image for Bryan Vanderhoof's Rosharan cookbook project! I had a lot of fun with Bridge Four (and a rare smiling Kaladin)!
Left to right: Hobber in front, then Skar and Drehy, Rock, Renarin, Teft, Kaladin, Moash, and Lopen in front again.
Here's the cover mock-up:
(Whenever I look at the thumbnail, I feel reminded of my old children's LPs, haha. I'd li...

Hi all! It's been a few weeks. I've been busy with family emergencies (a son stranded without money in Beijing will keep you up at night; he’s all right now) and with this commission for Bryan, for his Stormlight Archive-themed cookbook! Front we have Hober left and Lopen right; back from left to right: Skar and Drehy, Rock, Renarin, Teft, Kaladin, Moash. Next up are the colours and some interior illustration sketches for the recipes, yay.
Today's also the last chance to get your pre...

Earlier this year, I was approached by Donovan Pottery about a collaboration for their themed, wonderfully nerdy mugs. Now we bring you a collection of five mousy mugs, paired with custom dice sets! I'm totally in love with the ideas the team came up with. And I want them...

Just a quick note (because I was dealing with more personal $#
The learning curve here went like this:

Evi: I’m so good OMG
Taravangian: I used too small brushes and completely over-plastered. (That's the official term now.)
Nale: Big brushes. Bold strokes. Yay! Clothes? Boring.
Maya: Sometimes, learning gouache is to know when not to use gouac...

Weeeelllll… let’s say I learned a lot. I've found that’s a better way of saying "I totally botched this".
Some things worked. I actually used gouache to glaze very carefully, and that worked nicely. The skin was a catastrophe from the start and no matter now many layers I added, it never stopped. The fabric and patterns are kind of cool. The paper in my sketchbook didn’t take the soft gouache layers for the skin too well, so maybe go for hot-pressed paper for gouache in general...

Evi in gouache! I'm actually surprised how well she turned out (the ugly stage was exceptionally ugly, and her nose looked terrible up until the last tweak). Luckily, in gouache, you can fix things like that!

I now made myself a little gouache kit from an old watercolour box, which is great to take along, and works surprisingly well when rewetted. Now I’ll dare to take it along to school too....

Unite them!
Gloryspren streamed around Dalinar. Thousands of golden spheres, more spren than he’d ever seen in one place. They swirled around him in a column of golden light.

Watercolour on Canson Montval paper, just under A4 size.
Yes, it was definitely a great idea to not have painted in four years and then go for dozens of golden spheres after nothing but a quick Shallan warmup. ...

Shallan sketching. Watercolour on Bockingford paper, just under A4 size.
🥳🥳🥳
Four years and two months without this. And all because my daughter said "I want to try book-edge painting" and I said, I‘ll try a landscape, can't be that hard. Oh, I think I can work in traditional media again!
Today, I went through the Herculean task of sorting through my art materials, cartographing the paints I had, sorting out small tubes that had dried up, trying out my old waterco...
