I suppose I'm an influencer now, hee

I was sent this beautiful and fully customised handmade watercolour set by Katie from KwartsCreations to review. She asked me what sorts of colours I liked, and I told her to go bonkers with transparent earth tones, so she did!

I just had JUST the idea of what I'd do with them. I already felt the Prussian Blue was crying out for Maglor, and well, there's a lot of nice Maedhros hair tones there too... then today, while peeling potatoes, I had the perfect idea...

Yes, I think about the Silmarillion while peeling potatoes. My train of thought went from "Why are there potatoes in Middle-earth? Would Valinor qualify as the New World? Did the Noldor bring them back with them?" to some train of thought I can't quite pin down now, to the flight of the Noldor and the sorrow of Nerdanel, and then to how unfair it was that the Sons of Fëanor are never called the Sons of Nerdanel.

I then thought up a little dialogue at their parting - very probably not with Maedhros; he was too caught up with his father at that time in his life- but with Maglor.

What if he was the only one who really mustered the courage to tell her good-bye, and what if she told him, "You must go with him, for you are the sons of  Fëanor . But remind your brothers once in a while that they are also the Sons of Nerdanel, if they will listen."

OK, back to my potatoes...

It's not just OK, it's essential. ^^

Is it ok that I get so much joy from reading all of these comments? 😻

Jenny, I can tell you that Tolkien indeed considered making Americas Valinor. But sadly it was rather a late idea that’s rather incongruent with the legendariumas we know it. He came up with an idea that when Valinor was removed from the physical world, we it wasn’t removed physically. The actual land stayed behind and became Americas, but really became an ordinary land with all its special holiness gone.

It looks really cool, doesn't it? It even seems to granulate between ochre and blue!

Jenny Dolfen

Oh yes. Sons of Nerdanel. Please yes yes yes!

I don't know what that 'vivanite' stuff on the bottom row is but I WANT IT DESPERATELY.

I completely agree - isn't it even said that he was being very political about their names, or did I just think that for so long that it became total headcanon? Maglor in particular. Nerdanel: "Oh, what a beautiful voice he has!" - Fëanor: "He'll make a great commander!" - Nerdanel *glares*

About Nerdanel - I have no idea why Maedhros is considered to be "mommy's son" xD He acted and did like his father's son in mosy of cases, but for sure inherited her wisdom and her hair color. Maglor seems to be her son indeed, as well as Ambarussar. Also about names. My humble opinion is that Feanor gave the names to his sons from political point of view. Nelya- finwe, Kana-finwe and etc. Nerdanel could see their soul and feel them better and amilpesse gave better discriptions of who they were in reality from personality point of view. Same for Maitimo for instance (oh I can talk for AGES about him, stop me please).

Well, you see Mim is saying that those newcommers from the West [noldor] are too proud to dig the soil and sit in mud. We can assume that People of the West, like Hadorings, Beorings and Amlahings didnt know anything about potatoes since Turin has no idea what the things were that Mim took oit from the sack. Probably Doriathrim didnt eat them too. But Halethrim did - since they were much closer in friendship to dwarves. We can also assume that Laiquendi did eat them - since they were children of the forest.

Yollie

I think so, yes! Or at least something with an unfinished quality to it.

Jenny Dolfen

I remember that one, of course! It is very comforting.

Jenny Dolfen

Oh, great, thanks Yollie! Of course, Tolkien wouldn't have rested before he'd cleared up such a glaring anachronism. XD And potatoes do feel extremely unelven.

<3 Such a subtle aspect, and lovely idea for the painting! Maybe, just a sketch..

I'm writing something on Nerdanel right now and I came across a passage that said all the brothers except Curufin (of course) preferred their mother-names and that they were always remembered by those names afterwards. That comforts me and tells me that they finally embraced the legacy of their mother rather than their father. (I'm pretty sure it's in the Peoples of Middle-earth volume, but I don't have it to hand at the moment...)

I have answers to some of your questions. Potatoes were endemical to Middle Earth, to be more precise - Beleriand. Nolodor were not eating potatoes, while humans and moriquendi did. We can find this information about potatoes from Children Of Hurin. When Mim talks to Turin while being in the caves.

Yollie

Oh my, I'd love to see you painting this scene 😍
