"This Hither Shore"

Watercolour and white gouache on Canson Héritage cold-pressed paper, 30x23 cm

Paints used:
Naples Yellow, Raw Umber, Lavender (Mijello)
Ultramarine Blue (Sennelier)
Dragon's Blood (Maimeri)

The Naples Yellow and Lavender are both quite opaque, "chalky" colours whose combination results in this pastel look here.

With this piece there comes a bitter realisation: I can no longer paint detail in faces if they're this small. Not even with a magnifying glass. I just can't get in a sharp enough image anymore. I had had a faint hope that the holidays would improve my eyes - and we're had two wonderfully relaxing days, with eating out and having fun at the park, sleeping in, watching the X-Files and breakfast on the terrace - but the blind spot is worse than ever.

I'm at a loss of what that'll mean for my art. Of course I can always go larger and less detailed, but that isn't what makes me happy. With this one, I fixed the face in Photoshop (and it's sort of okay on the original, after I'd gone in three times with white gouache and coloured pencil for greater control, and then just forced myself to leave it at some point); I could enlarge the face in the lineart stage and then do less detail with paint; but it's a bit of a blow. :/

I've just ordered a x10 magnifying glass... let's see what that does. :)

This picture is gorgeous! I’m so sorry to hear about your eye. I love your art so much, and I am very sad to hear about the inability to paint details. The way you paint people is what has always drawn me to your art. If you stop painting, I would view it as a great loss.

This is such a beautiful painting Jenny! I am so sorry your eye issues are not seeming to get better. I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers and I am so very glad I can support you in some way.

Lovely work! It's even lovelier, knowing the challenges you had to produce it. I know whatever happens, you will adapt and find new ways to produce beauty -- it's part of who you are! <3

This piece is like a dream indeed, so beautiful and delicate. Now, I'm so sorry about your eye getting worse. But I'm sure you'll find help and there will be a way things get better for you. Hugs and kisses. We've got your back here and always will.

I guess that's my way of dealing with stuff - telling people I trust. Hope I'm not boring you all. ;) I hope I'll find a way around all this somehow,
